For those who are neck deep into anime and would like a show that doesn't take itself too seriously and contantly references classic/good anime: Hayate no Gotoku (AKA HAyate the Combet Butler). Currently has about 76 episodes and 271 Manga chapters (and they do a very good job of integrating the two while making them both good on their own).

Bleach is okay, even if it is maddeningly similar to DBZ in terms of the "a stronger guy appears" every freaking season. Memories of nobody was a good movie, although it probably would have been better as a half-season of filer (and they actually have a reason to not ever reference the events in the movie ever again in the main series).
that's half true, some one stronger dose appear yes, but you kinda know its coming, since it was telegraphed before hand with Aizen heading off, (the bount don't count, that's filler)so the Arrancar didn't surprise me when they showed up. but yes, the movies are pretty good, fade to black was better though.

the issue i have with Bleach, is actually this bizarre plot setup later in the manga (390s) where Aizen tells Ichgo that he set up all of Ichgo's fights, and i mean ALL of then, because he was interested in Ichgo since brith. which hit me as a big neon sign reading "the main character, and his friends AREN'T NEEDED AT ALL", ( this coupled with Aizens 'ego stroking' ) have kinda taken me out of it a bit. the current an up coming eps are good, an gonna be good, but good lord, plot's starting to need help

You should watch some Code Geass, I got the first season of it and thought "I'll watch a couple of episodes before I go out". I then cancelled all my plans for the rest of the day, sacked off my firends birthday party and just diligently watched it all, brilliant show on the whole.

Now searching high unt low for the R2 season.
R2 will blow your face off with awesome. Trust me.

I'd recommend Vampire Knight, but it's got vampires in it...VAMPIRES THAT DON'T SPARKLE!!!!

[sub]*sorry...was at B&N and they tried to sell me the Twilight graphic novel cause I was buying some VK manga for my trip*[/sub]

But on a serious note, VK is pretty damn good...Zero, while having his moments, isn't useless. Neither is the main character, Yuuki. I think you should look into it...at the least. And avoid the upcoming english dub...just...act like it doesn't exist! Also, it followed the manga the FIRST time around! Caps out right now at 26 episodes, but the manga is ongoing.

I'm a very sentimental guy. If a piece of music plays during a very emotional moment I'm quite susceptible to Pavlovian conditioning.

Those are a couple of examples, and the most varied ones. Most others of the sort just make me cry. Like <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHIyRBkQJEc&feature=related>For You (Music Box version) and <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSb-CpCqHio>She Was Weeping Sadly from Kana: Little Sister (holy crap, I still gotta get that review finished!), <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O7O5ale-Pc>Plain of Frozen Soil from Kanon, and <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbNWTUUusfw>Homesickness from Tsukihime.

...and a couple of <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1JgIg38QBU&playnext_from=TL&videos=dkdTdxNK1bc>non-VN <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_QP1GpkWW4&feature=related>songs.
I know what you mean.
That music just didn't make me feel that way.......well i haven't played the game, and a good piece of music at the right time can make you feel almost anything.
The first one "Lock On" did sound creepy, and it gave me a bad feeling, like something was going to happen.

Trust me, i know how music can effect people.

Fire Emblem.....oh man.
the song Reminiscence [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB_LPBHtisU] plays for Ninian a lot, and as you learn more about her the song begins to mean more, and now whenever i hear it i get a really Bittersweet feeling, her ending was really happy yet sad.

And i remember many of the Ocarina tunes from Ocarina of Time.
That game really moved me with not only the story but the Music as well.
I was immersed in the game. A lot of the time I was too sick with worry to feel angry.

If I ever wanted to embarrass myself royally, I'd post the (extremely stream-of-consciousness) notes I took while playing the game. Maybe I'll give that to Rodyle as a birthday gift.
Hahahaha!
That sounds "interesting".
I take it your emotions carried onto the page as well.

I want to start watching Hellsing, but don't know whether I should watch the original or the new OVA one which follows the manga more closely. What do you guys suggest?
If you have a group around to pan the crap out of it, Gonzo's 2001 Hellsing is a decent evening. If you want what the author intended, the OVA, for all their slow production, are much more satisfying.

