Well, I know some games based on a novel of mixed fact and fiction of Three Kingdoms China I love. Feudal Japan is also good for more varied things.
Romance of the 3 Kingdoms ftw! ^_^

Those games got so much play back in the day....

But my new favorite setting is the wild west, thanks to RDRed.
Well, I specifically play Dynasty Warriors, but knowing of the various others, said it so. Id play RotK though if I could, but I am not a PC gamer. Sorry.

To haters: Dont bother hating on DW to me, since most of you probably are biased jerks and if not, I love DW cause they are fun for me.
Heck, I thought a bunch of people dug DW. I mean, what's not to love about cutting a swath through a bunch of cannon fodder? Heck, I even like the Gundam ones.

And as for Rot3K, you know they have console ports, right? Me and my friends used to play part 2 or 3 (can't remember) on SNES all the time. It even has the familiar characters, like Lu Bu. ^_^

That reminds me, I bet some of the ninja action gifs from that game would make some awesome avs.

/starts combing the webernets.

Definitely the wild west, I can't think of an actual period in history (Spare world war 2) that has been represented in videogames to a high standard (Gun, that's all that needs to be said) on more occasions than the wild west.
The biggest problem with WW (wait so Wild West and World War are abbreviated the same way? Ironic) is that to keep is authentic the guns have to be pretty sucky. It's the only issue I have with that awesome period.
Well for starters everyone else is using the same guns you are so what the hooha, secondly there is a gun in Gun that is a six chamber shotgun bigger than your torso which shoots cannonballs, how's your opinion now?
Honestly I never played it, although I doubt such a gun actually ever existed.
Probably not, but you only unlocked it by doing EVERYTHING in the game. Besides, I would rank Gun on my list of top ten videogames ever made, so it was fair.

Well, DW is surrounded by hypocracy from haters. I mean, gamers gripe DW is too much the same and yet are whiney cause Sonic is anything but and cheer it now that Sonic 4 is gonna be...Sonic 2 in 3D.
And as one gamestop employee put it as I picked up DW6E, DW is like Coldplay. Everyone says they hate it, and yet everyone loves them.

And uh, any say, Xbox/PS2 or later ports? I never owned a SNES .

I get where you're coming from, and I kinda agree.... except with that Coldplay thing.
/shudder

Here's something interesting, though; It appears that (according to Wiki) DW was a spinoff of the Rot3K series, along with Dynasty Tactics.

And here are some PS and PS2 Rot3K'ers for ya. ^_^

PlayStation

* Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI: Awakening of the Dragon

PlayStation 2

* Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms X
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI

the best you say.
easy answer there is no best it's subjective muahahaha!

ok obvious answer aside.
i think WW2 has been exploited way to much, simply because it wasn't that long ago.

in my opinion the best is medieval times.
because you can make monsters and such to your desire because people still believed in it.and it was such an simple time.
(as long as you ignore christianity and it's brutality)

I think World War 2 will be a popular answer, and I agree with it. More than any other period in history, it has a definite conflict between "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys", but there was plenty of amorality on the Allied side if you want to show the grey areas in the war. There was a major war involving nearly everyone on Earth in some way, and there's piles of historical information. For video games, the weaponry in World War 2 was fast-firing but not completely devastating, allowing effective and fun game balance.

The only way to find a war with more influence on humanity would be a trip into the future, and the future is too uncertain for a serious video game treatment.
Maybe the Mongol invasions. They had a much deep influence in humanity. Most of the Modern day map of Europe, Asia and half Africa is a consequence of that, as along the middle ages Franks, Goths, Normands, Huns, Hungaris, Alamanis, Turks, Bulgars, persians, arabians, Vandals, Lombards, Saxons and Russians were pressed from their original residence in western russia and central asia by the Horde. Same way India, Tibet, China, Korea, Thai an Kmer suffered pressure on the south and east.

I enjoy the 17th and 18th centuries for RTS games, such as in Cossacks.
Funny, because I think the biggest problem with Empire and Napoleon: Total War is that its setting is a time of line-up-and-die infantry tactics (never played Cossacks though). I'm not a big fan of the musketeer/line infantry style of military drill.

Ancient times are great for RTS, city-builders, and just about any other game genre you can name. Greek, Roman, Egyptian, I love 'em all. Although I'm waiting for the city builder set in ancient Ur. Start as a Neolithic hunter-gatherer, domesticate wild grains, and start the human race on the road to civilization. I don't believe it's ever been done before (the first level of SimCity Creator on the DS doesn't count.)

Cossacks is very different, there are a lot of close infantry units as well - perhaps more so, as well as cavalry.

The farther away the period is, the more BS gamedevelopers can get away with. No one's bothered when a Dark Age archer uses a bow that would be invented 300 years later, but have a WW1 soldier use an AK-47, and all hell breaks lose.

That said, my favorite periods are:
- Medieval Europe
- Roman or Greek times
- Feudal Japan
- Divided China (Not just the three kingdoms)
- 17th-18th century Carribean (Pirates)

Still though, for some refreshing ideas:
- Tribal Africa
- Russia during Ivan the Terrible
- Mongolia under Genghis Khan
- Communist Revolution China
- Scramble for Africa
- Aztec, Maya, Inca pre-Spain
- Colonial India
- Expansion of Islam

Empire doesn't lack for the units, it just quickly degenerates into an infantry-line shootout because a long line of infantry (especially as they gain experience and thus shoot more accurately and have higher morale) is the "best" way to play in terms of most bang for the upkeep buck. Every battle eventually turns into an 18th-century version of Cannae with me as Hannibal when I play that game. Lots of double-envelopments as the enemy flanks collapse.

everything can be good material, except pre-historic before the invention of tools.

Even that could be done as a cartoonishly over-the-top game about a kung-fu fighting caveman who uses his bare hands to fight big game animals. You get to beat up saber-tooth tigers and mammoths and bears!

The world is a darker place than it should be while this game doesn't exist.
