Well... most of us weren't watching it when we were a wee lad, most of us were into the MANLY cartoons, with robots, army guys, and guns... lasers in it! The newest cartoon in the series (generation four if you are picky for details) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was designed by it's creator, Lauren Faust (of Powerpuff Girl fame) to appeal to both the kids watching and the parents watching it, and had real characters instead of the "copy and paste ponies" of the past. However, this article was written ( http://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commentary/the-end-of-the-creator-driven-era.html ) about how Lauren taking this job was the sign of the death of creative animation. The people of 4chan started to talk and attack this article, and watched the series in protest, but they found to their own horror that the series, with it's good writing, interesting characters, some humor/references only adults would get, and beautiful animation, was FANTASTIC
So from 4chan is spread, and spread, almost always by people asking, like you, what is with all the ponies. I even got into the series by making an entire thread asking, "what is with all the pony avatars?" People keep getting curios, give it a try, and LOVE IT.
