Why do people say drugs and alcohol or something along those lines when alcohol is also a drug? Cigarettes also gets somewhat of a similar treatment.

Because alcohol is legal, and "drugs" in that context really refers to "illegal drugs." Technically aspirin is a drug under the literal meaning of the word, which has lead to problems with crappily worded zero tolerance policies in schools; kids have literally been expelled for having headache medicine.

Well yeah it is...it's just...said xD. See, drugs are mostly referring to the illegal sort in that context, whereas alcohol is legal.
But yeah they're the same thing as a very base level. Alcohol is arguably more potent and more damaging that some drugs as well. Huh.

LOL ninja'd. Goddamnit.

From a chemistry standpoint pretty much anything you imbibe or take into your body that isnt food or water is a drug in some way. Hell if it interacts with your body chemistry or has a physiological effect its a drug. That technically includes foods and definately alcohol. Drug is a very blurred term in society, we tend to think of it as mind altering in some way but anything as simple as chewing some bark could be classified as taking drugs since that bark may affect your body chemistry to a degree. The classification tends to be "harmfull" drugs. And that depends on the dosage and combination with other chemicals.

When you get to the science of what is and isnt a drug and how we should define it its easy to see why we made it simpler in society and just called everything medical or recreational drugs and excluded everything else.

Pretty much this. Also depends on context though, a lot of my friends would see 'drugs' and alcohol as being different, and I would say that has more to do with the fact that they do drink, but don't do 'drugs', and therefore don't want to admit it's a drug.

perhaps because "drugs" conjure up medical imaages of pills and syringes..while alchohol is still a "drink" so it doesnt quite feel the same calling it drug

similar to coffee (or in my case energy drinks)

Dude, chocolate is a drug. Caffeine is a drug.

If I remember correctly, drugs are just things that change your mental or physical state. Chocolate is actually a poison, you have to eat 14KG to die from it but still.

When people say drugs they are talking about the "fun" kind, weed for example.

What the other people in the thread have said.

Alcohol is a drug, and it's a fairly poor and dangerous one at that. This is an opinion I've acquired after spending another evening throwing up and experiencing a hang-over for the second time of my life (The first time I had a hang-over, I had to wake up early to catch a 6-hour train ride to Oslo. Then I found out they couldn't sell me food on the train. It was pretty horrible.)

Yup its a drug. Quite silly really, we are allowed to drink our selves to death and smoke our lungs to crap but we can't smoke a little bud every now and then without getting the cuffs slapped on you. Although I do smoke cigarettes and partake in the smoking of illegal cannibus but never drinking, its just not for me.

Yes, and in fact worse than a drug like Marijuana though I still woudn't want someone driving under the influence of that. Caffeine is also a drug and they let kids have as much as they want.

Alcohol doesn't make me depressed. I'm quite a happy drunk.
That's not what depressant means in this context. It's the opposite of a stimulant, and makes you slow down.

In which case I'm also more active, much more animated when drunk. Not when I'm utterly sloshed obviously, but still.

It inhibits your central nervous system. Opposed to Stimulants like Caffeine, or Cocaine, which perk you up and make you more aware, alcohol makes you dopey. I drink multiple times a week (yeah, I know), and I can still be more energised and raucous than I normally would be, but I also spill my drinks, lose the ability to form eloquent sentences, and my attention is very weak. Depressants aren't named so because they make you unhappy and dull. They're named so because of their effect on your nervous system.

Edit: effect, not affect.

That's probably the lowered inhibitions aspect. If alcohol helps you go jogging, on the other hand, you're weird / a space alien.

Yes, and one of the worst. I don't really see why it is even legal the way most governments today tend to try and stop every kind of druguse (cigarett prices are sky high). So harmfull to the body but when someone wants an alternative and pherhaps safer way to intoxicate oneself, you will get the cuffs if busted.

I think they are just too lazy or to afraid to take up the drug debate again and this time, with som real facts and not alot of propaganda and corrupted/ignorant politicians and reporters.

Well given that I'm very selfconscious and unconfident, and alcohol lowers inhibitions, it definitely WOULD help me go jogging.
The hard part is deciding to leave the house instead of having another drink and shout at people on the Internet.

Placebo effect, its the same as a sugar pill, if you think you act happy and more active when drunk then you tend to act out in that way. If you were given a drink that tasted like alcohol but had no alcohol in it, you would actually act more "animated" and sloshed. The only true effects of alcohol is slower reaction time, memory retention (aka black out), and death.
