How do you have a movie where the main character has less dialogue than his armor?
The story has a lot of dialogue. It's simple, you decide on the protagonist and go with it where writing is concerned. Based on a game does not mean identical to it. It actually never means that or it'd be unwatcheable.

Good, something for him to do when he's done ruining Star Trek and Star Wa- ...oh wait, that was already ruined. He can only improve Star Wars.
Are you particularly happy with the older Star Trek movies? I've found them to be almost unbearable and I'm actually a fan of Star Trek. At least the new ones are enjoyable albeit somewhat irreverent to the subject matter. The premise of the new line of movies is that this is an alternate universe. Just go with it as a universe that has more action and it's all good.

Read the article. There's a quote.
'?Valve co-founder Gabe Newell and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams announced they are working on an unannounced game project together.? Newell also announced that he is investigating the possibility of working with Abrams on a Portal or Half-Life film.'
So Gabe and Abrams are working on something, and also discussing a Portal or Half-Life film. That means whatever they are working on is NOT a film for those franchises.
I'll admit I liked 2009 Star Trek, but how much stuff are we going to pile on JJA before actually letting him make these films? Another Star Trek, 3 Star Wars, Portal/Half Life, Mission Impossible, and I'm pretty sure he said he wanted to do a Cloverfields sequel or similar film.
EDIT: Regarding people talking about how the Portal one fits into the existing storyline... Why does it need to? The main focus is in the title, the PORTALS. If the film uses the portals as a foundation it can go anywhere from there and work successfully in my opinion (if done well of course)

This is exactly how I feel. If any film is made to be about Half-Life or Portal, I don't at all expect it to be about the main events that have already happened or the main characters so far. The Half-Life universe has a HUGE potential for lots of stories, and there's lots that we know happened but we haven't seen happen. Like the Seven Day War, City 17 going to hell after Gordon leaves and before he arrives back from Nova Prospekt, the aftermath of the Black Mesa event during Gordon's absence...there are a lot of stories to tell that don't directly involve Gordon. And the same thing with Portal--they can show the rise and fall of Aperture, the aftermath of Chell's actions with the Ratman, or the stories of any other test subjects in Aperture. Trying to make a HL movie about Gordon Freeman, or even a Portal movie about Chell would be cumbersome because their stories would just be so hard to tell in a single film. It would be much easier to simply take the concept of each situation and either make a new story, or find a story that hasn't already been told and take a crack at it.
