Well, my current avatar is that hand graffiti'd onto a wall in Half-life 2. I guess it looks like a guy's arm, but you can't be sure.
However, usually in games my avatar is a chick. Mainly because if it's in third person, I'd rather be seeing a chick from behind, than some dude. There are exceptions to this, like if I want to make some total bad-ass dude for a change.

Okay, that may have sounded sexist to some, but I assure you I treat both genders with mutual respect. Just to be clear.

My avatar is gender non-specific. I, however, am not. So I suppose my gender is not the same as my avatar's.

In which case, the reason I use it is because it amuses me.

Its hard for you to tell, isn't it.

Don't worry, they are male. When I get my new avatar though, it may get a bit difficult.

Prior to meeting my now-wife, female. Now: Male.

She (who is also a gamer and MMO fan) has said to me directly that she isn't 'bothered' or 'creeped out' when I played a female character, but I made the switch regardless on my own.

She plays exclusively female avatars.

Considering my avatar is an Obamicon of me wearing a Soviet military police parade hat (I love my Soviet military police parade hat) and welding goggles, I'd say yes. I did a couple of these, in the style of a James Bond/Evil Genius-esque, well, evil genius. This is the first one, "Megalomania", I also have one parodying those WWII-era recruitment posters that reads "Henchmen", I've got "Lasers", "Nukes", "Severance Packages" (me holding a knife)..... aaand that's about it I guess.
