Well, since you got it for PC, here's my advice.

Play it once through as it is.
Then, MOD IT UP. If you want specific recommendations, just ask.
Or just browse through the top 100 on tesnexus. Beautiful site.

I wasn't really bothered by Oblivion's leveling system, although that may have something to do with the fact that I played as a mage and high-level mages are pretty much immortal in Oblivion.

If you're aiming to get the most enjoyment out of the game, then don't do too much research and don't plan ahead.

It is possible to mess up your leveling and become weaker as you level up (compared to your enemies), but in my experience this never made the game unplayable. It might become a little harder at the high levels (20-30), but not too hard that it stops being fun.

In my first play through the game, I did not do any planning or research into how I would make my character. I simply made it up as I went along. I concentrated on the skills I liked and didn't think about long term leveling. With this game, I really do believe ignorance is bliss. Most of the time it is tedious and time consuming to level up properly because it involves using or grinding skills which you may not like or need.

So if I can give you one piece of advice, it would be this: Do not plan ahead. Don't use guides or faqs. The best way to experience this game is to explore it and discover everything for yourself. If you spend your time worrying about your leveling, you will not enjoy the game as much. You can always fiddle around with the difficulty slider afterwards.

Once you hit lvl 10, google the location for Nocturnal's shrine, do the quest, recieve skeleton key, tell lockpicking to go fuck itself and spam auto-pick. Other than that, ignore the people that say you have to play morrowind and have at it, here's hoping you find the likeable qualities before the loathesome ones.

I could never get into Oblivion, i've played and beaten Fallout 3 and New Vegas but Oblivion just wasn't my thing. I just didn't find i to be so interesting and the combat wasn't all that immersive. I got stuck in a room filled with a bunch of little goblin things in some castle area that was under attack or something and gave up from there.

The first thing to do is to go BACK to steam and buy Morrowind, and play that instead.

As an introduction to the series I wouldn't recommend it, seeing as as much as I love it, it was a huge hassle to do anything in it and IMO Oblivion is a much better intro to the world and general skills. In Morrowind you have to get alot more involved with the world and devote time and effort to the experience and seeing as how he's getting Skyrim in about a month probably its better that he do Ob. first

As skills go, the secret recipe is 1 or 2 melee skills, marksman, a stealth skill, 1 armor skill, at least 2 magic skills. Works for me every time.
I usually get Blade; Marksman; Sneak; Heavy/Light armor (doesn't make much difference for me); and preferably a magic skill that buffs you and another one that decieves/deals damage to your enemies.

I do not recommend Alchemy/Speechcraft since you have to be very into that playing style. You can instead loot potions from the dead and chests and then sell/use them and you can simply bribe people (thou the mini-game of the Speech skill is fun).

In relation to your profession I would recommend sticking to the one given to you or create/find a profession that meets all the skills you plan on using. The race you choose will have an impact in what you will be good at so choose carefully.

Pro tip: Don't mess too much with the face costumization of your character, or else he will look like a retard.

Complete the first parts of the main quests to get some gear and loot Ayleid ruins to get gems which are a good way of making money fast. Watch out for Mudcrabs! (jk)

The dirty secret in late TES games is to AVOID the skills you will actually want to use. By avoid, I mean do not tag them as class skills, counting towards your advancement.

ALWAYS have a Misc skill that uses your main Attributes. Alchemy is a great Misc skill for Mages, since you can control how much you level it up very precisely. Armorer is great for Strength characters, for the same reason. Why that? To get a good Attribute multiplier whenever you decide to level up. Intelligence is specially crucial for Mages, so keep this in mind.

This is the only thing I'd say to anyone playing Oblivion in consoles. It may sound counter intuitive (and it is), but after playing a while, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

And, try goofball builds. Those are probably the one that will amuse you the most.

