Wow, the "wait and you'll like it philosophy" actually worked on me... for olives specifically.

I used to not like them, but now I can actually eat an entire can of 'em.

I can understand liking things that used to taste bad (I never liked oatmeal, but now it's my breakfast staple), but what I want to know is why you would try to acquire a taste for it. Especially if it's bad for you. Beer, coffee, cigarettes -- as I understand it, for the most part they just create more problems than they solve (beer makes parties more fun, but makes parties without it less fun; coffee wakes you up, but now you feel tired when you don't drink it; cigarettes... need I say it?) If other things taste the same or better and you can have them for a lower opportunity cost (throwing in my economics here), why would you bother?
uh because beer rules

Well, after a while, I was able to acquire a taste for liquor, tuna, blue cheese(or however you spell it), and some other stuff I can't remember.

Well yeah, but beer doesn't taste bad... at least, there are people who like it immediately. But if you don't, why force yourself to repeatedly drink it? To be in the "in" crowd?

Coincidentally Olives are the first thing I actively tried to acquire a taste for. I, and one of my mates, sat down and ate a jar between the two of us (neither of us liked them at the time) for the express purpose of seeing if we could actually acquire a taste for them. It turned out the next day we both found ourself wanting to have olives and we have liked them ever since.

Thats an anecdote I realise but it does show that, for two people at least, acquiring a taste for food previously not liked is possible.

Mustard.

I started to get mustard on burgers and hot dogs despite the fact that I always hated mustard and after a short while it grew on me. Now whenever I don't have the yellowy goodness on my burger, it tastes incomplete.

As you age your tastebuds change. It's a fact of life.

Also you might not be so picky once you age and mature, and suddenly all of those foods that you refused to eat before are your new favorites.

Vegemite. Now there is an acquired taste. But once you get into it you will never be able to stop.

Olive oil and balsamic vinegar with bread is an acquired taste. The first time I hated it. Four more attempts at enjoying it later didn't fix it.

Tried it again at a friends house, to be polite. I loved it. Now it is my favourite appetizer.

I don't know why the brain does that...

I reckon with some things, you just get used to it from consuming it all the time. I started drinking coffee out of necessity - well, not really, since I had the option to actually sleep every night, I just didn't - and at first I couldn't drink it without excessive amounts of sugar. Now I don't have any sugar or milk in my coffee. I just got used to it. You never know - just because you hated something once, doesn't mean you won't like it later on. Maybe you don't do a complete 180 as you age, but there's still the chance it may taste different to you.

Well, I used to hate the taste of eggs...until I ate three ham and smoked mozarella omlettes. Talk about a joyride for the taste buds. Mmmm, can taste it now.

In some cases it's because your taste buds haven't developed enough to be able to enjoy the food's flavor. Liver, for example, or brussels sprouts.

Yes. I also hate eating some things I liked as a kid. It's just how some people are.
usually its the other way round......
what I mean is that as you grow older your tastebuds start to permenantly die out. I used to HATE all fish. now I love it.
It went both ways with me. I was saying yes in that first post as in, yes, I squired tastes I didn't originally have. But I also have a few things I loved to eat as a kid, that I can't stand now for some reason.

Well, not exactly food, but the first time I played Bioshock and Mass Effect, I thought they were the worst piece of shit games ever created. But Bioshock turned out to be one of my favorite games. And Mass Effect wasn't too bad, not amazing, but not bad. Mass Effect 2 I will always love however.

Also, I've had the opposite happen. I used to love cottage cheese, but now the mere thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. I don't even know why, I don't really hate the taste, I just hate the thought of it.

Fallout 3.

First Day I bought it, I was so close to trading it in to GameStop, but then I took a breather on it for almost a month, picked it up again and actually had fun blowing up Megaton.

There are a lot of thing which - the first time I tired them - I thought were awful (tomatoes, olives, salmakki, black bread) but because I kept being exposed to them my mouth just kinda went 'whatevs, just eat them' and while I certainly wont seek them out I have no problem in eating them now.

So I guess you can get used to stuff, or 'aquire a taste'. It's such a stupid phrase though.

The word is aCquire.

ACquire!!

But, no. If I don't like the taste of something, that's it. Period.

I hated Champagne back when I was a teen, now I love certain types of Champagne. I still can't stomach wine though.
