"Now I went down stair and my friends were listening to some music on MTV James...
[ Why make 4 different music stations if your still going to play the same music and still sensor it! ] ... and this was this horrible song on, something about "waving your hair back and forth."

"Now its labeled as hiphop yet its lyrics and beat is even more meaningless then usual, then I came to a life changing realization."

*Strokes beard all educated and such*

"Its not Hiphop, its...
*Stares directly at you and raises eyebrows*
...ITS HIPPOP!!!!"

"So escapist did I just invent a horrible genre or just gave it a name we all can despise but most importantly is this an accurate name for it,
LET THE ARGUMENTS BEGIN!!!

I remember using that term a decade ago. And I'm sure I wasn't the first. So no.

Fiction! Dude! Hi.

Personally, I consider hiphop to be anything that resembles rap, but with a sort of "pop" influence. Alot of Eminem's funnier songs fall under that catergory and his more serious songs fall under "rap".

Things like that, "I whip my hair back and forth", or anything by T-Pain, is most certainly not hiphop to me. It is part of a completely different genre that I like to call, "crap".

That's just my opinion though. :3

You've got to admit that it's endlessly quotable.

It's a rather common term in the lyrics of rappers that, to a smaller or larger degree, subscribe to the idea of "conscious hip-hop" (Or a variant of the idea) as put forth by people like KRS-One, Public Enemy, Immortal Technique, Looptroop Rockers, Jedi Mind Tricks and so forth.

So no it's not, by any stretch of the imagination, something you've invented. It's a phrase describing a tendency that have made real hip-hoppers angry and frustrated for a LOT of years.

Thanks for the tinfoil hat, I think it all makes sense now.

I have no idea if it's right, but I thought rap was a vocal style, rather than an actual genre, and that most songs that incorporate rap tend to just fall under the hiphop genre.

OT: I don't think there's any need to create a new genre called hippop. I'm sure the majority of what you would put there can safely fall into either hiphop or pop anyway, so adding hippop just adds confusion similar to the myriad of metal-ish genres that metalheads can never decide on what belongs where.

Perhaps, but then why do all these rappers refer to "rap music"? Generally I like to make clear in my mind my perceived difference between rap and hiphop, because it makes it easier for me to decide which to listen to/avoid and when.

Hip-pop is a pretty good way of describing what I just call "crap" though, I guess.

Only for the purpose of pointing out how rediculous it is.
She's 10. If she was singing about love or how she don't need no man it'd be even more ridiculous and creepy. Leave the ballads for after puberty.

OT: Neologisms abound, it's pretty common to take two genres and mash the words together instead of hyphenating.

Thanks a lot. I took a cab home last night. One of the drawbacks to taking a cab is always subjecting yourself to the most bottom of the barrel music out there. Once this song came on, I just started listening to my iPod.

Its just Pop. as in "Popular Music". It's not HipHop, it's not Rap. It's Pop.

Pulbic Enemy = HipHop
50Cent = Pop
Aesop Rock = HipHop
Soldier Boy = Pop

HipHop is a culture, not just a music genre. MCing, DJing, Graf, Breakdancing, and a host of other things.

Pop just latched onto it as a way to sell records. And to it's credit has been very successful.