Full Metal Alchemist had filler, granted it was interesting.
Even more bizarre, a good half of the first TV series AND the subsequent moere was all original story ("filler" by some definitions). That it was interesting and hard-hitting, touching on important issues like sin, sacrifice, child abandonment, medical torture, and experimental ethics was completely unexpected.

Other notes:

When talking about One Piece/Naruto/Bleach, note that these are shounen fighting shows intended for young boys. While there's nothing wrong with liking it (akin to adults enjoying kids' shows in the Western world), if you don't that's not a failing of the show so much as general incompatibility with the targeted demographic.

Talking about Bleach, you can tell it has long passed the point where Kubo wanted to really end it, and the sales reflect this. In ten weeks, it latest volume has failed to match even the first-week sales of Naruto's latest volume. This is in stark contrast to One Piece, which recently surpassed Dragonball Z as the best selling shounen manga of all time.

Talking about the past, be aware that you're missing a lot of the context required to judge what is good and bad. For every Akira, there's a Dog Soldier and you would do well to not forget that. In reality, you need fairly a poor grasp of history to say that new things are worse than old things in many ways (not to make light of the existential crisis that the intersection of the Moé craze and fully-digital animation imposes on animators).

I had a weird mixture of tears and anger when that guy turned his daughter into a Chimera just to pay some bills. (I don't even like anime that much and that show really surprised me sometimes, to bad the new show Brother is apperently bad)

NEVER watch anime based directly off of a manga. It will almost always be incredibly long, full of filler, and boring. There are a few exceptions, such as Trigun. If a manga and anime have the same plot, READ THE MANGA, if it is at all possible.

Some examples of good anime(In my opinon)
Trigun, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, RahXephon, The Big O, Cowboy Bebop, and Eureka 7.

....what? I like mecha anime. Got a problem with it?

It's probably easier to look at yourself in the mirror, realize you're not 14 years old anymore, and move on with your life.

Ehem/cast flame shield rank (69)

On the whole Naruto thing, I stopped watching and reading it just about 2 years ago and got back in to it 2 weeks ago and I must say the Manga has not dissapointed me thus far. The story really picked up and is a lot (I wanna say darker but it doesn't sound fitting) then before. Altough I must say Sasuke who keeps fkin not dieing is gettin on my nerves tho.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a pretty good anime. It follows the manga this time instead of making its own plot. I find it to be very good. Ergo Proxy is another anime that I also like, it is pretty interesting and I would suggest watching the first few episodes.

Death Note

Watch it and realise Japan can still come up with interesting, original and exciting series with great, relatable characters, the occasional goofyness, thought provoking oh and no filler.

Plus good dub too, which is nice
And ignore the fangirls and scene kids or you'll miss out on an amazing anime. As a lover of crime and serial killers I have to say the amount of thought that went into Deathnote's twists and turns is amazing.

Persona Trinity Soul was.. screwed up in it's own way but kept me in place. It has virtually nothing to do with any of the Persona games, so even someone unfamiliar with the series can watch it and still make sense of it.

Fullmetal Alchemist (the original series) still remains a favorite in my book despite its length, which is the main problem I have with anime. I do vouch on the Trigun as well. Outlaw Star's an older one but still stands as a pretty good one. Yu Yu Hakusho was one I grew up with that I can still watch, one of the few Shounen Jump shows that manage to maintain relative interest with the oddball chaacter set and not having an obsessive amount of filler episodes.

I seem to have the same problem you do and can definitely feel for the plight of feeling like anime has gone to shit. I'm tired of Twilight-esque school love stories (I'm looking at you, Vampire Knight) and the high school cutesy romance things. Yes, they're good for a laugh every now and again when I'm half-asleep and can't process serious thought, but where has all the good anime gone? Shounen Jump has especially gone to hell. I rarely watch anime anymore as it is, I far prefer reading so if you want manga suggestions I can give more of them.

I would recommend "Black Lagoon" and "Darker Than Black"(season 1 only.) There is also an anime coming out called "High School of the Dead." I've only read 20 something chapters of the manga for this one, but it's great so far. Its got a lot of seriousness mixed with a lot of fun poking at anime stereotypes (though the stereotype humor starts to get old after a while.)
