A day later, I'm ignored all over town (well, that's the usual, but it was an eerie avoidance, nobody even looked at me). Now, is it such a big deal that I happen to see my girlfriend's ill brother as a person? Or is my town just full of ignorant cunts?
Fix'd.

I bet you can guess where I stand on the matter.

Although I'm curious as to how small your town must be to be aware of such a thing so soon.

Stand tall and proud that you actually treat people like human beings. I teach kids with Autism and even though sometimes what they do may seem socially unacceptable to some at times it never means you should treat them like your town seems to be.

Sounds like the rest of your town are pricks. You're just seeing her brother as what he is... Human. Just because he's autistic, doesn't mean he's any less of a person.

Short answer, the town is full of prats.

I can relate, a very good friend of mine has a mild case of some sort of mental condition but I don't care, I've always just seen him as the fellow spaghetti-loving, foosball dominating gifted musician he is. Back in primary school I stuck by him, I was often commended by teachers for it but at points my own friends who claimed they were his friend to abandoned me and him.

The town relies on social networking sites like FaceBook, and her mum had posted something like "so glad my daughter's boyfriend gets along with my baby boy" and I hope you can see where it goes from there.

It is an odd thing to try an understand. You have to actually live here to understand half of the crap that goes on. Almost every single person I know in town, and that Wiki stat is a lie, because many of those people have moved away since 2000. I'm not a very liked person around town, having fought the local rich boy in court numerous times, and causing a few corrupt but liked teachers to lose their jobs. It's a very confusing tale, but I don't have the time to explain the entire town. My questions really were is it a big deal, or does my town suck?
Hang on, hang on. You fought the local rich boy and people dislike you for it? Again, this makes no sense. Ordinary people love to see the rich taken down a peg or two.

If the (frankly insane) situation you're describing is true then yes, your town is full of twats. I suggest you move.

Well then, they sound like pricks. Ignore the one person who seems to be open to those who are handicapped? There must be something we're missing here. Did you happen to burn down any churches lately?
I'm an outspoken atheist in a very Catholic town, and my family is generally disliked because none of us were born and raised here.

Okay, by 'town' do you mean 'everyone probably knows you so no looking is weird' or 'Just passing randoms in the street and it is entirely possible that I am being paranoid'?

If it's the former, then you are unlucky enough to live in one of those towns that has only progressed beyond witch-burning due to federal laws.
Yeah, it's the first one. The population is around 10,000...oh lookie, here's a Wiki page on our little place! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holbrook,_Massachusetts
Sad thing is, I guessed you lived in America before you even said. Though, there are picks all over the world. Your town seems to have an alarmingly high concentration though.

You should move, and take your GF and her family with you. A town like that sounds like a terrible place to live.

Well then, the people of your town are an embarrassment to anyone with a brain and a sense of common decency. Fuck, this is the 21st Century, the town can't be so secluded that no one's visited in the past 300 years.

You, sir, must be living in Poncy McPonceville. Obviously the people you live with have no compassion or regard for the disabled. Be proud that you're the better man.

The ironic thing is that these people don't realise everyone is somewhat autistic on the scale of autism.

They're a bunch of insensitive uneducated pricks who aren't worth anyone's time or effort.

Don't bother even sparing a moment's thought over them. Just focus on better things, like the fact you get on really well with your girlfriend's family.

Your town sounds terrible! To label someone an undesirable in the first place is kind of disgusting, but to not associate with you for talking to him is plain ridiculous. It sounds like you live in a very small and very backwards town (no offence). Ignore them, keep talking to her brother if you want because he deserves a good friend, everyone else is ignoring him. It was good of you to talk to him. I know a few people with low levels of autism, barely anyone knows because they're so well socialised it doesn't matter. I'm not sure what your girlfriends brother is like but it doesn't help an autistic person if everyone treats them with such disgust. Man I'm sorry but your town sounds really horrible! It was good of you to talk to him :) Good luck with the situation.

Keep on being awesome man. The town is full of idiots clearly.

The mom however, never should've spoken to you about this!

What you did was a good deed and also helps restore my faith in humanity a bit. No, I don't see it as such a big deal. If the townspeople are going to ignore you for being nice to someone than I think you should just ignore the townspeople right back.

In my opinion I would happily do a good deed and be ignored for it.
