It's ironic that a game I applaud for shaming a corporate money-grubbing mentality because it succeeded on morally-superior indy development mentality is not going to get my purchase because I'm ashamed to see anyone playing a game about being part of a team of money-grubbing assholes who are so morally unreprehensible that they think nothing of gunning down innocents (and each other) in order to score a quick buck by performing a bank heist.

Even if it's "just pretend," this setting puts me in a moral crisis that was really unnecessary. I really want to encourage the former behavior of indy development without corporate fuckery, because I've been enduring decades of crappy games as a result. However, the backdrop of this game is so severely off the hook that I still won't vote for my wallet for it.

Not sure if this would be considered warning bait or not but it is just way too appropriate a response.
So now I can make games about plane hitting towers and achieving massive points by doing so. Geldonyetich is right. I'm talking about my exp. alone, but I come from a family of cops. I don't mind killing cops in a video game, but GTA for example is ludicrous about it. Payday is the only thing you do is gun down cops. Like a lot. That is why I used the 9/11 reference. People are so much into that double standard that some times it's hard to realize how sleazy and imoral some media stories became.
Also going back on GTA, that is one of the reasons GTA goes for the comic relief so much. Payday wants to be taken serious, when we know it simply can't. Another example are those eroge games made in Japan about raping youngster. Playing Payday (yes I played the first one) and saying well it's okay, it's not real, to me atleast sounds the same excuse as playing those eroge game and saying: of course it's not wrong. It's not real...
Because it's not wrong, it's not real. If a certain type of porn helps you get off, and it's not real, who is harmed by consuming it? You don't need an excuse to consume any fiction you like if it's not advocating anything. rapelay isn't advocating raping kids, it's porn. and if it helps you get off: Go download it right now , much better than going after real kids ain't it?

Your argument is pretty much "Well, if I accept payday I'd have to accept rapelay" while plenty of people DO accept rapelay for the exact same reason.

A game succeeded because it had good ideas, the devs stuck with them and they never set ludacris expectations on sales because the last CoD sold trillions... Well shit.

On the game though, I wanted to play the first one but the aiming was kind of stiff. But this one I really wanted to try out, but at my age over here, every friend that could play is busy to the point of exhaustion, and those that don't, can't afford the game. I'm looking forward for one of the free weekends on Steam though.

PD2 doesn't appeal to me, but that's the great thing about games with reasonable development and marketing budgets, made to appeal to their audience with game play quality and find that audience through word of mouth - they don't need to appeal to everyone to be successful. That kind of philosophy leads to more games appealing to more varied tastes, so there's more games appealing to any player, even if individual games don't try to appeal to every player.
The absolute truth right here.

There is nothing wrong with games that do appeal to a wider audience, but not every game should or has to. With so many games being made for so many uniqyue gamers by so many unique people, smaller niche titles are a huge benefit. The fact that gaming is such a wide and diverse thing these days where you can say "That game looks well made, but it's not for me" and not actually be left without something awesome to play for months on end is a great thing. It's one of the key reasons why I love the Souls games and don't put any stock in complaints about them being "too hard" or "too unwelcoming."

Payday 2 is basically (more) evidence to support what has been said multiple times already. Maybe the big publishers will take note.

Well said Jim. I've toyed with the thought of getting Pay Day, but I'd rather not do it unless I was certain three people I know got it. It'd be kinda like playing L4D alone. Technically possible, but it's just not the same.

Also how big is your damn draw of sex toys now?

No, the argument is because it is offensive. First ammendment rules sure protect their rights as one artist. Tell you what. Do you work? One that engage with multiple people with various background? Tell you what? Try explaining and describing your motivations for playing Payday or Manhunt. See their reaction.

Once again, as always, fuck you too jim. I would never say games HAVE to spend that much on marketing, but there's nothing wrong with AAA games that want to do that. Basically, it's like comparing say the avengers to a independant film. Also, I'm not a hardcore gamer. I suck, and if a game isn't catering to my low skill set, I'll move on. So no, not every game needs to be for hard-core. If payday 2 wanted to do that, thats fine(I know nothing about the game), but that's whats called a niche audience. Therefore, a massive marketing budget would be a waste. Once again, movies. Some movies are blockbusters meant for everyone and are still great(like avengers), some are meant for a specfic audience and are still good. It's called variety, jim. V. A. R. I. E. T. Y. I know you won't, but your dumb-ass might want to look up what the word means next time you post a video.

