For me it's Corpse Party. I can't even look at let's plays of the game because it freaks me out way too much.
Hmmm, not really. I don't think the industry is willing to push the envelope far enough.
To be honest I'm a pretty hardcore horror fan though, to shock me or get a rise out of me generally takes quite a bit. I've had to move from more mainstream horror to stuff written by guys like Edward Lee (I've bought and read more of his books than I should admit to), and to be honest his stuff is mostly just gross to me now at the worst, rather than paticularly frightening or creepy.
The problem with horror is that by it's nature it elicits a negative reaction in people which not everyone can enjoy (usually they are enjoyed retroactively when done right). Hence the focus on jump scares, or so called "cereberal" horror because anything capable of actually freaking a person out is going to come under fire from those who just don't get it, and those that DO get it, well the more jaded you get in searching for the next big thing that can illicit a reaction or has a wierd concept, the stronger the reaction from a mainstream audience is going to be if something like that was ever produced. Hence why I'm gradually turnig towards less mainstream authors like Lee, or those from the Bizzaro genere, etc...
There are some "horror" games that are quite good, but to be honest I think the industry has long since stopped being willint to push the envelope to the point of being able to create a horror game for serious fans.
As far as "Corpse Party" goes, it's an interesting concept, but sort of held back by the style it was done in (the bit in the infirmiry at the end of Chapter 1 took a bunch of tries just because the controls were so bad). The story/concept is interesting, and I suppose it's scarier/creepier if your not familiar with J-horror cliques.
Oddly, the best horror game series in terms of compromise and implementation is probably "Fatal Frame" which is also very Japanese/J-Horror in theme, followed by Silent Hill. I think those two probably came the closest to achieving what I would consider a real horror game.
