I actually agree that the Xbone and Wii U look like an old vcr and a car radio respectively. The PS4 actually looks really nice with its sexy edges and angles; if only it were white or red.
Ya if you honestly think this is the ugliest generation then you are very young. As some of the older stuff looked straight up disgusting. I mean for fuck sake the virtual boy? That thing is still gross just to look at let alone the eye strains it would cause you if you played it for more than 20 minutes.

The worst I can compare it to is if a Wii got obese, fell onto a saw and had some samaritan handyman slap some more LEDs across it.

The PS4's design reminds me of the PS2 and the brings back the nostalgic feeling. And if Gaikai is successful then I can play PS2 games.
You know what this console generation is missing? Wood grain sides. Definitely Wood grain.

I think they both look pretty sleek. Especially the PS4. Feels like a nice reference to the PS2's design.
And that matters to me.

Nope, I'm ok with black box bricks. I don't care much about the aesthetics of a console. Given a choice in colour, I'd always go for black. The fact that they looks like uninspired boxes does not bother me in the least. The PS4 will just end up sitting under my TV anyways and anyone who comes over will be more interested in how it performs than how it looks.
TBH at a far glance the PS4 and Xbone look the same. As far as boring black boxes go, I like them, because they don't attract attention. Most living room electronics are black since you're meant to be looking at the TV.

I actually think they're both pretty attractive units. The PS4 has a kind of understated artistry to it, it could sit next to your TV and not draw attention, but be pleasing enough to see when it does catch your eye. It's unique, but not particularly loud about it.
The Xbone is also great at not-drawing-attention. I cringe slightly every time (and it is a lot of times) someone pipes up about it looking like a VCR. Of course it looks like a VCR, it's a horizontally sitting black box. It just happens to be a particularly pleasant, modern and brilliantly minimalist black box.

You know, I think this is the first time the appearance of a console has supposedly been a big deal to anyone. I don't recall people talking about how the N64 or the Sega Genesis looked. They were for games.
Anyway, I don't particularly care for the Xbox 180's design. It looks very boring.

I agree. The PS4 looks kind of slick. I wasn't impressed at first, but the odd angles and all grew on me. I won't be using it as some sort of modern art exhibit and displaying it in the middle of the room, but who would? It's a game console. It has one job. To play games.
