Is there any games this generation that you would considering being regarded as a classic?

I'm surprised with the amount of mentions Halo 3 is getting, I remember a time where these forums would repeatedly have threads talking about how terrible and unoriginal it was. Something I wholeheartedly disagreed with, I'm happy so many are giving it recognition.

Halo 3: Possibly the most fun I've ever had on a multiplayer game and likely the last game where I'll go over to someones house with a bunch of people and cram onto two small tvs to play it. I have very fond memories of playing this game, for me it was one of the first console shooters where I'd say it felt 'refined', everything felt perfectly in tune and balanced.

COD 4: kick started one of the biggest game franchises of all time and became a blue print for hundreds of games. Also had some truly classic levels that'll be remembered for a long time (All Ghillied Up)

Mass Effect series: Hugely popular sci-fi story driven game in an era where we had multiplayer modern warfare crammed down our throats at every oppotunity. Really I'd go as far as saying to many of us, myself included, this was pretty close to gamings star wars. Hell just look at the parrales between react to ME3's ending and the phatom menace.

Because it was a bit disappointing considering how Halo 2 was such a high benchmark to reach in the series. It's not terrible or anything but it's nothing special if you exclude the Multiplayer. I, and probably most, will fondly remember it for it's multiplayer. Although Halo 3 was the last Halo game multiplayer wise that didn't try to incorporate MMS elements, excluding Halo Wars.

Aside from CoD 4, TF2, Minecraft and Angry Birds there aren't any games that can be considered classics yet as far as I'm concerned. As no other games have shaped their genre or style in such a universal way. There are plenty that may be considered classics but we'll have to wait and see how the next gen games are built.

I think Paradox deserves a bit more love in this area: Crusader Kings II, and Mount & Blade are very worthy of mention.

Dawn of War series.

Starcraft II.

Far Cry III.

FTL: Faster Than Light.

Just Cause II.

Team Fortress II and Left 4 Dead.

Natural Selection II.

Portal series.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. & Metro 2033

Torchlight II - for blowing Diablo III out of the water for 1/3 the price

XCOM: Enemy Unknown for reviving a classic.

The Witcher II: Assassins of Kings - for securing CD Projekt Red's position as one of the best developers when it comes to how they treat their customers.

Elemental: Fallen Enchantress - for the same reason as The Witcher II.

Bioshock Series.

Special Mentions

Simcity (2013) - always online, AI traffic breaks cities
Diablo III - always oline, real money auctions
Aliens: Colonial Marines - passing a game off from developer to developer with false advertising
Tomb Raider (2013) - rape fiasco and incredibly high sales expectations
Dead Space III - same sales expectation and a real-money in-game currency system you can cheat
Mass Effect III - "It's not going to be an A, B, C ending"
The War Z - AKA: Infestation: Survivor Stories - Plagiarism.

Every one of these games had an incredible failure on the developers or producer's end and should all serve as a reminder of what NOT to do in some way or another.

Im honestly gonna go with payday 2, sure it doesnt have a great story but no game has ever made me feel that adrenaline high of pulling off a succesful heist with cops biting at your heels and barely getting away, or doing it perfectly with no alarms. The music its self is amazing as it keeps up with the pace of whats going on and as an assault wave is about to come in the music drops and goes crazy. Sure it has some glitches here and there but i love it none the less and ive met a lot of new people playing it.

left 4 dead is pretty much the same so no need to go into further detail.

dark souls, at first i hated it because i couldnt understand it, but then i started focusing and it became gradually easier and actually fun. that feeling you get when you kill a boss who has been destroying you is one of relief and satisfaction that makes you wanna jump out of your chair and shout "yes!"

battlefield bad company 2 for sheer multiplayer mayhem, great maps, by far the best fps of this series, it had a certain comedy to it with all the crazy shenanigans you could pull off, c4 on qauds anyone?

The War Z - AKA: Infestation: Survivor Stories - Plagiarism.
Plagiarism? No more than Brown Shooter #4583. It was notorious for being shit. Every comparison to the mod it was based on was in the mods favour, which had higher player counts, less bugs, lower price - even if you had to purchase Arma 2, and didn't charge real money for in-game items which you could then lose if you died. It was the game that called into question Valves' policy of selling just about anything on Steam.

