So many games, especially RTS have been influenced by history, and alternative history. Which period makes the best game material though?

Well, I know some games based on a novel of mixed fact and fiction of Three Kingdoms China I love. Feudal Japan is also good for more varied things.

I would have to say that WW2 is a good point, unless it is over done like a thousand times...oh wait it is. I think that 'modern' era games are cool, like prototype, except for prototype, which i could not stand.

Definitely the wild west, I can't think of an actual period in history (Spare world war 2) that has been represented in videogames to a high standard (Gun, that's all that needs to be said) on more occasions than the wild west.

I think World War 2 will be a popular answer, and I agree with it. More than any other period in history, it has a definite conflict between "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys", but there was plenty of amorality on the Allied side if you want to show the grey areas in the war. There was a major war involving nearly everyone on Earth in some way, and there's piles of historical information. For video games, the weaponry in World War 2 was fast-firing but not completely devastating, allowing effective and fun game balance.

The only way to find a war with more influence on humanity would be a trip into the future, and the future is too uncertain for a serious video game treatment.

I have to admit the alternative history stuff around WW2 can get pretty interesting. Especially the first two C&C Red Alerts. But like you said, it's really been done to death now.

The biggest problem with WW (wait so Wild West and World War are abbreviated the same way? Ironic) is that to keep is authentic the guns have to be pretty sucky. It's the only issue I have with that awesome period.

I'll go with the Feudal Japan era, or Medieval Europe. But really I like more Mythological Fiction rather than true history (even though games rarely stay focus to the piece of history, but hey, since when does anything portray anything accurately?)

It all really depends on what type of game is being made. Certain periods of time and places work better for different genres and development styles.

Well for starters everyone else is using the same guns you are so what the hooha, secondly there is a gun in Gun that is a six chamber shotgun bigger than your torso which shoots cannonballs, how's your opinion now?

Romance of the 3 Kingdoms ftw! ^_^

Those games got so much play back in the day....

But my new favorite setting is the wild west, thanks to RDRed.

Basically anything that isnt overrun with innumerable numbers of games already. So, basically anything but World War II.

All the classic parts of history have been focused on too much, give me some less common fare, like the rise of the Holy Roman Empire, or when Tibet conquered China.

Agreed. Outside of WW2, anything can surprise you and be refreshingly new. But WW2 games are just the same plots over and over again.

Well, I specifically play Dynasty Warriors, but knowing of the various others, said it so. Id play RotK though if I could, but I am not a PC gamer. Sorry.

To haters: Dont bother hating on DW to me, since most of you probably are biased jerks and if not, I love DW cause they are fun for me.

Honestly I never played it, although I doubt such a gun actually ever existed.
