Mine died about a month in. I had just bought Halo 3 and was left hanging before the mission Cortana! Total MINDMASHER!

I actually was able to:

See the ring!
Turn off the system(as far as I knew it was just overheated!)
Turn it on again.
Play for 3 hours non-stop
Turn it off.

The next time i turned it on i got the rings permanantly!

Sorry to kind of derail from the original post, but how often do ps3's fail in comparison to xbox360s? Everyone I know (3 xboxes) have had their xbox360's fail, while my ps3 has been waiting for a decent game for the past couple years.

Let's see, what did I do when my 360 red-ringed?

Well, the first time I just stared at the thing in dismay, then took it back to Game.

When the second one died (that took about 3/4 days), well, I actually can't remember what I did. It must have been so traumatic that I have since blanked it from my memory. I never named my 360's in the past, but I won't start now, just in case that can trigger it too...

Mine's still going strong after a bit more than a year, but sorry about your loss.
By the way, was the late console's full name by any chance "Bananahat Staircase"? And if not, cookie for anyone getting the reference...

My apologies for your dead friend, but you should consider yourself lucky that your X-Box lasted two years. I've had mine for less and have had to send it in for repair twice.

Sometimes I wish I had just gone with a PS3.

No, it was just Mr. Bananahat. I've never heard of this "Bananahat Staircase" you are talking about.

I slapped it really hard and then it worked again. It still does and it died sometime last year. I've done this twice now.

You obviously work in IT, I love caveman maintenence. I used to have a TV that would only work after a good slap.
