We're relevant enough for people to try to make and pass laws limiting what we can and can't do with our games.

Oh... and to those "law makers"... things like this certainly don't help.

One day Internet anonimity will be a thing of the past. We'll realize that as a collective we don't deserve the privilege of voicing our opinions without accountability. It will be a huge sacrifice but it will be a better world where sick fucks like these will either cower in their rooms, careful to hide their true nature or be tossed in a cage where they belong. Maybe then we'll be able to tell our children to take a long, hard look at those freaks and make sure to never become anything like them.

I'm ashamed when I think monsters like these feel welcome in a community I'm so attached to, that I might have any overlap with these creeps. This society is sick and the worst part is most people don't realize just how far the infection has spread. This is a serious fucking issue and anybody pushing it aside while they roll their eyes is only making it worse. If you are to lazy and self-absorbed to do anything then don't bother but at least don't get in the way and certainly don't build a wall for these criminals to hide behind as many are doing apparently without their own knowing.

It's friggin' common sense, but, YES, there is a right way and a wrong way to complain or criticize someone, anyone, including a game developer that let you down.

I was one of the many, many people disappointed with ME3's ending, but I certainly didn't act like they personally went out their way to insult my mother or offend me. They screwed up, admitted it, and spent quite a bit of time and money doing the unheard of thing of reworking the entire ending to better please the fans. There were plenty of irrational, and rational, people. I was actually quite pleased that fans sent them cupcakes in red, blue, and green colors. That's clever. That's harmless. That gets the point across in a pretty imaginative and memorable way.

But don't you threaten somebody with death, or threaten their children, or threaten them with rape, or bully and harass them into hiding.

I'm going into this industry right now. I was mentored by a game developer who claimed that nearly 99% of all game developers will screw up their first three games, and most of them then quit before they get around to making the fourth one which people will more likely enjoy. It's long and soul-crushing enough to spend YEARS of your life on something that people throw back in your face and tell you sucks, but it's beyond unreasonable to expect anyone to deal with that amount of stress and pressure in addition to death threats and constant, undeserved harassment.

So, as someone making games right now, I'm sorry gamers of the world, but more than likely my first few games will suck as I learn the ropes and hone my craft. I hope you don't threaten me with rape and murder when I screw up, because I'm really trying to get better.

You know what Jim? if you can get us a video of you quite litterally diddling yourself with the dragon dildo, I will do everything in my power to not be a sick fuck for a full week. Hard it will be, but with the promise of something as exotic as that at the end . . . well, I think we can all agree it'd be well worth shutting the hell up for a least a few days.

EDIT: quick addittion, I saw in someone else's comment a quote calling Phil and Hepler wussies because they worked as a bouncer. I get the feeling, whoever you are . . . that likely, you're between the ages of about oh, 20 and 35, male, huge, and likely are not married nor have children. Consider instead of just the vague idea of someone threatening the children you don't have, that someone threatened to meticulously and thoroughly destroy everything you hold dear, everything that has meaning for you and everything that makes your life worth living. That is what I get from the people I am friends with who have kids, that's the feeling I get from my own parents. Chances are Hepler has small children, probably not even in highschool, that means it's fairly safe to say if some 20 something psycho came at them with a bit of pipe, they'd be more or less helpless, an instant statistic if you will. That knowledge for a parent is HORRIFYING. Then someone calls you out on that horrifying thought, that's not something you can brush off.

Some drunken asshole threatens to kill you while stumbling around and barely able to hold themselves up seems a little less serious than someone meticulously speaking their words with complete sobriety.

Remember, the scariest people in this world aren't whacked out on meth or heroine, they're calm, collected, and ready to strangle you even as they smile and laugh at your jokes.

... Lately I'm starting to think videos and articles like this are making things worse. The worst targets of these sort of things are usually those who are related to a person or company perceived as ignoring feedback. By lumping everyone together the way these things do, more people feel like they're being ignored and go to further extremes in an effort to at least feel like they've been heard. I see so much more toxicity after everyone of these sorts of videos and articles that it's getting really hard to ignore.

Threatening people and their families isn't acceptable, but if you're making things worse by raging about an instance of it you probably shouldn't be doing that either.

If relinquishing my anonimity could protect people from unfiltered abuse, I would not doubt in relinquishing it. I have not stated anything that wasn't implicit in my last post but for your benefit I clarified further.

I like how Jim says entitled is used incorrectly and then uses it incorrectly. He's not wrong that fuckers have a very warped sense of entitlement when they feel justified in threatening someone, but it's a bit off to tell them they are entitled to do so.

If your first response to a game creator doing something you dislike is to get personal with them and threaten their families, you waive any righteousness you might have had. Seems like a no-brainer ... yet so few of us seem to have brains.
Awesome video Jim! And thank you for saying this. I recall making an attempt do support and defend Ms. Hepler when this first got going (before the most recent shit) and I got yelled at and called nasty names on this very website for doing so.

So thank you Jim for telling all those idiots to go fuck themselves. I applaud you for doing so. And, furthermore...

I thank the gods for you, Jim Sterling. Keep up the awesome.

