"Final Fantasy; Crystal Chronicles; The Crystal bearers" is my go to example for this. It was a VERY fun game...but it was missing so much...
It would have been SO nice to have the following:
-More powers than just "lift and throw" and the occasional power that enemies could use. The Hero has gravity powers, show some imagination! They could have given us stuff like a Charged burst that send enemies flying team rocket style. A pull-then-melee move (why can the hero only melee in cutscenes?!). Giant damaging gravity spheres. The ability to fire weak long range projectiles. Stuff like that. But noooo, it's pretty much lift and throw the whole way and while you CAN do some cool stuff with the way enemies interact with each other and your powers....It still feels too similar.
- A fast travel mechanic that didn't suck. The game is essentially a sandbox game. Your 3 options to get places (aside from walking) are:
*chocobos. But you can only get them in specific places. Plus, you cannot open chests while on them. And if you dismount to open the chest, the chocobo vanishes. >_<
*A train that goes between certain areas. Doesn't cover enough places. Some areas are FAR from any train station.
*A warp network you get later in the game. But you have to FIND the entry points in the world (often well hidden) in order to access the warp hub, and you can ONLY find and use them when the area is peaceful. which brings me to my next point.
- Make it so that you can CONTROL when areas go into "peaceful mode" and "monster fight mode". I realize they did that so it feel like the world IS in trouble, and so we could not grind the same fights for materials, but still...Sometimes I just want to explore an area in peace, or so some shopping, but then the monster portal opens up and now I need to either kill them all or wait 5-7 minutes for the portal to auto-close so I can get back to checking out the area! That and when I'm hunting for a rare material, I HATE having to wait in the same damn area for 5-7 minutes waiting for the monster that drops it to respawn! >_<
- Make the game feel consistent, and/or add in a "wanted" meter or something! I mean, the hero is a wanted man on the run (which is kinda stupid on the villain's part), and yet the local guards don't even try to hunt you down or arrest you. Hell, even if you start causing havoc and mayhem with your gravity powers, the worst they'll do is ram into you and make you lose money. And then they either walk away, or just keep ramming you. At least make things interesting if I'm making trouble, and force me to run away and hide for a short while, or give me a constant fight for my life/freedom or something!
- Make the set pieces ACTUALLY feel important. There are two chase scenes that kinda fall flat if you actually stop to fight the monsters in your way (which you NEED to do to earn more health), and there was this super tense prison break scene that.....had 2 fights. You don't even need to sneak. There are NO guards to catch you, until you enter a room full of mechs, and then you do a kinda-boss-fight, and it's over. >_> Lame.
And remember, despite all these problem, I still really enjoyed the game! Imagine if they got all those things RIGHT? IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME! ;_;
