I've oficially given up on sniping in Call of Duty

I've always been awful at sniping. The closest I get is using the M1 Carbine with an aperture sight on WaW (which I do a lot). I just can't be dealing with goddamn scopes.

I've always had a sniping class in the Call of Duty games. I've never used it very much and I wasn't very good with it, but I used it enough to have a sniper class. But Black Ops. has shown me the light and I will no longer brother with sniper rifles. Do you out there still snipe? What's your secret?
My secret is quite obvious when you think about it. FAL with a reflex scope. Two to three hits equals a kill, 20 rounds per mag, 8/10 in all areas and semi-auto firing. Can't get better. Oh wait, you can stick a FLAMETHROWER ON IT!! MWHAHAHAHA! BURN CAMPERS BURN!

EDIT: By the way I'm exactly like you. Had a sniper class ready. But never bothered.

I still snipe. As I usually sit back and scan with the scope instead of running around quick-scoping, I haven't noticed any trouble at all. In fact, the first thing I did once I got the game was to see how bad they had 'broken' sniping and noticed no impediment to my play style. They even made it easier by bumping up the highest level of sensitivity. I continue to fuck people up with sniper rifles.

Never been a sniper, I suck at it. I tried a few times in COD4 and MW2, but always fell back on LMGs or assault rifles. Haven't tried it in Black OPs yet, mostly because I haven't really seen any really good sniper nests in any of the maps. And, as previously mentioned, I suck at it.

I use my sniper rifle with an acog, or use a suppressed dragonov on Hardcore game types.

Sniping is very sketchy on non-hardcore.
i dont do nearly as well as i do with ARs.
also the maps aren't very well designed for sniping. There are multiple paths and places to get to just about any advantageous location. Which is A VERY GOOD THING. However with the nerfs to the rifle, you almost need to play defensively and stay long range, the maps make it hard to do so.

(also, i think i've only been killed once or twice by sniper rifles, huge change from the other games)

I have a sniping class, mostly because it's kinda fun now, you're actually forced to use the weapons as they're supposed to be used. As for the secret, well. There's this ancient practice, it's called aiming!

Sniping in Black Ops is beyond broken. It's fine nerfing quick-scoping, as it was a complete pain in the ass, but they've just taken it too far. You can't use the things.
I have no problem sniping. Granted, it's not the main thing I do, I much prefer an assault rifle or SMG to a sniper rifle, but whenever I decide to whip out "Ol' Scopy" I have no problem setting up a little spot and shooting dudes in the face, and then periodically moving to another area.

I don't see why people keep complaining about snipers being "nerfed" in Black Ops. Quite frankly, they still work perfectly fine as long as you use them for what they were intended: long range shooting. Plus, I was getting my ass kicked by a guy using a WA2000 just about an hour ago, and I've seen several cases of players getting plenty of kills using snipers in several other matches.

Quite frankly, the sniper rifles work fine. You just need to stop trying to use them as short/mid-range weapons a la MW2.

I had a fun time reading that. But to point out one thing.
The main flaw with the sniper rifles in cod is the lack of bullet travel and gravity. Getting a kill at 500 meters isn't hard when your shots travel with the speed of light. Correct me if I'm wrong.
This really isn't an issue. At the ranges in which you might operate in CoD, your round might as well travel at the speed of light. Sure, it takes far longer for a bullet traveling at 3000+ feet per second means that the travel time is a mere 1/10th of a second at 100 yards. The difference in the point of aim when leading a target is a mere 3.5 feet assuming this armor clad weapon laden man can match the world speed record for a running human. But when you further consider that 100 yards is a very, very long shot for CoD you quickly realize that you have an even shorter period of time.

Introducing bullet travel time and modeling bullet drop and all of those other things that make shooting a small target at hundreds of yards difficult in real life certainly makes the task of sniping more difficult but it is difficulty implemented by arbitrarily following reality. Because you make it harder to introduce steel into flesh, would you compensate by making said introduction more lethal? The world in CoD is already unfriendly to the living and death in a firefight often occurs within a second of it starting. To make the world even more lethal means people would be even less likely to move unless their safety was assured.

The point is that, in order for introducing bullet drop and the rest to make any difference beyond pushing the sniper rifle further into obscurity is to increase the lethality of bullets that do hit. Doing this would simply result in an increased likelihood for players to simply wait in corners for people to walk by, something that I don't think the average CoD player really wants to encourage. As I said, there are happy middle grounds to this problem but the resulting game would bear little resemblance to CoD.

It is my basic view that the sniper rifle has no place in these games because of this.

I'm not playing Black Ops again till Treyarch fixes the multiplayer.
The game isn't fun for me when my red dot sight is glued on a person and I'm pulling the damn trigger like a hyperactive kid playing whack-a-mole and I get killed because the person I'm shooting at is some sort of gun-toting immortal. And when I'm watching the killcam I find that my enemy has selfishly pumped only three or five rounds into my player and practically kills me without barely giving a flaming kick-to-the-face worth of effort. Plus every game I enter I find it to be laggy as all hell. Just as bad is the matchmaking, but that's been a problem for Treyarch since World at War.
Apparently Treyarch is working on a patch for this but it's too late for them to make me love this game again but they can probably at least help me enjoy the damn thing.

I was a great sniper in MW2. In Black Ops, not so much. I haven't had much practice. The maps are inconvenient for snipers. The only map I snipe in is Jungle.

Sniper rifles are pretty weak too, I shot someone in the chest at fairly close range and the enemy just shrugged it off.

Why don't you snipe, exactly?

And yes, I do.
And I rock at it!

And my secret is just follow the pattern of an enemy, and settle your cross heir at their most likely placing in up to 10 seconds. Then I wait for their head to be there.

It isn't the fastest, but it saves bullets and makes me feel special :3
And far more realistic if you ask me.

I don't really snipe but I see tons of people doing just fine at it, don't see the big deal really.

You just can't expect to snipe guys standing out in the open, regardless of actual distance, you need to be stealthier to counter act the wind-up on the rifle
