Ours is, they're handling it with a spectacularly uniformed fashion.
1) All their footage of 'gaming systems' shows kids playing an xbox360.
2) they keep saying that ALL the systems are at risk.
3) and offer tips that won't have helped you in this situation anyway.

Now people are calling the police station asking stupid questions which are being directed to me... (I work in crimes against property/fraud)

Yup, same here, I realized this when my mom told me about it being on the news, I didn't actually see the news clip, but it felt kind of weird having some one tell me something I knew a day or two before-hand.

Yeah, GMTV apparently mentioned it and my mother tried to tell me this afternoon. I'd known for a little longer than her and it just felt... odd.

Nope. All I know is, PS3 owners might lose their credit card info, but XBL is fine =D
That pretty much finish's the debate on PSN vs XBL for me.

They surely are. My mother's hairdresser actually brought it up.

I've seen two local news items, one of which actually gave some good tips for PSN users to protect themselves.

InB4 jokes about that being last year's PS3 problem

OT: yes it has been on the news in the UK, my mam told me about it, even though I already knew from the internet.

As a matter of fact, they are covering it!
I'm living in Denmark, and both our primary news programs have covered it today.
I must say that they did quite a bit better than your (OP) local news.
They showed some relevant footage of Playstation gamers and they interviewed the main distributers for Playstation franchise and support in Scandinavia, and the Scandinavian Playstaion headquarters.
They also didn't make hasty unqualififed conclusions that would maybe be wrong.

I've seen a story on 3 stations so far (Aus).

2 were very uninformative and like 30 second stories.

The other was actually really good. It talked to a guy who had had $2000 put on their credit card recently, and the presenter of a decent gaming show, who actually knew what he was talking about.

Yes they are. This morning my mum was hysterical; she wanted me to delete my Steam account (which btw has about $500 of games) because the media had convinced her that "all gaming systems are vulnerable" >_>.

Not that I'm aware of, but I don't watch the news.

I'm really just commenting to say I love the name of this incident. The "ApocalyPS3". Clever.

Oh, see, that's because you don't live in America. America is like the internet. You can guarantee it's going to fuck up. I love it here, but christ we can be dumb.

Also, this. It's as good as "Playstation Notwork"

Haha. 'notwork.' nice

My mother called me today because she saw it on the news and wanted to know if the ps2 (which I gave to her so the grandkids could play games when they were at grandmas') would cause a similar problem because the way her (very very rural) news station reported it.

Best summation of how this country works, ever.

OT: I didn't think local stations would even pick up on this story, seemed like something more suited to the fear mongering 24/7 news networks. I still say we wouldn't have this problem if Cave Johnson were in charge of Sony.

UK morning show The Wright Stuff mentioned it, but it only lasted a minute and that the panel said it shouldnt have happened to such a large organisation and that millions of gamers are affected. That's it.

It was mentioned, not much more.

Smug comments like that aren't really appropriate when people are worried about their personal data being compromised.

I like what you did with the title.

OT: Yes, mainly they are using it as "Games are evil and will steal your identity"

Wasn't the ApocalPS3 that thing that happened last year around the Heavy Rain launch?

Mine isn't really covering it, they just had the decency to tell me something interesting for once instead of some bullshit about a deer walking into a restaurant or what Kate Middleton was wearing for the past week. They didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but it was still nice to see them talking about something useful to me for once.
