This is why I've NEVER played multi-player on anything because I don't want to have to deal with that crap. The fact that I'm female shouldn't mean anything, but it does, and then you get assholes like that.

People say you shouldn't use a mic and you shouldn't let people know your a woman, but that's fucking stupid. I shouldn't have to hide my gender just so I can play a game.

I remember when I first got me PS3 now and again I would get on Playstation Home, just wander, checking it out and guys would literally FOLLOW me around this virtual world trying to flirt and saying rude shit...all because of a virtual avatar.

The internet is a good place for people to express their anger, and hate toward others without consequence. Most guys feel really inadequate around women, and this kind of trolling is purely based on that. They're taking every humiliation, every disappointment, every awkward interaction, and spewing that hate back at you. It's sad, and depressing.

What's worse is you've also got the other side of the coin, with the internet white knight. Those guys take all their hopes, and desires, and project them onto you making you the damsel they need to rescue. Best thing you can do is don't let it bother you. Realize that what they're saying comes from a place of vulnerability, and disappointment, and rise above.

Or. . .give it back to them if you like. Someone asks you if you've been fucked recently say "yeah. Your mom is an amazing lover too. she does things with that strap on you wouldn't believe. I do feel sorry for your dad thou, I think that carrot went a little too far up his a. . ." well you get the idea.

I'm confused. . .isn't refusing to play multiplayer games the same as not using a mic? You're hiding just the same. . .

Yes. We're bastards. Sorry about that.

This happens pretty much in every multiplayer game on xbox live. That's why there's a mute button.

This...

This is why bot-modes should ALWAYS be included alongside multiplayer.

Killzone/Counterstrike/Red-Orchestra have it right.
COD: Black Ops has a bot mode

My xbox live user name doesn't denote that I'm female, but I was playing a multiplayer on there about 18 months ago and some "genius" worked out from my voice that I did indeed have lady parts. I recieved that much verbal abuse over the next hour that it put me off multiplayer for a year. Only got back into it with Assassin's Creed and ME3.

However I now refuse to plug in my headset, so if anyones talking to me... sorry!

I think this is more indicative of CoD players than gamers on the whole as whilst not being female myself, there are two females who regularly game in the household and have never suffered anything comparable to the insults in that video. The closest one has come was a single idiot child in Halo who stupidly questioned if she was indeed a female, and then followed it up with, "Are you fat?". The comment was ignored and nothing more was said.

Steam is a lot better again, there's quite a few female members in my clan and friends list who regularly play together so something must be going right. Whilst I know an element of sexism exists with certain groups/people elsewhere, I think it's worth remembering that shittalking has been associated with gaming for a long time (not that I agree with it) and it's easy to confuse the two. So what would come out as an attack on a male's sexuality in one instance changes to sexist remarks once a gender difference has been established; their sex is not the cause of the abuse, but rather the type of insult. Context.

My tuppence worth for now.

Wow, the youtube comments suck, too:

1. Don't use a mic
2. Don't make your clan tag 'Lady'
problem solved?

Ok first no one respects people over xbox live so girls shut the fuck up and take it like a man.

If you took lady off your clan tag people wouldn't be harassing, so obviously your seeking attention.

Their hatred for women is palpable, I wonder how life is treating them?

To be honest though, that type of treatment isn't only reserved for women in CoD, there are people who will sit in a lobby with their mike on and if you so much as say a word they start screaming obscenities and insulting you. Its crazy, one of the reasons I put the game down.

That's how every online game will react to girls in general. Not just XBL. It's not gonna be easy to change though, I mean look how resistant some people were for that fighting game tournament controversy still sticking with victim blaming and defending the culture in a situation like that.

This is why I never enter a CoD room unless I'm in a party with friends or I've muted everyone in the room EXCEPT my friends. The odds of finding someone on CoD with something intelligent to say are about as likely as hitting the lottery jackpot every day for a complete month.

Beyond that, I don't play CoD anymore. :p

Trash talking happens, it's not gender specific. If you play multi in certain games, you are going to be called every insult under the sun, have your mother called every kind of expletive and have your sexuality questioned several times. It's how Xbox works. Depressingly.
But as for myself, It's never happened much due to personal reasons involving not talking over the mic. I've had a few comments but you just ignore it, throw insults back, be better than them, whatever takes your fancy. Don't take it so personally. Oh and in my experience, the worst I've gotten is "GET BACK IN THE KITCHEN" and a few lewd comments, other than that, weirdly supportive comments, random adds and invites.
Other than that, the majority of guys give zero damns about what you have in your knickers.
And when fanboys are irritated, the first thing they will grab is your gamertag as it's on screen and make up some kind of insult with it. If you have "girl", "chick" or "lady" there, they will pick that first, the same way a guy called "AtomicBeaver" will get comments like: "Oh? AtomicBeaver, more like Atomic*****!" or "Yeah, you'll never see a beaver, bro!".

TL; DR: If you can't handle 12 year old boys insinuating things about what you do with your privates while you play COD on LIVE, then I haven't really got much to say. It's not like COD has been known for its kindest and most level-headed fanbase online sometimes I mean, guys have to deal with being called a ton of things, ladies aren't special buttercups who are immune to it.
Plus for those assholes who won't leave it alone? Block/mute button is a beautiful invention.

Note: Of course no one should be judged in this way, but trash talking on LIVE is just a fact of life. It would be wonderful if it didn't happen, but no one here is a miracle worker. Things seem to be a little better than a few years ago at least. Still terrible and one of the reasons I don't play multi on some games.
