Japanese Military Builds Hovering Robot Drone

All the cool countries are building flying drones these days, and Japan is no exception.

The drone, developed by the Japanese Self Defense Force, is lightweight, compact and surprisingly agile. Sankaku Complex reports:

It is 42cm in diameter, 350g in weight and can fly for some 8 minutes, being capable of reaching speeds of 60km/h. Autopilot systems are said to be under development.

Interestingly, the machine's developers claim to have bought most of its components in Tokyo's Akihabara district, a notorious geek haven and technological mecca.

Word of Japan's flying drone sphere comes hot on the heels of DARPA's robotic hummingbird drones [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.289939-US-Military-Spawns-Stealthy-Robotic-Hummingbirds], and like its avian American counterpart, Japan is hoping the sphere will prove invaluable in surveillance and reconnaissance roles.

Of course, since Japan's military is dedicated entirely to defense of the country, it's unlikely that these floating black balls will be darting around the deserts of Afghanistan any time soon.

Though still officially a prototype the "spherical flight vehicle," is already a hit with the media. Anywhere else that would translate into a thoughtful televised exposé on the device, but this being Japan, things are done a bit differently. Translation: They filmed the drone chasing an attractive young woman up a flight of stairs.

Truthfully I was a bit non-plussed about the idea of yet another autonomous drone until I saw footage of the thing in action. Not only does it seem incredibly capable -- that bit where it rolls around on the ground seems to demonstrate a brilliant design capacity to avoid impact damage -- but it also exudes an air of Orwellian menace purely by virtue of being a hovering black sphere.

Of course, this being Japan, things are done a bit differently. I won't be entirely shocked if the final production model of this thing is sponsored by Sanrio and sports a dainty red bow [http://www.sanrio.com/characters/].

Do you know what made this video great? TOP GUN MUSIC!

It is hilarious listening to that 'AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!' song and then basically what amounts to a toy. Now, add some guns; then I believe you could get away with that song.

"...danger zone, danger zone."

Proof that in 20 years, the JSDF will have fully functional mechas equipped with lasers.
Kick ass, Japan, kick ass.

make it smaller, paint it gold, 2 more sturdy enough to receive a bat, one regular soccer ball, 3 hoops in each side of a large field and mix them with the hover bikes from Australia

you know you want to, real live no tricks, actual flying Quidditch

Why does Japan get all the cool stuff? We must copy this technology immediately, and then turn it into a children's toy, and then I can buy one.

That's pretty cool.

Anyone else instantly think half life?

OK, now make it powerful enough to lift up a full grown adult and put a chair on top of it.

A very interesting piece of work, and well-made I suppose. The one thing that's bothering me about it though is...

This is exactly what I thought when I saw it. I can imagine these drones yelling "EXTERMINATE" as they shoot Japan's foes.

Reclaimer!

Seriously, make that thing fire a laser. Then we'll talk. The japanese will almost certainly do their part to make it adorable.

You have no idea how accurately you read my mind as I watched that video. I was about to post such a thing, then I read the rest of the article, kudos to you good sir. It is not hard to imagine these things patrolling the blocks surrounding the ministries of truth or justice is it? Kudos to you, sir.

Also, she is attractive isn't she? Oh Japan, don't ever change. Or maybe just become a little less xenophobic but stay the same every other way.

Wow ... the most interesting part of this is that Japan is maintains a Standing military force as Article 9 of the United States sponsored Japanese constitution renounced war as an instrument of national policy and forbade the establishment of Japanese armed forces.

cool you learn something everyday

I already am envisioning a horific future warzone where black, spherical robots hover around searching for human flesh to singe. And every single one's got a nice cute manga graphic on it's underside telling you to be sure to try the all new Hello Kitty Bubblegum Flavoured Spring Water as soon as you get a chance. ^^
