Both the xbox one and ps4 are hideously ugly, why do you think the developers made them look like that? they kind of look dated. Do you think the next gen is the ugliest consoles generation ever??

Meh, aesthetics are subjective. Consoles have never been pretty IMO.

Except the PSOne. [http://gamesc0n.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/sony_psone_-_perspective_hd.jpg]
That thing was so adorable, it could fit in my pocket.

Ugly? No more than any other generation.

The only consoles I would consider openly displaying in my living room next to the tv are the Atari 2600 and maybe the Dreamcast. I have neither. Everything else can go hide in the cupboard underneath with the uglies that are already there.

Honestly I couldn't care too much what it looked like unless it literally looked like a pile of shit. Either way I'm not focused on it while I play, or hell some people would have it in a cabinet while they play.

What we need is more colour, or wood-lining or something like that. I'm tired of having black or white boxes under my TV, I want something different. I remember seeing photoshops for PS4 colours that made the top part different colours and they looked so much more classy than the black we have now. What I don't want, is colour all over the box; colour all over the box makes it stand out way too much and makes it looks like a kids toy when colour on parts of the console makes it look like a sleek car.

Compleatly disagree, the black gives them a chance to match in with most lounge rooms, if you start going wood then its bound to clash with SOMEONES decore and your going to have wives and girlfriends bitching :p

That being said I have nothing against the primary coloured ones, a red PS4 might be nice, would stand out and match my red controller but the black is the safest

Even white was a risk because white stands out to much

I agree with the XBox One, looks like a throwback to the mid 90s, and the WiiU is so boring that they don't even like to show it in their ads. It's almost the same as the Wii, which was very unimaginative

However The PS4 has an understated modern design, I really like the slightly tilted cuboid, with that recessed line running round the middle. They put some effort into it.

The Sixth Generation was pretty ugly actually, we had the PS2 with it's weird serrated edges, Nintendo's odd Gamecube with handle on the back, and the Xbox which was large enough to see from space. The Dreamcast didn't look as bad, but it rolled over and died so early in generation it barely counts.

I think they've been looking better with every generation since I started buying them (N64/PS1 era). I like the look of the PS4, in all honesty. I'm also a fan of black, so clearly this upcoming generation was designed with me in mind.

Even if I wasn't a fan, the ugliest console generation this is not. I've seen pictures of the NES. It looks like an aeroplane baggage compartment.

I also don't think it was the developers who designed the look of the console, but there you go.

I'd have to agree with this. The word i would use to describe this generation's appearance is safe, not ugly.

Nope. I like ominous black boxes. Even the original PS2. Besides I prefer functionality over fashion.

The Xbone isn't as bad looking as the old Xbox 360 at launch, I remember having recently bought a state of the art (for the time) flat panel home cinema in black and having to stick an ugly white curved brick underneath it.

I'd have to agree with this, even though I can't really remember what the Xbox One looks like. I do quite like the look of the PS4 (a hell of a lot more than any Playstation I think), but really, does it even matter? What it looks like is the last thing I pay attention to in a console except for social features.

I think we really have to wait until we've actually got them in our homes, because it's surprising how different something looks in person and in your living space. Afterall these things weren't designed to be looked at on a white pedestal, they were designed to be looked at stacked underneath our TVs or whatever. I'm always shocked by just how cool the Vita looks in person compared to in photos/adverts.

And even saying that, I wasn't a fan of last generations designs. I didn't like the shiny black colour/material they used for the PS3's (except for the newest) and the PS3 was way too big and the curve felt a bit too ..fake?

And I'm not a fan of the 360, I know a lot of people love it, but the curves bother me for the same reason, it's hard to describe but the shinyness and roundness just bothers me in some way.

I disagree, especially with the PS4. In fact, a PS4 that has been photo-shopped white looks fantastic actually.

Now they just need to make one like that =P

I've got to say I agree with this. The console design has never been something I buy a console for, I don't even care that much. The reason is, I don't buy it too look at. I buy it to play games with. It's always behind my TV anyway, so I only see it when I'm replacing the disc.

EDIT:

when they make a red or green PS4, then I'll be excited for the looks. It'd be pretty badass.
