I'm trying something new, just letting my thoughts wander. No editing, just putting down my thoughts as they come (edited, heh). Apologies on the length in advance. TL;DR, scroll down to the italics at the bottom.

To me, a connection to the internet is a portal into a new plane of existence; something that transcends the physical world.

There is so much to explore; some parts dangerous, and likely to cause you trouble; other areas good for a laugh; some places are home to a bunch of friendly locals, who make for good company (I'm looking at you, Escapists).

But I got to thinking about how the internet will be viewed and utilised in the future, and how the internet of the past will be talked about.

As it stands today, I always get a funny little mental image of the internet. It's somewhere between the wild west, the pirate infested seas, and a seedy part of town where you can get anything if you have the right money or connections.

I can just imagine children decades from now talking about the crazy old days of the internet, when anything could happen, and the Internet Police didn't exist yet.

The current state of the internet is mostly unregulated. The biggest leap in crime in recent years could only be Piracy. I don't have figures to back that up, but the fact that 160,000,000 (or was it billion?) songs were pirated last year sums up the situation fairly well.

Internet crime is, at present, a fairly common thing for any fun loving, bible hugging teenager and his/her parents. What's more, stealing has never felt so right. The act of pirating does not even feel like a criminal action. Digression aside, my observation is that the internet is quite the unpoliced wasteland at the moment, with only a few people getting caught and tried for their actions every year (though they are normally punished quite severely), while millions keep breaking the law.

However

A little food for thought; The internet censorship plan in Australia is being put into action, and China has extreme control over what is accessible to its citizens; pioneers for a future, regulated internet?

Up until this point I have never considered that the internet might not always be such a free and easy place. I have taken for granted what a wild and untamed place it is. Rightly so, of course. The sheer logistics of policing such a vast number of transactions and interactions is unfathomable at the moment. However, as censorship comes to affect me, an Australian, I'm forced to consider if one day there will be an internet where people are genuinely afraid of the punishment from committing piracy acts (as well as the many other online criminal activities that can be committed), and where real world consequences result from online actions, where there is a legitimate authority governing internet proceedings, and handing out fines left and right.

So, Do you think the internet will be very different in the future? How so?

Do you think we are anywhere close to the end of the internet's wild west, frontier age?

Does anyone else have funny little mental images of 'internet pirates' as real pirates on the untamed seas of the internet, plundering wealthy corporations and ransacking/raiding websites.

Thanks for your time, if you could put up with my random thoughts.

As an Anarchist, I'd say that the internet being free is one of the most important things about our culture.

How else would the world get to know what happened in Iran? The government there could easily have covered it up if the people didn't have access to internet.

The internet gives opportunities for people to make their fortune.

And thanks to piracy, people can enjoy the little things in life, like listening to a favorite song or watching a favorite movie, without having to pay for it.

If the internet stops being free, I'm going to become a revolutionist and join Furb in the Irish frontlines.

If I logged into the Escapist in 2055.... Then shoot me.

For I have no life, and it would be best to put me out of my misery.

Also, fuck laws against piracy. So Lars Ulrich wont afford his gold-plated shark-tank for another month, big deal.
I hate that ****. I always get mad when I watch St Anger and he's in the museum selling his paintings... he drops his wine glass and walks off, leaving some poor sod to clean it up.

Grrr...

Anyway... on topic...

We'll be arguing on whether or not full virtual reality gaming is just a gimmick by Nintendo.

Why yes, i do get such mental images quite often.

As for Internet policing - well. Gonverments could waste immense resources to stomp out any and all things they don't like in cyberspace... ooooor they could just accept the fact that Internet is nigh-impossible to regulate and pour said funds into things which actually matter.

I hope that no censorship does come in, the interenet is currently the biggest Anarchist community in the world if you look at it like that.

In 2055 though, I'll probably still be here. At something like 520,000,000 posts or something, lamenting my loss of a social life.

[
I think it's closer to 600,000 going by my estimates... But I wouldn't ever want a post count that high.

OK, lets change it to "you've just logged on to the escapist, for old times sake, to see whats the Escapist is like now"

NO! NO! NO! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!
*Ahem* ok seriously now.
Well possibly....the Government (whichever gov) will have to have some seriously beefed up Software (i think that's the right term) to and i quote you "of policing such a vast number of transactions and interactions"
Perhaps sometime in the far off future, hopefully, when all of us are too bored and or old to care anymore.
if that ever happened before the above statement. I would break all the internet laws, and when the thought police come to take me a will proudly scream "Come and take me alive you bastards! Long Live *insert internet rebel leader name here*" and make them fight for taking me down!

I wish to become a part of your faction. What can I bring to the ranks? Why ale of course.

OT: Internet police is probably the most plausible advancement. Except that isn't really an advancement..

I just hope you're able to download a coffee into your materialiser ©.

I'm in my free time serving the web on my portable holographic watch. As the war outside continues to rage, i see an old website i knew once : the escapist. I press the link and see that the site wasn't updated since the start of this war in 2020. I chuckle because i see that yathzee is actually still putting posts on the forums and answers himself all the time. I grab my guns,Put on my coat go outside and step in my car and join the battle. Because earth is on the brink of extinction and we humans are the only ones who can stop it.

So in 2055 I'll be 78. But if you need someone to feed baby food to and to make you feel better because you are in better condition than him, then I'm your man.

Anyway, the Escapist in 45 years:

Yahtzee still won't like anything and will refer to Dizzy, Psychonauts and Silent Hill 2 as the benchmarks of greatness.
Shamus will have 15 different features.
Every third thread will be about MW28 and every second post on those threads will be "what's the big deal with MW28? Geez!".

Maybe not spot on, but that's only because I haven't worked out exactly which MW they'll be on by then.
