Death row [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8247319.stm] prisoners in Japan are being driven towards insanity by harsh conditions, according to human rights group Amnesty International.

Apparently many of the prisoners are now old men having been kept in isolation for decades. There are 2-3 exercise periods in a week other wise they have to remain sseated in their cells. Prisoners are not allowed to walk around their cell. They are not allowed to talk to other inmates. You are given about an hours notice when its time for execution which amnesty feel is cruel. The combination of these factors drives most of the inmates insane.

So are these conditions cruel? Does it really matter if you are killing them anyway? Why are executions taking up to 40 years to be carried out?

Your thoughts.

Having formerly (and sometimes still) worked in corrections I can say that's outragously overboard. How do you expect someone to not cause you any problems in that situation? What leverage do you have against them? Isolation is used as a punishment of those who break the rules within the faciliity. Not just because.

By doing this you put your officers in danger or what if they are granted release? Now what do they do? Go to an asylum.

There is a reason I can sit in a mod with 60 violent individuals and not get the shit kicked out of me (like I am RIGHT NOW) it's cause I talk to them and treat them like people. Even though they don't deserve it.

Sure it's an awful example of how low humans can treat others, but it does show that Japan is serious about punishing capital offenses.

They shouldn't kill them, they should let scientists do tests on them so they can better understand the effects of isolation on the human mind.

Nawww poor death row inmates aren't being treated properly. They would have a right to complain were these people not some of the most treacherous people on earth.

Although to be honest they shouldn't be kept around for decades, atleast execute them sooner. Saves money and time for the tax payer/prison system/government

No, the death penalty is cruel enough as it is. At the very least they should be put out of there misery soon after the verdict. Anything else is just barbarism.
I know that in America there's a long peroid between someone being sentanced to death and the execution being carried out because of all the legal proceedings and appeals which are needed to execute someone. While I'd say some people would deserve that sort of treatment, it sounds needlessly harsh to me if I'm honest. I wonder why Japan has such a high conviction rate?

That is a bit overly harsh. Why not just hurry up and kill them? It's actually a very quick process, if you don't fuck it up.

Making a bad situation into a good one, I like it.

O.T. Death Row should just be, "are you guilty", "Ye" cut off by a short drop and a sudden stop.

They're on death row, the deserve punishment, not rehabilitation. However when something like this threatens other country's thoughts on the ethics of aforementioned nation, it's a different issue altogether.

Yeah well, I think the whole concept of death penalty is barbaric and totally not something that belongs in the 21st century, so yeah...

Agreed. If you are going to have the death penalty then it should be quick and out of the way as soon as they are trialled.

Partly because it is cruel (which makes us just as bad as them) and also because it's completely pointless. Why spend money on guards, food, electricity, water etc. to keep somebody alive in a small cell so they can wait to die in years time? It's stupid.