These are the games I will personally remember most fondly:

Bioshock Infinite: Fantastic, high-octane gameplay with an incredibly intriguing story and setting

The Last of Us: Phenomenal marriage of gameplay and story, with some incredible characters

The Walking Dead: Clementine

Minecraft: Unleashed worlds of possibility and creativity

Xcom: Enemy Unknown: A game that is actually challenging but very rewarding

Civilization 5: "Just one more turn..."

Bastion: A title that was far, far better than I had anticipated. Great soundtrack

Infamous 1 & 2: No sandbox was more fun to roam around in. Some great characters and an excellent story

Vanquish: Crazy balls-to-the-walls action

Burnout Paradise: No racing game can match the ridiculous amount of fun tearing up Paradise City was

Fallout: New Vegas: Best Western RPG I've ever played

Honourable mentions to Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption, Limbo, Skyrim, Super Smash Bros, Uncharted 3 and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Definitely -
Super Mario Galaxy
Left 4 Dead 2
Geometry Wars

Those games will still be fun to play in 20 years time.

Maybe -
Team Fortress 2
Minecraft

Maybe, maybe -
Mass Effect 2 (but will probably date badly)
Wii Sports (probably too simple to be regarded a true classic)

Have not played the PS3 so can't comment on those games. Yet.

Saints Row and Saints Row 2
The first Saints Row is regarded by most to be a decent but unspectacular GTA clone. It wasn't until 2 that SR stepped out of GTAs shadow and began to forge it's own identity.I doubt that the first one will be considered a classic at any stage

OT:Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. It seems that Zelda games often become more popular when their generation is over.Wind Waker and Majoras Mask are both regarded as classics by many people now but were quite divisive in their time.I can see the same happening for TP and SS

For me it'd be Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It was terrifying and a huge success, everyone loved it. It'll be regarded as a classic in a few years or so. Can't believe it's been 3 years already since it was released.

The Souls games for their minimalistic approach to story, visceral gameplay, hardcore challenge and heavy emphasis on atmosphere. The Arkham games for being the best comic licensed games ever, that not only stayed true to the source material in every possible way but were excellent games in their own right as well. And finally Deus Ex Human Revolution for exploring themes about technology and society in such an in-depth manner not seen since MGS2. And being an excellent game with intriguing narrative as well.

A 'classic' game for me has to be authentic, have a clear focus, possess an element that deviates from the norm and bring something new to the table that pushes the medium forward. Kind of a reference point for other games to come. While I think there have been many great games this gen most of them will likely be forgotten when newer and better games arrive. So I think we'll only know for sure what this gens classics are in like....10 years from now. :p

They attempted to copy everything about DayZ and in turn tried to name it after another big zombie thing "World War Z".

They were forced to change their name and were denied the copyright. Yes, Steam released it but they paid the fee and Steam punished them for it by returning any requested refunds.

Well for me, I would definitely regard the following as classics:

Fallout: New Vegas
Demon's Souls and Dark Souls
Journey
Team Fortress 2
Portal 1 and 2
Disgaea 3 and 4
Bioshock
Bayonetta
Mass Effect trilogy
Halo 3
Angry Birds
Left 4 Dead series
Batman Arkham series (although I've only played Arkham City)
Xenoblade Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles

I feel a lot of these games have done something pretty big in gaming culture. Others I just personally really liked.

Call of Duty 4, Spec Ops: The Line, The Walking Dead, Halo 3, Saints Row 2, Mass Effect Trilogy, and if GTA V delivers the goods, then GTA V.

I can see LA Noire maybe being seen as a classic since you really dont find that gameplay anywhere else.
Thats a pretty comprehensive list.

I think I'll add Super Mario Galaxy, possibly it's sequel.
I'd think the Uncharteds may be regarded as such in the future, possibly The Last of Us, and maybe at a stretch Killzone 2/3 will be fondly remembered for excellent class based multiplayer and setting a visual benchmark for the PS3.

BioShock will almost certainly be considered a classic, I'm not sure about Infinite though, playing it again on higher difficulties exposes the flaws in it's design.

I would certainly think of Skyrim, Oblivion and Fallout 3 as classics.

And Bad Company 2 will always be a close personal favourite for it's multiplayer.
