It's the little things in New Vegas that make it so epic.

Speaking as someone who's lived in Nevada for nearly a decade, I have to say I love the attention to detail that Obsidian put into the writing in the latest Fallout game. Never mind the bugs or the monster-spawning layout that makes you wish for Bethesda's leveled enemies system (the Deathclaws in Primm Pass and the Cazadors north of Goodsprings jump immediately to mind). There's some really clever stuff in here.

Like the town of Searchlight (Sen. Harry Reid's hometown) being a heavily irradiated glowing wasteland full of mindless feral ghouls who used to be part of the NCR army (there's a political statement in that but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is). Or the fact that Caesar's Legion pronounces their Latin properly in the Roman (rather than medieval Church Latin) style. Or even the fact that the little unincorporated communities around Primm and Las Vegas are, in the main, properly named (Goodsprings, Jean, Nelson, Sloan, etc.) Except for Novac, which is just a clever pun.

This in turn makes me think of just how much Fallout 2 made homage to Reno---New Reno looks better than this city I've less-than-affectionately dubbed "The Wasteland" since the economy went to hell a couple years back.

For Discussion: Any long-time Southern Nevadans want to point out other points of interest in FNV that have real-world equivalents remarkably like the game? Or people from other cities want to comment on how close games set in their towns have come to getting it right?

Now while i'm not from Southern Nevada, I do agree with you. The little attention to detial is quite astounding and it makes me giddy whenever I travel through a room that looks vaugely familiar...

We do need a Fallout: Charleston (are any games in South Carolina?). They could make pirate-themed ghouls with a Blackbeard-ish leader.

I'm politically-apathetic and pretty ignorant of everything Nevada, so I probably miss a good bit of the references. But this is a game with a ton of charisma.

...L4D2 takes place near Atlanta. ...That highway was full of cars, and they weren't moving.

I've said in other threads, to people complaining once more about "brown landscapes": yeah. That's what Nevada LOOKS LIKE. -:D

I was really creeped out when
You found out all the residents of nipton have been crucified by Caesers Legion.
That was very unexpected as before i thought Caesers Legion were a bunch brainwashed thugs.

I am nowhere near that area but I do know the feeling. I live in the Capital Wasteland. In fact, I was literally in walking distance of the Germantown Police Department IRL when I went for the midnight release of Fallout 3. Granted Obsidian didn't work on that one but, still!

Also, for the record: I have lived in Germantown and am working in Olney. I haven't seen any Super Mutants yet...or Deathclaws. I also had no idea scorpions were indigenous to the DC-Metro area. I guess stuff happens though, during the nuclear apocalypse.

I knew enough from all the design docs for Van Buren (and about the Black Isle/Obsidian guys' viewpoint on Fallout lore) to know that it wasn't just gonna be "yay NCR, boo bad guy Legion, rah rah". One of NV's nice elements is the ability to make actual choices.

yeah, same.
I walked in at night, there was fire everywhere and people being crucified on each side of the streets. Needless to say I was horrified :p

I live in a small town in the UK, so I would be ecstatic the day a game is based here :D Or even just a film or TV programme, that would be great...

I must say that is awesome! If I ever went there (or even DC or Las Vegas) in the future. I know I wouldn't be able to stop myself from thinking about Fallout in any way :)

I also live in a small town in the UK, we had part of the post apocalyptic series 'Survivors' set in a supermarket just down my street. I think it says a lot when our town gets desolate enough to film a post apocalyptic programme here!

Man i love this game!
I like how you can mod your weapons, how the sniper rifle has a better scope, better companion commands, a lot more quests, and how the games story line goes.
Just a awesome game.
Although i think they may have rushed it a little and didn't try to fix the bugs fallout 3 had.

I wasn't expecting to come across Lake Mead. Thought that was pretty epic. Especially swimming to the bottom and finding that special something for someone. Pretty awesome.
BTW
I love that quest
