It's About Damn Time.

In a seemingly odd business decision, Terrance Woodburrow, CEO of Greenville Jetpack Rentals, is planning to introduce a new, you guessed it, jetpack rental service in, that's right, Greenville, South Carolina.

It all began when billboards toting the new service started popping up all over the city. A man in shirt and tie, on his way to work in style in his rented jetpack. Probably sounds too good to be true, right? Well, maybe. It honestly all seems somewhat hokey. You see, according to sources, there are no records of Greenville Jetpack Rentals or Burrow listed in the Secretary of States office. Though CEO Woodburrow does seem to have a somewhat credible-looking facebook page. [https://www.facebook.com/terrance.woodburrow] Suspiciously, Woodburrow only has fifteen friends at time of writing, all recently added, and has not spoken a word to anyone requesting details. Not even news and media outlets.

Now that's commuting.

Interestingly enough, the website [http://greenvillejetpacks.com/] advertised on the board seems to shed some more detail on the whole scheme. The company will offer a service of training and rentals, with single member rentals starting as low as a dollar a day, to an annual family membership costing $600. All memberships are to receive a two-hour training course and license. And if the test program proves to be a success, they'll branch out to Denver, Los Angeles, and San Diego by 2017. But really, is there any price you wouldn't pay for a jetpack?

Again, sounds way too good to be true. Just a huge prank? Well, maybe not. Earlier yesterday, youtube user Chad McKinney [http://www.youtube.com/channel/UChXcTN5Iqu5JDkyCvG7O4zw] posted a video on YouTube showing what appears to be a man flying in a, all together now, jetpack. Though the more discerning eye may see a bit of fakery in the video. Still, nothing has been proven.

Though it is worth noting that the user and video were both created on the same day.

Another question springs to mind: "Why Greenville, of all places?" The answer, it seems, is quite simple.

"The topography, the size of the downtown and the mild weather make Greenville a perfect fit for launching our Jetpack Rental program," - Terrance Woodburrow

As a city resident for the past seven years, I can attest that the statement is mostly true. Mild, but sometimes unpredictable.

So, a seemingly superb step towards the future? Or just an expensive hoax? And would you even be willing to try it out, if it were true? Let me know!

South Carolina is near enough to North carolina that I now expect these people to be at the Expo in October. Escapist make it so!

It seems plausible.

The traditional jetpack from the 60's offered roughly 30 seconds of flight. The page for Greenvile Jetpacks shows an image of a modified, single prop Martin Jetpack:

Martin Jetpack [http://martinjetpack.com/], which isn't really a jetpack at all but rather a backpack housing two shrouded propellers, was the focus of attention several years ago as DARPA was very interested in them. I think it could achieve roughly 30 minutes of flight on five gallons of fuel.

Even if it were a hoax, I couldn't blame anyone for believing, because the Martin Jetpack is a real product nearing the final phases of testing:

*EDIT* I just noticed at 1:48 in the video you can see what appears to be a reserve chute just above the dummy. This is, of course, in addition to the regular parachute. I would expect no less for taking your own life into your hands!

Upon closer inspection of the Greenville site, it's clearly fake. The Martin Jetpack isn't electric. It uses gasoline. The dream continues!

Yeah, besides the fact that the Sighting videos are fake, this will be cool if it's true. Heck, I might want to rent one!

To me, the stupidest part is that the Martin Jetpack is real. According to The Consumerist [http://consumerist.com/2013/03/07/is-greenville-sc-actually-getting-jetpacks-or-is-this-just-cruel-viral-marketing/], they contacted an ad agency who admitted they were somehow involved, but...I wonder, what's the point in perpetuating a hoax about an actual product?

Say what you will about the validity about this; I want one. I have a fifteen minute drive to the city I work in. I would love to fly that distance in the summer! XD

So it turns out that the attempted viral campaign was for:

A bicycle sharing program. Sadly, it wasn't for jetpacks )= The program is fee-based and will share 28 bicycles between 6 stations.

I just want to say again that I think it's silly to advertise a REAL product in a fictitious way.
That's not how you do viral marketing.
