Just wondering what the people of the escapist think of J-rock in general. Love it? Hate it? If you do like it what are your favourite bands/artists? I'm a big fan of J-rock. Some of my favourite bands are Asian Kung-fu Generation, Base Ball Bear, Bump of Chicken, and Aqua Timez.

Particularly AKFG. They are one of my overall favourite bands.

And here's a video for you to enjoy.

I am not a fan. There isn't anything wrong with the people, the people are fine, I just can't stand Japanese. Something about the pitches and tones inherent to it, irritate me to no end.

I like what I've heard, which honestly isn't much.

Most notably, L'arc en Ciel's Ready Steady Go.

I love the video for it, because the guitarist is smoking like a chimney, and somehow, seeing that is refreshing in the west, where smoking is seen as a cardinal sin.

Thats not Rock, putting a J in front of it doesnt make it rock.

Rock as we know it died in 1979 everything since then is a pale imitation of something that came before.

Its alright as these things go but its no Sabbath

J-Rock in general...not really. That said, the Boom Boom Satellites are awesome.

It's definitely aged a bit, but the songs from the original Bubblegum Crisis series still define good j-rock to me.

It just about all sounds the same to me. -A bunch o' tween, anime-charicter-looking, nu-metal-wannabes with no musical talant, and funny accents.

Though I've heard a number of j-rock songs that I really liked, this is true for me in general. Japanese isn't exactly italian, it's hard to give it appealing rhythm and melody for me. But I think the same thing about german, while some people actually like german singing. Acquired taste.

The song in the embedded video is really cool, though.

Eh, it's alright. There's some good stuff, but it's not really my favorite kind of music. Much of it still sounds too much like pop to me, to the point where it does tend to get difficult to differentiate J-pop from J-rock (they're all sold together in one section in the record stores and played on the ONE radio station that plays them in any given area here, so when it's on in the background it all just kinda blends together anyway).

After having watched FLCL, I've come to be slightly enamoured with the pillows.

I will get around to adding a few of their songs.

Mikuru beeeeeaaaaaaamu.

I don't know what exactly qualifies J-Rock specifically, but the ONLY music I like that comes from Japan are these guys.

I hereby declare a mandate for everyone to love these guys...

Huh, those are some of the reasons I actually enjoy it.

I don't listen to a lot of Japanese music, but what I do listen to, I love.

Japan has some brilliant rock artists, but I dislike the sugary bland no-balls nonsense that most people think about when they think of J-Rock. Try these on for size:

Coincidentally I am a fan of German music, obvious example being Rammstein. I like the grind and inherent base in the language. Works for metal.

The fact that the lyrics sound more like an instrument because i have no damn clue what they're saying gives it potential, but "having potential" and "being good" are two totally different things.

So, i end up not liking most of it, and especially any of it that has the lyrics available on the youtube page, because it's one of those things that it's better to not know as they are all unanimously horrible at writing lyrics.

Love it. When I was a wee little teen some online friends introduced me to anime (via sailor moon fanfiction o_O) and J-rock via hide with spread beaver and older X-japan stuff. I have loved it ever since. I don't listen to it exclusively but there is a lot of J-rock that I love.

p.s.

Didn't know the Guitar Brothers. Their alright.

I knew of the other two. Don't really like Sigh but Guitar Wolf is pretty good.

The video doesn't even half capture how awesome they are. King Brothers are amazing. One of my bands played with them once and they sure blew my band right off the stage and then some, and we were by no means crap. Outside of maybe The Beastie Boys I've never seen another artist go off that much on a stage. I'm amazed they even lived through it.