Oh and your examples are strawmen. Resident Evil started sucking ass a long time ago. The square stuff, I still think square has lost so much money between FF 14 and veruses that there expecting other studios to pick up the slack, which can't happen. And I don't nor care about dead space so I'll leave that one alone.
Missing the point AND tossing out the insults. You're just one big bag of fuckin' F, aren't you? :)

One more thing I have to say.

GTA comes out, and the media swarms over it being a horrible game for your kids.
Mass Effect is released and the media swarms over it being a Sex Porno Game that will corrupt your kids.
Modern Warfare is out and the Media blames various murders on kids playing the game.
Payday 2 comes out,a game LITERALLY ABOUT ROBBING BANKS...........and I haven't heard a single thing about the media going all over it for influencing our kids and making them want to rob banks in real life.

Is it bad that I am just waiting... EXPECTING... for the media to turn on Payday 2 in such a way?
It's not bad per-se to expect such things, but the way I see it, Payday is simply not mainstream enough to be lambasted by Fox News and other shitty news outlets. This game didn't spent a dime (or at least not much) on marketing, relying almost entirely on word of mouth and also let's consider it's only available for a not so mainstream platform (PC) and you can only buy it in digital form (Steam).

So yeah, I highly doubt that anyone outside it's niche even knows it exists.

You did that just to ruin DuckTales
Did someone say ruin Ducktales?

OT: It's always people too stupid to realize their opinions are stupid that are the cause of these various vitriolic rants that have been in the gaming news recently. Next time you see a rant like that gently educate the person on how dumb they're being.

Also, I would love to see Jim's opinion on the F2P Command and Conquer since IMO it exemplifies every bad development strategy that could possibly be crammed into one game.

I'd honestly be curious to see the actual numbers on this game, development cost, marketing costs, number of copies sold (and price per copy). It would be nice to see just how relatively successful the game has been and how much profit it garnered OverKill. I'm not expecting to see that it made $90981340198273048916023984 in profit, which seems to be what the big publishers are expecting of every game, but if it attained something like $5-10+ million in profit, for a small studio, that's HUGE, in my opinion. Even further, I would think if you had multiple such games that could pull such a relative cost/profit ratio, then it seems any studio/publisher could eventually build some major cash reserves from the aggregate.

ADDENDUM: A quick google search after posting this led me to headlines that the game made back its development cost on just the PRE-ORDERS ALONE! That means every further sale beyond that is nearly pure profit. That's...beyond impressive! A feat that, so far, has been impossible for the big publishers.

http://gamingbolt.com/payday-2-development-costs-covered-by-pre-orders
http://www.thegamersdrop.com/2013/08/09/payday-2-already-makes-profit-due-to-extensive-pre-orders/

Honestly, I kinda feel this vindicates something I've been saying for a bit, that the big publishers need to defocus from the AAA stuff and build a diversified portfolio of smaller games that will have lower development and market costs, yet, still sell reasonably well. Then, they can use the profit from those smaller games to hedge against the costs of the larger AAA game. Triple-A games are fine, but they are too expensive (in time, money, and effort) to be the singular focus of game development, in my opinion.

REally??? THATS the big scary marital aide people were pitching a fit over?? I thought it was going to be this scaly ribbed monster wang with serrated edges around the head with the tip like a fork and it was colored blood red and caca brown and given this name of something like "The Virgin Sacrificer".

...And i thought i was a prude.

I remember going to their booth at E3. They handed out masks and said if you wore the it while playing someone else's game, then they would give you some fake money.

Good for them for understanding who their target audience was instead of (shelling out gobs of money in) trying to target to an audience who would never pick it up no matter how appealing they made it out to be (and then whining about how much money is needed to make a game successful).

That was the point right?

Shows how in touch I am with most video games. I never heard of the first Payday, and first knew of PayDay 2 from a Penny Arcade strip last week. Thank God for you, Jim, for showing me this game made by folks driven by passion for their craft more than soulless profit!

This is from the press release everyone was reporting

Payday 2 developers said:
Not only have we managed to deliver a desirable product in Payday 2 but also executed a promotion that few companies of our size can
Does anyone know what promotion means? I assume it can't mean a marketing promotion (or else this video would be a bit...wrong), so did they put it on sale or is it just a google translate error (form the links it looks like the journalists were possibly working off an auto-translated press release)

Because of that Ducktails game coming out I've had that song stuck in my head for weeks, now it's stuck in my head with a dragon dildo flopping around.

Jim, just a thought. Maybe we didn't want to see the dragon tongue dildo bit at the end. That was disturbing. I have the overwhelming feeling your going to call me a repressed homosexual now, so I'm going to point out that I am an open homosexual, and that was still gross xD.
