Its doesnt look that hard to mix Kinect with harcore gaming

I just thought of an idea for a game, it doesnt matter if you like it or not, what matters is, WOULD IT WORK as an hardcore game?

The way I thought of mixing Kinect and harcore gaming has been already spoken, it would be a hybrid, meaning that you would play with a controller and Kinect at the same time. The thing is that it would make Kinect look like a gimmick. If instead of throwing a grenade with a button you just do the motion with your arm it is gimmicky and soon becomes annoying. You get tired and it just isnt fun, its like throwing rocks.

So I thought of a way to make Kinect part of the game, something that would be as fun as shooting and dodging enemies with the controller without feeling that it restricts you.

So. everyone knows about this video, right?

Kinect seems capable of undestanding the fingers and have accurate results.

Now, everyone remembers how to use "The Force Grip" in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game, right?

Notice that you use both analog sticks and you cannot move while performing this power.
From what I played I found that this particular power could be done better.

So now I will explain my idea (it isnt all that original but its a sulution) with the help of a some pictures.

WATCH THE IMAGE AND READ THE ACCORDING TEXT

1- So imagine this game where the main character has telekenesis (story isnt important, just the mechanics).

2- It is your typical FPS, with gunfights and stuff.

3- When the player HOLDS RB you go into "concentration mode". Kind of what the character in SW:TFU does when using the Force. So you cant move.

4- The character's left hand goes into screen and you levitate whatever you are pointing at. You can push, pull, you controll it.

5- The player will hold the controller with his RIGHT hand while HOLDING RB, using his left hand to control the objects.

6- While holding RB the player can use his thumb to control the right analog stick meaning that you can still control the camera.

7- The player can do a full 360º without that akward bending to the side thing, or pointing the hand to the edge of the screen.

8- Since the player is using his hand imagine the brutality of actually toying around with the enemy with your own hands.

9- Since Kinect can recognise fingers you could do special poses that would have some extra utilities, like making the object in control crush when making a fist.

10- Or even just having the possibility of doing whatever you want with the hand, even if it isnt usefull at all.

11- It wouldnt be very gimmicky if it had multiple sections where the use of telekinesis was needed, while still offering challenge and fun. Like trying to hit a helicopter with some debris.

12- And for the lolz, when too close to a enemy, having the ability of ***** slapping the enemy.

In the end it still looks like a gimmick, but the experience that you get wouldnt be the same if it was with a controller.
And it wasnt a dumbed down FPS, like those shooters on-rails "a la" Harry Potter, you know what I am talking about.

What do you think?

Absolutely awesome drawing. I lol-ed and was almost convinced. Unfortunately I'd rather just use a controller. 9 and 10, especially, sound to me like "Did you ever find yourself angry at the unresponsiveness of controls? Get ready for A Whole New Level of Frustration!"

Other than that, it'd make lazy ports of game to the PC impossible since the PC doesn't have an equivalent to Kinect yet. After playing ports where everything you see on screen is still showed as Xbox buttons though you use a keyboard... I'm not very optimistic about the industry.

I imagine the increase in response time compared to pressing a button would be a significant game breaker.

What happens if they only have one arm?
how do the use a controller then ?
With one hand and your chin.
If you are serous i am sorry but, I laughed my ass of with that reply. I didn't think that far ahead(thanks for making my morning).
There's a paralyzed guy who plays video games with just his face, so... yeah.

On the idea> motion controls just seem like too much work to me... but then im lazy :p.
I guess I could see this working though.

Kinect can still go and die in a hole, if i want to jump around a room i'll buy a Wii no matter how many "hardcore" games Kinect trys to sell.

The OPs idea is cool but Kinect is still kinda sucky

It still sounds gimmicky to be honest. Every solution I've heard so far has just sounded like attaching an over-complicated system onto one that works fine as it is.

Switching between controller and the kinect would probably get tedious with response times as others have said. You may have moved since the last time you used the kinect hand gestures and it would have to adjust in the middle of play.
Otherwise it would have to track you always during play and you would have to sit in a spot where the connect could see you and distinguish you from your chair of choice.

If you are a programmer and actually thinking about this (I haven't checked if libraries for the Kinect have been released for XNA) I would try doing movements like these during playing games pausing during "telekinesis" practice. If in thirty minutes your hands are cramping, maybe not a good idea.

Overall for most first person type games, I think you would need to orient the kinect to the side to get a reasonable set up. This would probably be easier than reading the depth of movements such as hurling a grenade or holding/shooting a gun.
