James Cameron Rips Into Piranha 3D

Piranha 3D may not be the greatest movie ever, but James Cameron thinks it's "an example of what we should not be doing in 3D."

Piranha 3D is just the latest in a long line of movies to be released in 3D this year, but it's the only one that James Cameron is willing to openly badmouth. Speaking to Vanity Fair in a recent interview, the man behind [http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-DVD-Combo/dp/B002VPE1B6/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1283201687&sr=1-1] decided to beat up on the recently-released campfest:

I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like [http://www.amazon.com/Friday-13th-Part-3-D-Deluxe/dp/B001K9OXEE/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1283201725&sr=1-1]. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip.

Cameron went on to say that Hollywood is in the midst of a "renaissance" right now thanks to 3D filmmaking. "[The] biggest and the best films are being made in 3D," he said. "Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3D. Disney's biggest film of the year - Tron: Legacy - is coming out in 3D. So it's a whole new ballgame."

Personally, I disagree with Cameron's logic: I don't think 3D filmmaking techniques make movies any more enjoyable than they are in regular two-dimensional formats. I also don't think that the technology is creating a renaissance of any kind, since movies like [http://www.amazon.com/Clash-Titans-Sam-Worthington/dp/B002ZG977Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1283201782&sr=1-1] and The Last Airbender were hastily converted to 3D and the results were far from works of art.

Cameron's criticism of the film may stem from some personal feelings, though. Back in 1981, the man was hired to direct <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piranha_II:_The_Spawning#Production>Pirahna II: The Spawning and was quickly fired by the film's producer.

Ultimately, I think Cameron is being absurdly harsh on Piranha 3D. Several of my friends were extras in the movie, which was filmed on Lake Havasu (near my college campus), so a group of us went and saw it on opening night and reveled in its goofiness. It clearly was meant to be a bloody and absurd send-up to the monster movies that were so popular after the success of Jaws. Did the 3D technique add anything to our experience? No, not really, but we still enjoyed ourselves.

3D: Avatar, YES
Piranha 3D, NO. Piranha 3D is a step backwards in 3D evolution.

Yeah I think he's right sorry...I saw the trailer for this and thought; Oh dear oh dear... So we're making movies like this again are we.

There are somethings that deserve and nay, even require a 3D treatment, I don't believe something like this is one of them. Sorry if you disagree.

I don't 3D, always gives me eye strain and headaches.

That aside, it barely ever adds anything worthwhile.

The biggest and best movies are made in 3D? That's funny, pretty much all the enjoyable movies I've been watching recently weren't in 3D, while the ones I avoided were.

Also, I think the last person to really have anything to say about other people's works cheapening the medium is Mr. Cameron himself, as he's started this fad that a lot of unimaginative movies have started to follow.

I always thought the point of Piranha 3D was to be so bad its good, so ripping on it for reasons like that just seem as though he's completely missing the point.

Apparently James Cameron is unable to grasp the concept of "Parody" or perhaps we should all just re-release the brainless and meaningless "Dances with Smurfs" with Extra Ponytail Sex back into the theatres.

Removing one's head from one's ass would be a nice suggestion for Cameron.

PS: I just remembered I still owe him an extra punch to the groins after the crap-feast known as Titanic, terribly written with plain and boring two-dimensional characters... seems like a trend of his. So that's 3 punches I still need to give him.

The "biggest and best" films are being made in 3D? I guess this guy doesn't think much of Christopher Nolan, then.

"When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip."

And you putting Avatar, that font of creativity and originality, back into theaters TOTALLY isn't milking any blood from any turnips.... douche.

I'm with Cameron on this one. I loved the 3D in Avatar because it showed depth of field. Piranha 3D and the upcoming Resident Evil movie (which I refuse to see under any circumstances) use it as an excuse to throw things at the screen. I hate it hardcore.

First of all in my opinion Avatar was not a piece of art for being in 3D and I think that he is hating on this movie cause of a past history he had with it. I saw Avatar in 2D and left unimpressed. The only difference between 3D and 2D is the headache afterwards. I hope that this gimmick will only be a passing fad and I think that we could something much more with movies that that whole, LOOK AT ME POINTING THEEERRRREEEE!

No!

What we should be doing is forcing the same film we saw like last year, back into the cinema with "added bonus scenes".

I hate you Cameron. Go away now.
Oh so very true. He has nothing to say about scraping the bottom of the barrel when the biggest film of all time needs to be rereleased for some extra cash.

And I sure hope we don't start calling him "the man behind Avatar..." I would much rather remember him for Terminator 2.

Cameron: "Damn it, you imbeciles! 3D is meant for art, not this special effects for the sake of special effects bullshit! Gawd!"

While I don't care for 3D (gives me a headache), I absolutely loved this movie. It has been ages since I laughed as hard as I did during some of the scenes in it.

This man just keeps losing the respect I had for him, first the thing where he chewed out that fan, then Avatar, then throwing gamers under the bus, now this.

3D sucks, it's distracting, annoying, bad for those with eyesight trouble, and something that takes money away that could've been put to use In the movie, Pihrana 3D, while I have not seen It, looks good, why, It has Ving Rhames playing a silly kickass role, and Christopher Lloyd being Christopher Lloyd, It's not meant to be taken seriously, James Cameron just has a stick up his ass cause people have stopped talking about Avatar.
