is it such a big deal that I happen to see my girlfriend's ill brother as a person? Or is my town just full of prats?
i'm going to go with the latter. you will realize one day that the majority of people are prats.

I hope I don't offend you but if you're right it sounds like you're in a down full of backwards thinking medieval douchebags who need to get a grip on reality. It ain't all pretty and people can't help be autistic. More power to you my friend for being a good boyfriend.

Regrettably, I understand you cause I grew up in a town like that: small number of population, where everyone knows everyone, and when someone is not from the place (my mom for instance is not from THE town) that is rubbed in ones face ALL THE TIME. It's like... we live in prehistory and we took someones cave dammit! I don't have the words, it just sucks big time!
Ignore them, seriously. At least that's how I got by while growing up, that made me stronger person, and ummm maybe a little paranoid cause I grew up with a general opinion that people are pretty much evil things.
Just be yourself, and do what you want to need to do, and blind yourself for the prejudice coming your way. And good luck, really really good luck.

Wanna talk small town? Thats where I live. Granted theres about 8 other just as small towns around it.

Bunch of redneck pricks where I live. My dads from Michigan and my mom from Tennessee. Needless to say my family is the outcast of the town.
Oh man... "The population was 413 at the 2000 census."

You're doing the right thing. Ignore the idiot townsfolk. It's THEIR fault they see the poor kid as "undesirable" in their eyes. It happens. If they can't accept it, they can shove their heads farther up their asses.

Probably missing some facts here, if not then they probably don't really understand his condition. Take him out with you to any outdoors activity, walk to the park or whatever, and show people that there's nothing wrong with associating with him. Also, you get +1000 points on your good person tab.

It's not you they're avoiding, it's the connection to her brother. People don't like being reminded of how fragile life is.

I know my parents friends son is mentaly retarded. (But it isn't terribly bad) and their is a kid on my street who is extreamly retarded. I see my parents friends son as a normal person, and I try my best to see my neighbor as a person (most the time it works, if he doesn't try to go into my house to steal my tissues.)

You're doing the right thing, and that's very admirable of you. My mother works with children who have autism and other developmental disorders in a public elementary school, and she instilled in me the belief that people with developmental disorders don't think in a way inferior to normal thought, they just see the world differently than the rest of us do. The way that town is behaving is pretty detestable.

I remember that back in elementary and middle school, there was a group of mentally and sometimes both mentally and physically disabled (I didn't know their exact problems) who the other kids avoided, including myself. It's not that we ever hated them, or even joked about them. It was just awkward to be around them due to our pity. I still feel uncomfortable around them, as I just hate even thinking about how unfortunate they are. Of course, I live in a rather small town, so my location might make me a bit biased.

That being said, your town is going very far with the avoidance; enough to be detestable, really. I'd say to stay with your girlfriend, because it's always nice to fly in the face of ignorance.

Stand proud, pal. You're a good man in a town full of douchebags. Do not bend, do not yield, do not back down. Remeber this: YOU ARE RIGHT!

Town full of prats IMO, don't let them get to you and take a feather in your cap for being a far more decent person
