Not surprised. This isn't the first hack targetted at Macs and it sure won't be the last. The only reason Apple can even claim Macs are more secure is because most malicious program writers don't target it.

As far as the "lol it's on msnbc" comments go, realize that msnbc also reports on everything that goes to shit with Windows/Microsoft so this definitely ain't a bias issue. They have a dedicated tech section where they discuss security issues. The main writer there is pretty good, I'd suggest people read it.

Edit: Oh and the tech media ALWAYS reports exactly how these things are done. Thats just how it works. It puts pressure on companies to fix their shit. Not anything new either.

It was only a matter of time before some bored hacker got pissed at people calling macs unhackable and proved them wrong.

Why do Mac haters always jump at the opportunity to point out that Mac's aren't invincible? If someone tells you Macs are unhackable, they're likely a rabid, insecure fanboy. Mac users who are embarrassed by those fanboys know perfectly well why our computers don't get viruses. Frankly, I'd be just fine if Apple didn't gain market share as it would probably bring more harm than good.

I can't even say the word Mac on the Internet because everyone assumes I have a hard-on for Steve Jobs and iWhatevers because Apple has so many obnoxious followers. Just use whatever computer/OS you like and don't give a damn what other people think about it.

I hope your needless torrent of abuse gets you banned :)

I have a Mac, but it carys non important information on it and I only use it for recreation. Plus, I have an anti virus scanner that I run now and then on it anyway. So, ah well :)

Because it's "unhackability" and "virus-freeability" are major selling points from the Marketing Department. It's not unhackable nor is it virus-free, it's just that no one bothers.

Macs have become a hacker's dream machine with holding records for the fastest computers to hack. Now none of your personal info is secure and it can't be fix anytime soon as it's part of the Mac OS X kernel.

Bad times for MAC owner's, should have bought a PC.

My friend lost a Mac five years ago to a VIRUS. I haven't had respect for Mac security since.

Apple's website says the following:

http://www.apple.com/getamac/whymac/ said:
Designed with security in mind, Mac OS X isn?t plagued by constant attacks from PC viruses and malware. Likewise, it won?t slow you down with constant security alerts and sweeps. Every Mac is secure right out of the box, so you can safely go about your work ? or play ? without interruption.
http://www.apple.com/getamac/faq/ said:
Is a Mac safe from PC viruses?

Yes, a Mac is 100 percent safe from viruses designed to attack PCs. And although no computer connected to the Internet is completely immune to all viruses and spyware, the Mac is built on a solid UNIX foundation and designed with security in mind. The Mac web browser, Safari, alerts you whenever you?re downloading an application ? even if it?s disguised as a picture or movie file. And Apple continually makes free security updates available for Mac owners. You can even have them download automatically.
This doesn't claim Mac OS is unhackable or virus free. The fact that nobody bothers to hack Macs IS a selling point, and given that I've never had a virus or really heard about about them on Mac, I'd say that "virus-freeability" is a pretty fair claim.

yeah, g4s rock! :)

fact is they are reliable. mine is so busted and runs 24h a day, but rarely refuses to work. windows won´t let you do anything without asking "!WARNING!are you sure? this could make the next nuclear power device blow up!". if windows doesn´t know the format of a file, it gets so hyper-nervous it crashes. if a video file is somehow corrupted like you cant fast forward, your mac usually plays it minus the ff option, whereas windows would get a panic attack and just blow up.

So one of the main things people use to say that Mac's are better than PC's (I don't want to start a flame war here) is now vulnerable, and they're publicising it.
Clever?

clever people, no-matter their system, don't get viruses (or, not as many)

retards DO get viruses.

It's quite simple really, No system is safe. so don't download any old shit, click links blindly, and use a little common sense. and even on Windows 98, you'll have a virus free time.
