Today I watched the first six minutes of Portal 2, and let me tell you, I need this game now.
The wit of those first few minutes struck me. I was actually laughing out loud at the little robot eye and the situation he and the protagonist were stuck in. Didn't watch more than that since I now plan on buying this game full price. No spoilers, please.

Now I didn't make this thread as a Portal/2 appreciation thread (despite my previous emphasis on needing it :p), but rather I wanted to ask you all a question that struck me after those first 6 minutes.

When was the last time you saw the real opening of a game and was completely hooked?

I saw a trailer of Alan Wake and knew right then and there that I need the game day one, no exception.

And I watched the first ten or so minutes of a Doctor Who episode years ago and decided that I needed it in my life immediately.

Would have to be fallout 3. After seeing a friend go through the initial escape from the vault on his PS3 I went and grabbed it for the PC. Probably would have got it eventually anyway he just sped up my purchase.

The opening of Batman: Arkham Asylum when I downloaded the demo.

IT HAD THE VOICES FROM BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES AND THE JOKER LOOKED PERFECT AND OH MY GOD EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT.

Bioshock, I passed several bricks when I realised it wasn't a cutscene.

Eternal Darkness.

Resident Evil.

Metal Gear Solid.

Streets of Rage 2.

Captcha: Zero anesten. Sounds like an indigestion remedy.

Gettin some Mass Effect 2 love in here. Amazing intro - walking out of the stairwell and into space was sublime.

Dead Space 2 also had a cool intro, throwing you right into the action, it was really effective.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

I wasn't too sure about the game at first, but when I saw the intro I raced to the nearest game shop.

Gameplay samples that made me buy it...

Nothing, actually.

I buy games either by trailer or at random. Or if its from Valve, automatically.

It took you that long to realize you needed it? I knew I needed it the minute they announced it, Valve is about the only developer I can really trust to pump out a quality product that has a lot of hype around it.

All kidding aside, I would have to say the last couple of intros to really hook me into a game was Bioshock and Borderlands. I had a really good gut feeling Bioshock was going to be awesome anyway but Borderlands really came out of left field to me. I expected it to be your typical COD clone (just in a mad max style world) and everything about the game was just pretty amazing and I really dug the art style in it.

Kind of deviating a little bit, It's hard not to look at Rage and draw comparisons to Borderlands (Believe me I know they are not "that" similar and Rage was in dev before / at the same time as Borderlands) but I really don't find the ultra-realism as charming as the art direction Gearbox decided to take.

*Edit - I have to thank Casual Shinji for reminding me of Arkham Asylum, I was really skeptical of that game until I saw the intro.

Gears of War. When I finally gave in to my friends' pressure and rented it I was hooked from the first few minutes. THE GRAPHICS. They were AMAZING, at least at the time. After a few months I did got bored of the game, but the first few hours of playing it was one of the only times a game has left me actually speechless.

Also, Mass Effect. I'd known about it for around a year before release and it looked good so I bought it. I wasn't convinced until I first saw the Citadel though. After that reveal I was utterly hooked and it is still probably my favourite game of all time, with the possible exception of its sequel.

As good as Portal 2 looks, I'm gonna wait until I've finished my summer exams before buying it otherwise I'll probably end up failing my degree by spending all my time on it. The wait is going to be unbearable :(
