The Japanese originals are normally a lot more violent and dark, once they get dubbed the US marketing guys fluff it up, happened to One Piece apparently (I wouldn't know because I've only ever watched the western version).

Battle of the Planets is a good example, I grew up in France where we had the Japanese version, in one episode Zoltar kills the population of an entire city, in the US version the main character Marc (Ken the Eagle in US) comments how they evacuated the city. Marc also dies in the last episode by crashing the Pheonix into Zoltar, but in the US, he survives the crash.

I'm not sure if that's really relevant to this discussion, but I found it peculiar.
My Uncle once told me that showing lady bits was illegal in Japan, its why they started making cartoon porn, not sure on the validity of that but it kinda makes sense.
