I've just had an encounter with LoL's infamous "players"

Today, I decided to try out Kennen, I wasn't entirely sure about him, after all, I absolutely suck as Akali and Shen, and I was convinced that the "ninja squadron" characters weren't for me.

Nonetheless, I thought It'd be fun to try him out(EDIT: I have played a few matches as him before, but I had departed from LoL for about a month, so I was slightly rusty, but I knew his mechanics quite well & YES I PICKED BOOTS straight away to counter zigg's poking), as I have a preference for all lightning-oriented characters in video-games, suffice to say, the match did not go well: I was up against ziggs, and my MS was painfully slow, I got poked a lot & died often during the mid game.

At around the 12:00 mark, Pantheon started projecting via chat, with the usual selection of CoD kiddie comments, when I called him out on it(I inquired if he's 12, I shouldn't have gotten myself involved, but anger took over), he barraged me with continuous insults, but it didn't affect me, due to the reason that I quite clearly had intelligence superiority(EDIT: I know I didn't, responding was stupid, but at the time of writing the post originally, I was still angry: I got such an impression as he was spouting racism etc. and I associate that with low intelligence)

I'm not hurt, (EDIT: for clarification purposes, I was pissed), I just wanted to know when was your first encounter with the douches of a gaming community(this was my first time), and how do you deal with it ingame, ie, what are your favourite comebacks(yes, I know, don't feed the troll, but we sometimes want to indulge in an attempt to beat the stupid out of cod kiddies(EDIT) through verbal comments, I had a reasonably crappy day and my fellow schoolmates are around the same level as Panth was: the pent up aggression burst in that match)

Not one to point out the painfully obvious but no, no you didn't.

The "are you 12" comment is quite possibly one the least intellectual and most pathetic attempts at an "insult" used by dwellers of the internet.

In fact, it's derogatory to insults to put that in the same category.

An intelligent way to go about it was to remain silent and giggle to yourself at illiterate attempts to put you down.

Or at least use witty put downs of your own.

Well, I used to play a horrible browser game called Runescape about five or six years ago, which was my first experience with online multiplayer. That game had a pretty obnoxious community. People weren't really that mean, just immature and generally stupid, always whining, asking really stupid questions instead of figuring things out themselves, begging other players for help or in-game items and so on. Maybe it's not that bad if you're patient, but my patience didn't last long.

Maybe that's why I try to avoid other players whenever I play MMOs these days.
As for comebacks, I never ever respond to those who act like idiots online. If I am being insulted by someone, then on the ignore list they go, period. I do get the itch to try and respond in some witty way, but I always suppress it. One prick calling people names isn't as bad as two idiots insulting each other.

I know, I was still raging, forgive me, but in the face of both xenophobia and homophobia, I assume instantly.
(LoL does that to me sometimes)

Also, I've had a reasonably crappy day, in addition, I go to a North London school, the population of which consists mainly of homophobes and (sometimes, but quite rarely) racists, the pent up aggression sometimes comes out in the face of persistent dick-headedness.

(Also, as it turns out, he actually was 12)

Honestly the best way to deal with online harassment of this type is to simply ignore it, or block/mute the player if that's possible. Allow the other player vent his/her frustrations, but do not respond as that tends to make the situation worse. I find people tend to shut up when they realize no one cares enough to respond to their bullshit.

However if such harassment makes you feel unsafe (like death threats) and/or is persistent (continues after the match/game has ended), you should probably report that player.

As for my first encounter with "that type" of player, I would probably say it occurred while playing vanilla WOW. Although I cant recall any particular instances off the top of my head.

I used to get it a lot more in WoW than I do now in LoL.

I never got tired of "I dont care if I ran into 3 packs of mobs before anyone was ready, it's the noob healers fault we died."

I never play ranked in LoL so the community is much more friendly when there's less pressure, but if someone is being an ass I usually counter troll with "You're all being far to nice, we don't play games for fun you know, I demand you all get much angrier right now!" seems to get a laugh and calm people down, or at least shut them up.

Anger does that.

Sometimes shit like that brings out the worst of us which is why some folk try to giggle at insults.

Don't let them bring you down to their level.

When getting enraged by that, just try the Brick Wall approach. It sometimes angers them even further if you don't respond to their hate - they can't "win" from a "brick wall" and if you give in to the rage they'll just continu.

I don't play LoL but I do play Starcraft 2 and sometimes people rage when we used cheap tactics. Flat out ignoring them makes them go into hyperchatrage but it's so much more satisfying.

This is how I dealt with LoL players, I guess that means you called me intelligent, thank you! :)

I know for sure I was smart enough to stop playing that game, all the players gave me a headache and frankly just made the game unfun for me. Now a days I stick to single player games, I play to escape from stupid people, not bathe in them.

Back when I played LoL I heard that kind of thing a lot in ranked matches. Apparently 1 death was feeding, and not going in as Ahri to fight 4 guys at once while youre at half life and nearly no mana was assisting them (I call it not feeding). Thats when I just said I wasnt playing ranked anymore and I stuck with that but it wasnt solely because of the abuse, it was because I just didnt find ranked fun.

