i don't think you can even find out if a game has a redeeming value like i mentioned earlier untill it's been released, GTA III in the list was mentioned for it's ability to let people run riot and it's effect on later games. so this big law being passed can't account for the cultural value untill it either becomes apart of our culture or doesn't etheir way it's tricky

Pong.

Of course it has no damning social, political or cultural value either so...
i suppose i meant to pre-requisite with a also an 18+ rating lol, if a game can induce gore and horror and all that, without any of those i think

Honestly? Postal 2. Ironically, it's a PC exclusive, meaning it'll easily jump through any law due to the magic of digital distribution and/or piracy.
Yeah, that's really the only one that comes to my mind.
Of course, that's the only game that really makes up the backbone of california's argument in the Supreme Court case.

Hell, even Doom, the first "evil" game has value.

Shouldn't that be in the eyes of the beholder?

Does Harry Potter live up to those demands?

i think one thing that people forget is that most of the games mentioned to have some value..
like plumbers don't wear ties, the reason being that it has an impact because now we don't have to put up with games like it, it impacted the industry, which ergo, impacts the politics and culture of gaming
the only game I can think of that has no impact on anything is Super Mario Bros. for the Wii
for the simple reason, that there is none, I'm quoting Yahtzee here, but the game has no purpose being made, i was on the original mario for the NES earlier today, and i had more fun with it than i had with the wii version
the game has no reason to exist.

of course not! if something was created to elicit any type of emotion or thought or reaction, it must have something value, and i honestly think it is actually IMPOSSIBLE to do this.

Even if a game posesses no social/political/cultural value then there is always the fourth option (that being scientific value) which is exhibited by every game out there more or less (video games have been behind the advancement of a lot of technology, especially in the field of computing and communication).

On top of that, all games have economic value. Imagine if games were to be banned right now and their sale prohibited, imagine the huge hit to our economies that would follow (this is the same reason that smoking is merely 'discouraged' rather than outright banned, it's just worth too much money).

maybe this law is pretty stupid, because, its all based on opinions really. one mans trash another mans treasure and all that.

after reading a particular article on wired.com, which stated a game could only be banned if it had no redeeming social, political or cultural value, i couldn't think of one wondering what everyone though or even if they could think of any and put a good justification on it.

Forget games, I don't think it's possible for anything to have no redeeming social, political, or cultural value. The day the supreme court upheld the obscenity law that allowed for that was a dark day for the first amendment. You might make that call for, say, snuff films, but then those are already illegal on the basis that, you know, you have to kill someone to make one.

Both of the Dead Rising games. Everything the game does well has already been done by movies, and there's too much retarded running around and side-quests and escort missions. Any possible anti-consumerist or pro-individuality message is lost in the idiocy of running around looking for baseball bats and crap. Also the story doesn't do anything to reveal any kind of message. As far as social value... I don't really think it has any of that either. It's just stupid, and the timer/save system is so damn annoying.
Can't say much for DR1, as I haven't played it. DR2, however, seemed to make a statement on the cost of health care (Zombrex) and the ethics behind business and pharmaceuticals in general. May of the psychopath battles looked at people who took things "too far", be it a desire for fame or a personal perfect record.

Was it as clear or well-presented as it could have been? No, but there is some messaging there, and it has the player make some choices as to how they would actually act in certain scenarios. Not much is stopping you from just letting Katy turn and waiting out the whole ordeal in the safehouse, and it touches on some character development, even if a lot of it is overdone or cliche.

So while it may not be the easiest thing to spot in some games, may have at least some value, or explore different aspects of humanity in different ways.

Postal 2, from what I've read, is pretty bad but there can still be some value to it. As I understand it, your character is subjected to the worst humanity can throw at him on a day to day basis, and going "postal" and murdering everyone you don't like is the idea of "what if, one day, you just snapped?". Could it be done in a better, more mature way? Probably.

The point is that it's really hard to say a game has absolutely no value. Even early games such as Tetris and Pac-Man required some basic problem-solving skills, and that was the era when video games were games and nothing more.

Just because you can't find value doesn't mean it's not there.

But you shouldn't have to stretch to far to find it.

Surprised no-one has said ET, the game is supposedly the worst game in existence and seeing as most of the copies now reside at the bottom of landfills, they can't even be recycled into anything useful

Leopard Men.

Not only is it a shitty game with no redeeming social value, it's also completely broken because the developers who made it forgot to include a crouch button, which makes the game unbeatable.
is it a cousin of Cheetahman?
