Many of you have been asking us to post a link as to where you, our awesome community, can donate to those in need after the earthquake in Japan. While there are many groups trying to raise money, the main question was "which ones are legit?" It is unfortunate that some groups are creating scams to make money when so many people could really use it.

However, if you would like to know more about how to donate, please visit the American Red Cross website (link below to their "newsroom"). If you are not American (although I don't think it matters where the donations come from), please use the "contact us" button to ask if there is a reputable non-for-profit agency taking donations in your area.

A big thank you to all of you who have already contacted us wanting to help.

I must sound like an ass, but is it really necessary to send money to one of the richest countries in the world? I mean, aren't governments around the globe already sending aid teams and emergency goods? Which are exactly the things they need? This ain't no unprepared, poor Pakistan or something.

Hell I even heard (note: just heard) that they don't even want so much help.

Alternatively, donate via Google [http://www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html]. They have four ways to donate direct thus far (Japanese Red Cross, UNICEF, Save the Children and International Medical Corps)and various other useful tools. Although right now, Japan needs more nuclear engineers than anything else.

I'd also like to note that the International Associations of Japan around the world are now accepting donations going directly to the disaster funds.

日米会館(Nichibei Kaikan) - Japan-US Association http://www.us-japan.org/
日英会館(Nichiei Kaikan) - Japan-UK Association http://www.japansociety.org.uk/
Japan - Australia Asossciation http://www.jafa.asn.au/

In my neck of the woods, the 日墨会館 (Nichiboku Kaikan Japan-Mexico Association) is going to host a concert with j-rock and j-pop with the proceeds going to the disaster funds. Can't wait to start the fund-raiser with my friends and help as much as I can.

Ah. Well, carry on then. Nothing bad about returning the favour.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand done. That's my good deed of the year. I keep hearing about hospitals which are low on supplies and, evacuation centers that are low on supplies. I'm half tempted to donate some of my blankets too but, I have no idea where to send them

I've heard that they've asked for the foreign aid to be directed to the poorer islands that also got hit, those that weren't as prepared. That might be what you're thinking of.

OT: There's also a phone number (90999) that you can text "REDCROSS" to for a donation of 10$. I almost did that myself before I remembered that my phone has an annoying habit of occasionally sending one text 18 times. So, website link and credit card, eh?

Link to phone thing: http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_nolnav_text2help

Me, I've donated a few bucks out of each paycheck over the course of problem. The Red Cross is really the only charity organization that I donate to; their cause is worthwhile and they're fairly trustworthy. They're big and probably have a lot of overhead, yes, but they're good people.

Want To Help
This is indeed a very nice Thread and I thank you for posting it up. It is highly unfortunate of Japan to go through this plus other situations are happening like the firefighters sacrificing themselves to save their country.. noble men indeed.

I wish to tribute but I seriously do not have a job nor any way to pay for it. Is there any other way I can tribute to Japan? Perhaps an event that I can work for to donate or doing something.. because I seriously wish to help but I am limited. Anything would be nice and I would really appreciate it overall.
Pray.

I just got done working an anime convention this weekend. Between our Charity auction, donation boxes stationed around the hotel, and the charity raffle, we raised $36,744.42 for the ARC Japan Relief Fund. Suffice to say, our guests were elated and our one Japanese guest (Tadao Tomomatsu, Mr. Shake-Hands Man from "Banzai!") was literally weeping during the closing ceremonies when he heard how much we raised.

So yeah, I'm kind of coming off a convention high right now, but I wanted to share that with you guys.

Here's an awesome way to donate: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200591938668&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
This guy is selling a huge Lego model of a Star Trek ship, and donating all the money to the disaster relief.