Then I went to normal matches and while the problems were lessened they didnt go away either. Generally it was just afkers and people talking out their butts but it did make it really unfun.

So after awhile i started just doing intermidiate bots which gave enough challenge for me to be happy and remarkably the "infamous" players nearly disappeared. I found actual teamwork outside of set groups in ranked matches and I was happy with that

Although eventually the game just got old for me and I quit. I moved from f2p game to f2p game. Tried SMNC, tribes, Blacklight:retribution, Raiderz, and reently planetside 2 but Im sticking with blacklight for now

I don't remember my first encounter exactly but it was probably with LoL. Whenever they appear on LoL I just stay quiet and laugh to myself about it. Or I will counter them with niceness!

A bit off topic question here, but how are they anyways different from any other games 1337-posers?

I've played games from WoW to CoD:MW games, they're all the same from my experience.

=/

I just think those people are funny, I rarely get actually mad with them, they are just a little to absurd to take seriously.

Hell, if anything I think they make online games funnier.

Y'know, if I didn't play with you I would think you were joking about the niceness part. You are so anti-rage it's quite refreshing XD

OT: If you go with a friend into LoL you can generally make anything into a laugh. Me and my duo queue partner do quite well most of the time as it is. We both tend to play characters that can carry entire games by themseleves. His Akali, my Amumu. HECARIM when they ban Amumu. Awesome. We never go AD/Support bot together, God. If there's one way to ruin a friendship....

We never decided to win games by intentionally picking snowbally/hard CC people, he just plays far too much Akali and I love my Amumu. I literally just walk into 3 guys when i'm ganking, cry and tantrum at them and when they decide that this Amumu is a free kill, ult, walk out, free kills for my team. My last game with him went like 0/0/11 for half the match.

In solo queue I either mute them, ignore them or laugh at them. My mate is forever feeding the trolls, he feeds them so hard he starts making them rage and he's trolling them all of a sudden. He made our Holier Than Thou Cho'Gath ragequit when he was one who started it. He then rejoined 30 seconds later since this is Ranked and it's srs bsns. We won, don't worry. Amumu continues to carry hardcore :D

5 man premades are the way to go. So fun, especially since we've suddenly gone super srs with our Ranked team. We just need to work on our protection I guess. No point diving on their AD when ours gets demolished as well. Kieke needs people to meatshield for him! Maybe AP Malphite should work on that? Nocturne is too busy corkscrewing onto their carry kthx.

I might just be lucky, one of my team pointed out that I always miss my skillshots yet manage to get the kills anyway.

I'm so good I don't need to hit my Q, i'm giving them a fair chance by not using my speed buff to maximum effect.

I've decided that I prefer HECARIM to Nocturne now, Nocturne can't escape everything or CC their entire team and gib their carry at the same time. Something I can do with HECARIM. The terrify is so good now I know what i'm doing with it. I don't even push them towards their tower when i'm ganking now!

Oh I must get a Sonic Critboom with Homeguard HECARIM someday. His movespeed goes up to almost 1000 with his speed buff. He gets from fountain to mid tower in 3 seconds. I NEED to hit someone with my Devastating Charge while that effect is on.

HECARIM? More like HYPERRUN!

I have started employing a new tactic on LoL to deal with trolls and ragers. I recently started playing Planetside 2 and I really got into the banter than happens between the zergs so when I have someone raging I usually counter this with an in depth explanation of why they are pathetic rebel NC scum who are so weak they would have trouble fighting the spandex wearing Vanu sissies unlike a true Terran man.

This works wonders if they know what im talking about and if they don't then they just get confused and start spewing even more rage and bile.
It doesn't really shut them up but it does make the game a lot more entertaining.

Pah, your Terran rule shall come to an end soon: THE NC WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT! FOR FREEDOM!

I find it ironic that Planetside 2's faction-pride doesn't result in a person becoming a dick about it, I find it rather charming, whereas pride in LoL results in the player becoming a douche(most of the time)

you know the thing that upsets me about "those people" on LoL and other MOBAs by extension is the fact that they directly affect how the rest of the gaming community percieves the audience of that game, and, further, the game itself.

Call of duty suffers a similar problem (the same one halo used to before the audience I am talking about moved to CoD) and that is the screeching angry teenagers who have done various acts, with various degrees of consent with your mother, when you realise that it is usually only one or two people in maybe one in 10 games that actually does this, it becomes rather infuriating for someone who is a fan of those games to be taken seriously in discussions related to videogames, because your opinion tends to be cheapened, at least in the eyes of the people you talk with, by the fact that you are associated with an audience which is not the most prevelant in the game, simply the loudest, *really* freaking loudest

Don't get me started on Gears by the way, the multiplayer audience for that game is brilliant in the worst way, EVERY match sounds like a slangin' battle between the bloods and the crips.
(for the record I am exaggerating to prove a point, I haven't played as much Gears multiplayer, but that has been my most noticed trend with the audience)
