Well, given the windows track record, I would wait until about 6 months after 7 comes out.

Nope.

If... IF Windows 7 is the long-awaited replacement for XP, it will still be the typical steaming pile of shit that every Windows is, at least until the first or second revision. When Windows 7 SP2 or the sorts comes out, and Windows 8 is being pushed on us, that is the time to change over. For now, stick to XP and be grateful you don't have Vista. Or if you have Vista, shoot your computer and bury it in the yard, then sprinkle 3.5" floppy discs over the grave to ward off it rising from the dead.
Haha no I dont have vista... Proudly running XP (the only way to go)

I've been running the Windows 7 beta on my spare PC. It is a noticeable improvement over Vista - it's less of a resource hog for one. It does however have issues with my RAID driver, such that it'll BSoD every once in a blue moon. Driver support is still lacking for some things, but that's to be expected. Other than that, it's not a bad OS.

Personally, I will continue to use XP64 on my gaming rig until it reaches its end-of-life or until the next version of DirectX is actually worth a damn.

To be honest, I haven't had the slightest problems with Vista. That said I don't use video or music editing software or anything like that but still, as someone going through uniersity and a gamer, vista's hasn't done anything wrong.

If you care that much about editing software.. buy a mac, otherwise vista's fine.

From what I've been told, a few of the nvidia drivers aren't so hot on vista.

From what I've heard, Windows 7 is likely to be much better than Vista. The development of Vista was plagued with problems, whereas with Windows 7 I believe they had a clearer idea of what they wanted to do and had a smoother path to making it happen. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, of course, so it might turn out to be flawed, or total garbage. But I would be optimistic if I were you.

I do have vista and i do not have a problem with it. The only reason why that works is that i modded vista to run more like xp and i got a powerful computer. People are right when they say vista can be crap and it wasnt decent till they added vista verson 2 (thats when i switched, and modded).

I actually really like my modded vista it works very well and i have the cool vista features plus dx10 for gaming.

So do not pick windows 7 up right away wait a little bit.

I have Vista - no problems thus far, and my new Nvidia graphics card seems to work fine...

Still, on topic, I'd say wait for a good 6/7 months after W7 comes out, so the powers that be have had some time to sort out the inevitable failings that plague the system.

I'm using Windows 7 since the open beta came out. The first open build (7000) only had some minor issues but the one i'm using now (7068) is more stable then Vista and XP but together, it's also faster then both. I have had no crashes, no compatibility issues or a single BSoD. As far as i can tell the beta is more stable then any other windows i have used. Also if you want to try it i think Microsoft is still giving out free beta keys though you probably have to download it somewhere else since they closed the downloads.

The moment my beta stops working and Windows 7 is released i will get it.

As usual, if you want to use a nonmicrosoft application or program, you have to wait until SP2.

7 is good stuff, stable and fast. I haven't encountered the problems with Vista others have complained of, though I didn't install it until SP1 was out and run a reasonably quick system. The biggest issue I have is that nVidia broke scaling for low-resolution games in their 180 driver and haven't fixed it, so I have to choose between proper scaling for Starcraft and better framerates for everything else. I can't really blame MS for that, though.

Why is everyone bitching about Vista?! I've had Vista since it was released, and I've had not one problem.

Until it's out no1 will know for sure. But the people who have the beta seem to think it's better.

If it's out then yea, get it instead of Vista. If you dont game, then just stick w/ XP.

It's not better than Vista. It's better than XP. That's a lot more.

Any self-respecting player will use XP over Vista. YES, EVEN WITH 3+ GB OF RAM. Just use a 64 bit version. You can mod your XP and throw a lot of shit on it, it will still run better than Vista. Ever.

Windows 7 is, right now, veeeery good. I tested it for 3-4 days (before I forgot about it - but I still have it) on a virtual machine. You know, slow, using only one core, no graphic cards? And it was awesome, can't wait to try some games on it.