Finally, I agree with the opinion of some fellow posters: Play the game thoroughly once, and then think about modding (PC only, of course). Don't be afraid to restart the game. Since you can do whatever you want, the playability from the very beginning is quite high. Doing the main quest at around level 20 is much more interesting that killing Stunted Scamps at Kvatch, IMO =P

Enjoy!

Never ever choose Athletics, Alchemy, Mysticism or Security.

Always choose Armourer. Anything else is entirely up to you.

Even if you don't want mods yet, i'd strongly recommend the unofficial Oblivion patch, it fixes a whole lot of bugs (some minor, some not-so-minor) without changing the gameplay whatsoever

There are some absolutely fantastic mods for that game.

One I can't heap enough praise on is this one...

http://www.nehrim.de/infosEV.html

Once you've beaten the game and think it may be boring you slap that on. It lays an entirely new game ontop of Oblivion it's fantastic.

First of all, download this [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1891#]. If you're only ever going to use one mod, this is the one to pick. It simply removes the level scaling of monsters. It's such an obvious improvement that it's pretty much a mandatory mod because it lets you level up your character non-optimally without getting screwed by the lvl-scaling.
Ninja'd...

God, how I wish my PC could run Oblivion. The fun that could be had without level scaling...

OT: If it's anything like Morrowind (Which my PC can run! [sub]With some minor graphical issues...[/sub]) you'll want to download plenty of mods. The specifics don't really matter too much apart from the one Llil recommended, so go nuts! Download anything and everything that looks interesting, then delete them again if you don't like them. You've got a practically never-ending supply of custom content, and the game was pretty vast to begin with, so just dig in.

I'd recommend playing as a pure Mage. When you've levelled enough and with the right custom spells, you are almost invincible.

This reminds me that I need to reinstall Oblivion again after my previous modding attempt absolutely failed, probably something with the textures not working right...

Anyways, I've never found magic to have been of any particular use outside of the Vamp Night Eye ability, general recovery and enchanted weapons and armor. I either ran into the issue that most of the offensive spells weren't powerful enough or the ones that were I never had the Magicka to use frequently... or at the very least often enough to make a difference. So I eventually dropped magic partway and just hacked everything to death with a sword.

As far as mods go, be sure to pick up the Unofficial Patches and Supplementals. And if you want to go the mage path Mighty Magick would make it more worthwhile.

Once you start the game, its preety straight forward:

Download these mods, they'll greatly increase your experience

COmpanion Vilja
Tears of the Fiend
Quarl's Texture Pack
Eleswry Deserts of Anequina
The Unofficial Oblivion and Shivering Isles patch ( Only download SI patch if you have it)
Oblivion graphics extender ( makes your game look even BETTER than most games)
obscuro's oblivion Overhaul ( The download is really big, but it gets rid of that leveling problem nice and easy. Plus the game is a bit harder.)
The lost Spires ( A good quest mod. Adds a new guild)
deadly Reflex
Oblivion Mod manager ( makesm ods easier to find)

When I started, I choose the following ksills

Blade
Block
Heavy Armor
Marksman
Destruction
Sneak
Illusion

( If you don't have nay companions, then I would switch out Illusion for Restoration)

Well, yeah, but I can offer what I think are the "must-haves" or at least the "really-goods"...just my own personal opinion, of course...let's see...what all did I download?

Kvatch Rebuilt
Capes and Cloaks
CM Partners
Heart of the Dead
Hoarfroast Castle
Malevolent
Ruined Tail's Tale
Tears of the Fiend
The Lost Spires
Whispered Warning
WZ Inventory

Many of those I haven't gotten around to yet, but I will at some point...actually, with Skyrim coming out soon, maybe not...

Another piece of advice I forgot to include in my last post is that if you like the pretty landscape, you might not want to do the Kvatch quest in the main quest line until you have explored a lot and done a lot of side quests. Because I believe that once you go there (not certain exactly when it triggers), these butt ugly Oblivion gates pop up and ruin a lot of the landscape. Along with leveling, this is the other thing I wish I had never done in the game, at least not until i was bored with exploring.
