I would say Doom, Call of Duty (as a franchise) and Half Life 2 (counting the Orange Box) are the most ubiquitous ones...

Counter strike in one form or another has sold 50+million copies
and today I had someone ask what game they were playing when someone was showing a CS:Go dunky video, who loves FPS
So im going with no.

I strongly disagree. In 1990 gaming technology was entering the 16-bit era, the next few years would show a huge explosion in the development of 3D rendering and a lot of the hallmarks of modern gaming developed in this period of time.

At the very most I'd say it's comparable to the 1930s and 40s when colour was being introduced and feature-length animated films were being released. You can't say that The Secret of Monkey Island is comparable to silent black-and-white films.
