Japanese defense considering building Gundam.

So many reasons why this is a bad idea. First of all, it's prohibitively expensive to build even a prototype of modern military hardware, let alone a 70 foot bipedal mech. Second, that's gonna be an easy target in this era of drone strikes and offshore guided missiles. Third, this has no practical use whatsoever. Producing enough of these things to be a viable combat operations force would bankrupt any country, let alone one that's already in an economic tailspin. Add in the costs of maintenance, reloading and refueling, and it's enough to make your citizens why you ever took their giant action figures out of the box. Leaving them sitting on standby for personal defense against...jihadist kaiju, I dunno...that's gonna mean that your trillion dollar project becomes obsolete in a hurry with no return on your investment.

If the otaku vote is really that powerful (I doubt it), and you desperately need their approval, tell them that you'll petition for their right to marry fictional characters. You're just one life pillow away from discounted health insurance!

I think the Uk gets spacemarines and dreadnoughts
We get the pick for any mechs from the entire 40k universe. I think the crisis suit looks a bit cooler and more mobile than the dreadnoughts.

Metal gear has taught me two things.

1) War changes, despite what the fallout guy says.

and 2) bipedal giant mechs are a bad idea because it's very easy for some guy with a mullet and bandana to take it down with a few well placed rockets.

Also, isn't a giant ANYTHING a bad idea with modern technology? You know, easier to take down with air strikes and missiles and such. Maybe they're just going to build a human sized exoskeleton that look like gundams. That sounds awesome.

Silly Japan, you of all countries should know that the Zaku came first!

In all seriousness though, this is a terrible idea. It'll be a big, limbering target.

This is probally what it'll end up as:

but in all seriousness americas already got exosuit prototypes so it shouldnt be hard for japan to get mechs considering how fast they develop tech

Remember, whoever you get to pilot,s/he must be a teenager who is massively dysfunctional with self esteem issues, estranged with one of their parents or it won't work as well.
Either that, get the director to create an emotionless clone of his dead wife
your confusing Eva with Gundam.

OT:

>.> as much as i like Gundam, this is kind of a bad idea

Power armor would be 'better' but we're entering an age of drone warfare, so unless its gonna be a mobile doll, um no, bad idea.

and that's not even getting into upkeep x.x

I suppose the Northern Territory has a lot of resources, but it is kinda a hole.
Well, yeah, that's why i picked it.

I figure if you asked the army to take on a gundam with 30mm cannons for hands for one of the coasts, they might actually want to fight. If they're being asked to take on a giant anime robot to take back the bloody NT, nobody will do anything.

This isn't a good idea. I mean, remember what happened in Code Geass? As soon as someone invented those, the Brittanians used them to take over everywhere because they were so practical and useful and good for fighting and unlikely to fall over in one good legshot/ recoil from their crazy weaponry.

*crosses fingers in hope of it being more Armored Core style mecha than NGE*
Well, we dont have any angels to clone lying around here, so I think you are safe from NGE style mecha :p
Good. Im pretty sure that a EVA would cause the fabric of reality to warp just from existing... seeing as 99.99% of all giant Mechas defy physics...

...

...

...and that would probably include the ACs too... Hmm, maybe the ACV versions are possible.

And I believe thats just a police model...

Here is one of the military model landmates from the movie
I say do that, and while we're at it, let's start a world war three, but instead of nuclear warheads, we use mechs. That way, we can all have our fun with robots, beat the shit out of each other, and fix our economy in the process...

I say just kidnap children and make spartans instead.. At least they could jack the mechs if those are made..

Human-sized bipedal mechs would be badass infantry.
Not sure giant mechs would be of any use though.

What I want to know is how the hell will they fund this thing?! Japan has a strict rule against spending more than 1% of its GDP on the military for.....Pretty obvious reasons.... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshima_bombing]. Heck, thier government threw a fit when someone suggested getting afew F/A-22 Raptors because it would have pushed the budget over 1%. AND NOW THEY WANT TO BUILD A GIANT ROBOT?!

EDIT: From the wiki: "The code name for the under-development Japan Self-Defense Forces advanced personal combat equipment is "Gundam". On the display exhibition on November 7, 2007, the equipment of the set contains infra-red camera and scope that can verify if the incoming target is a friend or foe, along with a monitor display that can browse the internet. The equipment has a total weight of 9 kg and the powered suit can run for 8 hours. The testing team consisting of troopers claims that the major improvement should be focused on increasing the battery life of the system. The researchers are also aiming for funnel type systems including missiles that can stay/hover in air and mini scouting robots."

Maybe this is what they are talking about?

Fuck yes! Just seeing a gundam fighting would be enough to make anyone surrender, go Japan!