Because the rest of the world doesn't see individuals, the rest of the world only sees the collective and the actions of these few very vocal morons are seen to be the example of the entire collective.

Why am I having to explain this?
Firstly, you aren't having to explain anything.

Secondly, anybody who gives enough of a fuck about gaming and gamer culture to know who the hell Hepler even is(and honestly, a week ago I think it's fair to say we pretty much all forgot that someone called Jennifer Hepler got a load of shit ages ago) would see this story through the lens of people like Jim 'Fuck You you idiots' Sterling and sites running this and calling it a 'plague'. We aren't as relevant on the world stage as you seem to think.
Still doesn't make me want to associate myself with these diackheads or call myself a gamer for that matter.
Who says you need or have to, thats entirely individual as far as im concerned and its not your duty and neither are you obligated to label yourself as such, or on the other hand, label said people as gamers. The reality still stands, there are always a few bad apples that spoiled the bunch, birds of a feather flock together yknow.
I'm not obligated to and I don't. My point is that if these people are any example then being a gamer is hardly a condition to be desired, and before you say anything else, you can bet they identify themselves as gamers.

So Jim, are you going to talk about it every week when a troll says something mean on the internet? Trying to act as the vanguard against the horde of internet meanies is clearly a fool's game. The best way to deal with trolls is to just not talk to them and not acknowledge them. It seems more to me like you're just making more work for yourself every time one of these videos pop up.

I can normally get behind your points, but I've never found common ground with you on how you handle anonymous shitbags on the internet.

EDIT: and as an addition, I find it ridiculous how people label this as a problem for the community at large. Like we are intentionally finding new ways to blame *ourselves* instead of the people responsible. We label it not as some dickweed saying something awful and disgusting, no, it was *gamers* as a whole who did that. Not sure why we feel the need to do this as opposed to people who say, watch movies or read books (Did you know Stalin once read a book? Book-readers really need to sort themselves out and stop being so hateful).

Because that's really only giving them what they want. The trolls don't want to be exposed or have the limelight shine upon them to be labeled as the jerks they are. What they want is for other people to feel bad about their own actions. Because that is how they win. They win by having everyone all at once feel self-guilt and despair about the otherwise completely baseless and stupid things they spout to feel important.

so when I come into this thread and see 9 pages of "OH VIDEO GAME COMMUNITY, THOU ART THE CESSPIT OF VILLAINY AND MOIST GRAVE OF THE MIND". Grow up, stop giving them what they want. The guy who said that is probably furiously jerking his ego off to the notion that thousands of people all around the internet simultaneously stopped what they were doing and started flogging themselves to *be better people* over the things that he said.

A woman is threatened on the internet in a grossly disproportionate manner. I was wondering when we'd have a brouhaha about how some stupid people doing stupid people shit and one/some woman/women taking it all too seriously means that gaming is sexist and we're sexist.

BRB, gotta flaggelate.

And in case you're wondering, no I didn't watch past the first minute or so, there really isn't a need to at this point.

Lady Victim, evil sexists, misogyny, gaming needs to change, THE ISSUE, etc.

Edit: Well blow me down, I've since been convinced to watch the video and while the basis of the whole thing has only happened because someone thought it was acceptable to lay into a woman, the content itself managed to subvert expectations. Good work Jim I guess.

Too bad you didn't feel the pressing need to stand up and be the hero we apparently needed when all the men you mentioned were getting threatened with death, but better late than never I guess.
He didn't even say ANYTHING about feminism or violence against women, he just said it was a horrible thing to do, bringing up the women first only because hers is the controversy of the hour. Why is everyone so scared of feminism, its getting pathetic.

What is the most recent shit?

All I've found is this article [http://metro.co.uk/2013/08/16/bioware-writer-quits-after-death-threats-to-family-3925970/] which is a perfect example of tabloid journalism, which made false claims that the Threats were why she was leaving.

edit: The issue here seems to be the sensationalist media trying to stir up a shit storm to increase traffic. I wonder how many of these "issues" are really issues.

Can we get a Jimquisition on that?

The person who tried to make this all about sexism was you.
Look man! It's sexist to assume only woman can birth kids.

On that note... I agree with your assessment that Retrograde's opinions are moot from here on out.
Well, there was that one guy who was pregnant, but it turned out that he was a woman first.

Anyway, while it is unlikely, Retrograde COULD watch whole videos, and then make reasoned post latter, while on the Escapist. Tomorrow, 2.45 years from now, or even later today.

That said, I would not bet much money on it.

Yeah... it's appalling this even needed to be pointed out to some people...

Personally I thought Dragon Age 2's story (while a little disjointed and not up to Bioware's usual standards) was still leagues better than many of its contemporaries, thus derision on the writer of it is the last thing on my mind.

Doesn't work like that. You're supposed to practice what you preach, otherwise people won't care. That you see no point in having your ID disclosed at all times because most other people won't do the same is a way of thinking that can be applied to many other (far worse) things like, say, thinking it's pointless not to steal cars in the hypothetical scenario where most other people are car thieves, while still preaching that car theft should be illegal (that was an analogy, not a comparison to anonymous internet douchebaggery, in case anyone reading this is feeling keyboard-happy).
