I'm one of those happy ones who obtained and read The Catcher In The Rye, and enjoyed it immensely. For some reason I still clearly remember the part about the bourgeoisie suitcases. It is a shame that he didn't write more, but perhaps this one novel encapsulated everything he wished to say.

Rest in piss.
I mean pieces.

Catcher in the Rye was the only book I read from him, and I thought it was bullshit, but it's always bad to hear famous people die.
Noone hears about your death.

I hated Catcher in the Rye with a burning passion... So I can't exactly say I'm saddened. But eh, whatever.

Like it's somehow surprising that he died, because most people don't eventually?
While that is technically true (everyone does die so that fact in itself isn't a huge mystery, especially considering the man's age) but that doesn't mean you have to be an ass about it (it wouldn't hurt you to show a bit of respect).

I read 'Catcher in the Rye' and thought it was a great book so it is sad to hear that he died (just as it's sad to hear about it when anyone dies).

May he rest in peace.

[small]...they'll probably make Twilight a part of the High School curriculum in a few years; so when the author of a GOOD High School book dies, I'll find it upsetting...[/small]
It's already part of some University curriculums in Britain. The beginning of the end in my opinion.
http://theoatmeal.com/story/twilight I think you'll enjoy this

He never even did another TV or radio interview before he died (or write another book). Unfortunately, he wouldn't have likely ever done those things even if he had lived for another 50 years.
Now, if Stephen King dies anytime soon, publishing houses such as Plume and book stores across the nation may not survive long enough to mourn his loss!
If that happens then Twilight will win...

I honestly thought he was dead already, oh well. Also, 'Catcher' is horribly overrated and dull.
Will I get shot if I say I agree with this man?
Hopefully not. It would be sad to get shot for something like that. For the record, I liked the book quite a lot.

And I also though Salinger was already dead, so the news was quite surprising. Then again, 91 years is a long time to live, so I think a peaceful rest is in order. RIP J.D. Salinger

Pretty much this. I seem to remember hearing that he'd died years ago, so this came as a bit of a surprise.

I wasn't a particular fan of his books, but his importance and influence is clear to see, so respect to the guy for that.

*swiftly shoots you and the one you quoted*

No.. I can see why people say that. He is whiny and a bit of a dick, young Holden..

But I fucking loved the book when I was 16. I never identified so much with a literary figure. When we had to read it in English class 2 years later people joked about me and Holden being similar.. though I had moved on a bit since then.

I think it is a really good, timeless book (so far anyway) and it is more a shame that he never wrote more than that he's dead now. He was 91, it was to be expected.. I wonder how much we lossed by him never publishing anything again.

RIP dude, RIP..

*lights a candle*

Well, it's a pity the fellow died, but he was 91. I mean, "taken before his time" just doesn't seem like a very apt phrase to use.

Catcher was pretty good, but it was not the life-changing epiphany-causer some held it to be. Still, it's never nice to hear that someone's died.

Just because a death isn't a surprise, doesn't mean it's not sad.

I read Catcher in the Rye a few years ago when I was still attending my old school. I didn't like the book too much, but it's still a shame to see J.D. Salinger go.

I am sad for someone to die, but It doesn't need to be on the news or anything.

You really are a bastard. I suppose it won't be big shame when your mother finally dies from one of those STI's she picks up from being spit-roasted round the back of Little Chef's?
Awesome.
Haha, sorry but the response is just hilarious.

Absolute shame, I loved Catcher in the Rye. On a related note: I always though the author Salinger was a woman, don't know why. Maybe it's because of the protagonist of Catcher, who's got quite a few girly traits, but I always imagined a woman writing that book.

No, you are not supposed to give a shit, but if you don't you are also not supposed to post in this thread in an attempt to proudly display your newfound pubescent sense of cynicism, because we certainly don't give a shit about that.
Awesome.
