Not really a big fan of casual/ indie games, but to each their own I guess.

Just don't say everyone should get more gaming platforms, like the iOS.

You mean like so?

My girlfriend has one and it's quite good, on android, plays some ps1 games. Only complaint would be low battery life.
I know about this thing, just forgot to mention it. That's why I named HTC and Nokia specifically and not SE. Samsung is definitely not the one to innovate in this area (they only copycat Apple). It's funny that SE phones are made by HTC.

Still, I don't think this is the ideal form factor. It's big and thin, thus the ergonomics suffers and due to the huge display, the battery life is crap. Something like Ngage is the way to go IMHO. I don't know about other people, but I like my phones small and such that they can work for at least two days. That means no big display.
I get what you're saying, I just didn't know if you knew about such a devise. I myself just have a small touch screen phone. They don't lend themselves to console style gaming, but they do to other styles of gaming. I think the way gaming took off came as a surprise to the manufacturers of these devises and we'll start to see phones with more and more features for gaming similar to the xperia play. This is still a new area after all. When gaming was young how many devises from now popular gaming companies failed outright, was quite a few.

And this is where my mind goes every time I hear someone trying to convince me that an iPod/Pad is a real gaming device. I've got a few really neat games on my HTC, but given the choice between my PSP/DSi or my phone, I'll got with the former everytime. If I'm on the loo or lying in bed and struggling to sleep, a few rounds of paper toss or tower defence is nice; but it's hardly something I'd go out of my way to play.

They're time wasters, little bite sized bits of entertainment inbetween my preferred activities of the day.

Indeed. I certainly wouldn't pay for the privlege of playing what essentially boils down to flash games.

They're not all like that, of course, but there isn't really enough there for me to consider it a serious gaming format.

I don't buy apple products, i object to their business practices, their media choke-holding of negative press, their pricing and most of all their intolerable fanbase BUT i do recogise mobile OS's as the biggest sector of gaming growth.
do you own an ipod ?
I own an MP3 player, not an iPod. An iPod is just a type of mp3 player which has evolved in capability.
The temptation must be hard though...

I gotta admit that there were some impressive looking games on that video. Especially considering they could be played on an iPod/iPhone/iPad. While I don't see Apple getting into the console market, I'm certain their handheld devices will be seeing plenty of use among gamers, and non-gamers, for a long time to come.

I've been watching this from the start and ONLY just realized that the background song is Jesters of the Moon!

I'm now off to beat myself over the head with my Princess Garnet model as penance
Is that the name of that song? I knew it was off FFIX (without referencing the credits) and I'm pretty sure I know what city it plays in. The one with the car tournament and the auction house, if memory serves. But I didn't know the name. Thanks for that.

If the iphone wasnt updated nearly every week and had a non contract top up tarrif as I dont use my mobile much ild buy one myself to play all those fantastic CAVE iphone ports like Espgaluda 2 and Deathsmiles.
The iPhone is only updated about once a year, this last update was after 16 months (most thought that was too long). However if you don't want a contract, you could always get an iPod Touch, works just like an iPhone with out the phone part and it has no contract.

Wait...this is a source of debate? Their App Store has a Game section and their Game Center has more than 65 million registered users. Like it or not, they are video game related. The actual debate seems to exist here in the comments where people discuss the implications and suggests ways to improve the experience.

Also, deriding anything as a "time-waster" is the highest form of hypocrisy. Everything we do in our lives can be seen as a waste of time from another person's point of view.

I am not a Apple/Mac or 'Mobile Gadget: Featuring Phone' fan but Jim has a point. I do not care about Steve Jobs, he was an ambitious figurehead and administrator but it is not like he alone developed the technology or is a "hero" in which deserves praises from political figures of our country. In fact if he wasn't around at all who knows if Apple would of been this successful without him, its possible.

However again, Jim has a point and despite how I feel about the company and products, its beneficial as they are ***** slapping the major game companies which should help them get their act together.

A bit more humor next time please, Jim. iPhones and iPod touches are legitimate gaming platforms takes maybe 8 seconds to say, making the rest of the four minutes or so pretty much filler. This is the same thing that happens every 'issue' show and without some wacky humor to go along with it it gets real boring real fast.

Completely agree. This episode was booooOOOriiiing.

They don't produce games, they produce the platform - An obviously non-ideal platform for games. Bored at work? Play on your iphone. Then come home, put the touch screen down, and play on a device that is better suited for gaming. No flames here, just the obvious truth.

I get the feeling Jim made up the opposite side of the argument here... Obviously the iphone/ipad belong in a gaming discussion - they are platforms for games. Were there really people arguing otherwise?

great, another stupid episode with ridiculous points. So if a phone OS can run games it suddenly becomes a force to reckon with? What a bunch of BS! Its nowhere near xbox or PS3. Granted, they are also called games, but they each take up their own niche. Its like saying that movie industry should fear all the TV series coming out as a rival in the medium. TV series will never be movies. Just like phone games will never be considered full-fledged games. Look at them technically: phone games are always technically simple, using gaming elements on a basic level, like simple stories, mechanics or physics. They are never sophisticated or complex, just like they carry no impact on the medium itself. Its not like phone games changed the industry, its games that changed the phones. While professional games is what drives the industry forward; where great stories are created, new mechanics developed and envelope constantly pushed. So saying phone games are on par with PS3 is one of the stupidest things you could have said!
Obvious troll is obvious.

Yes. The issue of people claiming apple news isn't gaming news is real too. Stupid people is stupid people is.

I am perfectly comfortable with Apple as a major gaming competitor, so long as they don't do what they've done with everything else and kill every other competitor under the weight of a million tea-tray shallow gimmicks. I will gladly accept Apple as being on par with Microsoft and Sony, so long as in doing so I'm not allowing apple to kill off console gaming completely and turn the whole medium into single-function iOS casual games. They can kill the DS and PSP in the handheld markets if they want, but the'd better not start harming my consoles/PC.
I dont see that happening, as the angry birds experience is very different to the red dead redemption experience and there will always be a market for both

PLUS, as bigger game experiences start to decline on consoles because of focus on smaller platforms, it would allow the PC devs to get more creative and have more freedom

That's not an insult to consoles, just saying what could happen for the only platform I currently play on, so don't freak out.
again thats where the paranoia comes from...the BIG eperiences will decline but I cant see that

because people still ove big experiences and will pay for them (not to mention the pro mouse, the pro mousepad, the HDMI cable, the special batman controller which lights up and the $120 headset)

Wait - there are still people denying the relevance of iOS in the gaming world? Oh dear. Look, numbers don't lie. I may not personally like the direction in which gaming is developing at the moment, but how can you look at the sales figures and popularity of iPhones and iPhone games and not acknowledge them as a relevant part of the modern video game world? It doesn't make sense.
