Yes I'm starting a best game of decade post but not really, I'm sure I'll see enough of these threads without making one myself, what I want to know is what games influenced gaming most and secondly what games do you wish had a bigger impact?

Phantasy Star online- It started the online thing for the consoles which is now used in almost all multiplayer games and making them a lot more fun. And next is Grand Theft Auto 3- Not a game I favor and while not being the first game to be open world it did make an open world that provided you with missions that gave you a clear goal that made it easier to jump into then Morrowind, plus it had far more companies trying to use it's formula.

As for what I wanted to make a bigger impact: Psychonauts- It had great writing and not just in it's humor it had a full cast of personalities that evolved throughout the story which you could choice to learn more about by finding them between missions to watch each character's own personal adventure or just ignore them and continue and with the game proper. Plus it was in a genre that doesn't really focus much on storyline. Also Shadow of the Colossus- well most games may have a good story they almost always have a bad script, by having almost all story elements given via monologue every few levels, Shadow of the Colossus told the story with imagery and if a want more detail I had to figure it out myself without Mr. Exposition also it made my best friend a silent horse that I deeply cared for over most game characters.

Anyway what are your opinion.
What games influenced gaming most over the past decade?
What games within the past ten years do you wish had a bigger impact?

A decade is considered X0 - X9 I'm pretty sure. ie the 70's

I'll play along anyways, my top 3 games from the last 10 years are...

Civ 4

Left 4 Dead

last one toss up between NWN and Dragon age.

My game of the decade is none other than:
Mass Effect 1.

I could list the multiple reasons why I nominate Mass Effect. But the key one being, it stands as my current favorite game of all time.
So of course it's my favorite one of the decade.

Most influential? WoW and Halo. Whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of individual opinion, but their impact on subsequent MMOs and FPSs is undeniable.

Games that I wish had been more influential? I wish Deus Ex had become the new standard for FPSs. Give me interesting and open level design over heavily scripted set piece linearity any day.

Top 5 of the decade for me are (in no particular order)...

1. Mass Effect- a good story, decent gameplay and sexy aliens... what could go wrong?
2. Pokemon HG/SS- I know, Im a nerd...
3. Left 4 Dead- fast paced, action packed and special infected just waiting to rape you...
4. Mirror's Edge- I'm one of the few that found that game worthy!
5. Halo: Combat Evolved- best of the series by far!

Bewts is correct, you're a year late :D

I'd have to go with mass effect for both, though.

Im going to Have to say
1) Dragon Age- Orgins: I know alot of people liked Mass Effect more, but i jst loved this game because i was actually able to relate to the charcters personaltity.
2) Assassian's Creed: Sure it was repetitive, but it was not only educational (if you actually read into the game) but it was nicely paced. And, once or twice, it seemed to be past the point of exelerating.
3) Oblivion: this is one of the first games i ever played, and it kept me on the console for hours on end, just because i wanted to know what was going to happen yet.

Game that i wished had a bigger impact
Mirror's Edge. I trully loved the look and concept of the game, but when it got to the more challenging parts of the game it was just to "unuser friendly" and the Player Charcter (Faith) Would sometime, for no reasone, jump off a building to her death.

+1

Most influential game of the decade is probably a shooter like Halo or CoD4 though, because, like 'em or not, you can't say that they aren't major trendsetters in gaming as a whole, for better or worse.

I'm pretty sure I answered this question a year ago, you know, at the actual end of the decade, but whatever. My game of LAST decade was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Second place goes to Jet Set Radio Future.

for those saying a decade ends with a "9" year, you are incorrect. you are in agreement with the majority, but the majority is incorrect. there was never a "zero year".

decades, centuries, and millenia all end, not begin, with multiples of 10.

1980 - 1989 = 10 years, a decade. In this context, 2000 - 2009 = a decade. Sure a decade can be the last ten years of any point in time, but in terms of the 'noughties' it was 2000 - 2009.

We name decades based on their tens column, but mathematically, a decade spans from xxx1-xxx0.

You're both right.

like i said, you hold with the majority viewpoint, so i can't argue too much, but it is technically incorrect. if the majority thinks that what is wrong is right, then who is to say otherwise? that's all i've got to say though, so feel free to respond if you need the last word. i've said my piece. not gonna keep derailing this thread for an unwinnable argument.

BEST GRAPHICS (for its era and console): Metroid Prime (specifically Echoes)
BEST STORY: The Mass Effect series so far
INNOVATION: Tempted to say Portal, if not for lack of anything else that springs to mind.
GAMEPLAY: ...I'll get back to you on that, because i actually don't know this one.

Top five games are:
Team Fortress 2
Katamari Damacy series
Fallout 3
Star Wars Battlefront series
Probably Dead Rising 2 when I get it.

Games I wish had more impact:

Tribes series. It's the series Halo rip-offed, minus the fun guns, vehicles, game modes, and jetpacks. The company is gone now.:(

Katamari Damacy while I'm at it. It's the most fun you'll have with a game.(To me).

Dunno at all. A decade is a very long time, and there have been a lot of games.

But I guess my most played would be:

1. Mass Effect 1/2
2. Halo
3. Left 4 Dead
4. Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary/Underworld
5. GUN/Stranglehold

That's about it really. But then there's late starters like Batman Arkham Asylum which I didn't have as much time to play as say Halo.

Suffice it to say that from that collection I probably come across as the worst breed of casual gamer. Huh.

Okay I'm a year off for the normal recap thing but just look at it as a way that it can be discussed in one thread instead of the dozens that happen normally for this things.
