Is there a horror game you refuse to play again because it freaked you out to no end?

For me it's Corpse Party. I can't even look at let's plays of the game because it freaks me out way too much.

Hmmm, not really. I don't think the industry is willing to push the envelope far enough.

To be honest I'm a pretty hardcore horror fan though, to shock me or get a rise out of me generally takes quite a bit. I've had to move from more mainstream horror to stuff written by guys like Edward Lee (I've bought and read more of his books than I should admit to), and to be honest his stuff is mostly just gross to me now at the worst, rather than paticularly frightening or creepy.

The problem with horror is that by it's nature it elicits a negative reaction in people which not everyone can enjoy (usually they are enjoyed retroactively when done right). Hence the focus on jump scares, or so called "cereberal" horror because anything capable of actually freaking a person out is going to come under fire from those who just don't get it, and those that DO get it, well the more jaded you get in searching for the next big thing that can illicit a reaction or has a wierd concept, the stronger the reaction from a mainstream audience is going to be if something like that was ever produced. Hence why I'm gradually turnig towards less mainstream authors like Lee, or those from the Bizzaro genere, etc...

There are some "horror" games that are quite good, but to be honest I think the industry has long since stopped being willint to push the envelope to the point of being able to create a horror game for serious fans.

As far as "Corpse Party" goes, it's an interesting concept, but sort of held back by the style it was done in (the bit in the infirmiry at the end of Chapter 1 took a bunch of tries just because the controls were so bad). The story/concept is interesting, and I suppose it's scarier/creepier if your not familiar with J-horror cliques.

Oddly, the best horror game series in terms of compromise and implementation is probably "Fatal Frame" which is also very Japanese/J-Horror in theme, followed by Silent Hill. I think those two probably came the closest to achieving what I would consider a real horror game.

Penumbra...

I bought the trilogy when Steam had it on sale, and it didn't take long for me to go into NOPE mode.

Needless to say, I stayed far away from Amnesia, and intend to avoid A Machine for Pigs. I'm freaked out by just THE NAME of the later...

Hmmm...... No, not really now that I think about it.

I know I can only play Amnesia once a year, but that's about it. I really wanna play Corpse Party, but at the moment my back log is preventing me from doing so.

Penumbra and Amnesia are too much for me, and while I wouldn't think it actually count as horror, the Butcher's line in the original Diablo still gives me chills.

I swore off the Jak and Daxter series when I was playing the second one (I think) and, being the young, naive individual I was and not owning the game nor the system it came on, I swam out too far and a GIANT ASS fish came out of NOWHERE and both ended my interest in that game and started my perpetual fear of giant ass animals in video games, especially where you can't do anything about it.

Except for Arkham City, where Batman totally PUNCHED out that shark. That was awesome.

Nope. I'm a huge fan of horror games however. Have completed all the Silent Hills, Fatal Frames, and all of Frictional's games. Oh and all the RE games but those aren't really scary at all. By far the scariest are the Fatal Frame games. The only games that have ever come close to producing an actual fear reaction in me. Not for the faint of heart. But as to OT no I have never encountered a game that scared me to that level.

Oddly enough, Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo. The game is in genral is pretty mellow and cartoony in comparison to the Sega Genesis version, as it is a little more grittier and tied closely to the movie.

What made me never want to play the SNES version ever again was that when you go into buildings, the pespective changes from a third-person overhead view to that of a first-person view and the buildings are either well lit and filled with Velociraptors and Dilophosaurusus or completely in the dark. I would get a game over because I was uncertain of what to do. When the game over screen appears, there's a giant picture of a menacing Raptor egging you to continue and I never did.

That Goosebumps game, I think it was "Escape from Horrorland" or something, that game terrified me to no end way back in the day. There was one part where you had to run through a maze, and werewolves or something would jump down from above to right it front of you and swipe at you, and they were videos of real people in costumes instead of animations. Six year old me was quite literally hiding in the corner across from the computer for like 5 minutes before I had the courage to get out of the maze.

Also terrifying to me at age 6 was Nightmare Ned, where they had one level where you're strapped into a gurney and dozens of doctors come out at you trying to steal your organs and at the end of the level you have to win them back from a mutated beaver in a game of chance. I'm pretty sure this game was made by Disney, which is surprising because this game is very messed up. I just watched a let's play of this the other day and it still creeps me out.

The only thing that's scared me since puberty is that hotel in Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, but then again I don't typically go for the scary games.

Amnesia, 1 hour 20 minutes in I quit and went and sat on a park bench and watched happy people play.

I am a horror wimp anyway, why on earth I thought I'd try Amnesia is beyond me.

Although the story pdf file that came with the game is actually pretty well written, sometimes I wish I could play the rest of the game to know what happens next D:

Maybe one day I'll complete it, during broad daylight surrounded by friends.

Every horror game ever made!. I'm a major wimp, I jump out of my skin just playing minecraft, I fear what state my housemates would find me in if I played an actual horror game.

I used to be like that with the Silent Hill series. Although I LOVE the original 3 titles I could not play them unless the conditions were right, like there were other people in the house and it was light outside!

Now I am able to embrace the horror, mostly because I've played them several times each and know what's coming. It doesn't stop them building that fear and tension inside of me though... perhaps I'm just better able to cope with it now!

Games I can't bring myself to go back to?

Penumbra
Amnesia
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Funnily enough, the squelching mummies in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation terrified me when I was a kid and I wouldn't go back to that game again for some many years after.

Amnesia: Dark Descent. Not because its too scary for me to play but because of a one time occurrence that scared the shit out of me. Whilst playing through one of the early levels i was immersed in the atmosphere of it all, dark, dank, scary. When, my friend sends me a message on skype, i was so deep into the game that the beeping notification noise made me jump out of my chair and break my keyboard.
Have not played it since...

No, I keep meaning to go back to Amnesia, it has a great atmosphere. I usually don't have much time for games, and I keep forgetting about it. Penumbra was great however. For anyone looking for horror games on PC, if you have Half-Life 1, I'd recommend the mods "Afraid of Monsters", "Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut", and Cry of Fear, which was just released a few weeks ago. I've been playing Cry of Fear tonight, and it's just amazing. They managed to merge Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and put it into Half-Life. It's also in first person, so it really feels like it draws you in more than any third person game I've played. Just so you know, it does require a Steam version of Half-Life 1 to play it. Call of Cthulhu was also really good, and tense, although it did have issues as it was a rushed port from the Xbox version.
