I know I'm a little late to this end-o-year wrap party most people like to have to conclude the year on a positive note by counting down their top whatever of the year. However, this past year has been quite interesting to me in terms of gaming. Not only have I seemingly missed out on a fair number of titles that I almost entirely forgot but many of the most anticipated games fell short of their expected hype. An unfortunate fate for many but it's no time to look at what failed and instead on what succeeded. And with that, I give you my top 13 games of 2011. Why 13? Because I did 12 last year and I get bored easy.
Like with Assassin's Creed, Infamous 2 suffered from several stents of repetition leading me to boredom during my playthrough, but when this game picks up, it can be some of the most intense and entertaining gameplay one can experience today.
While I loved the original, its sequel managed to improve on nearly every aspect, with only its initial originality not holding up as best it could. Still, this is a great game and one of the best of 2011. Now if Suckerpunch can just work on their stupid morality system. It's the small problems that end up holding Infamous 2 back from everything it possibly could be but nonetheless, there is great fun to be had here.
Most likely something to garner hatred for my opinion as it did when I originally reviewed it, I stick by my original opinion that Dragon Age II is nothing short of fantastic. Like with Mass Effect, I wasn't a fan of the original Dragon Age and they share many of the same criticisms. Too lengthy, unnecessarily complicated in gameplay and had an all too familiar story.
II fixed all that by greatly improving the dialogue, making the gameplay far more accessible and fast paced and giving the general feel a novel story that worked better, if only in my opinion. Even if I'm one of the few who thought so highly of this game, I can't wait to see where Bioware take the series from here.
How could something that was so near perfection possibly be improved upon or even have a worthy successor? Well, by making it bigger, louder and more epic, of course! Batman: Arkham City was first a game that I felt lacked in comparison to its predecessor. The world felt too big, never allowing any character in its enormous cast to excel on their own, save possibly the Joker. The side missions even managed to, at first, take away from the severity of the main quest.
However, after repeated plays, my negative feelings towards Arkham City slowly faded and as stated in the original review, it truly shines in new game+ mode, making the gamer truly feel like the Goddamn Batman and what more can you possibly ask for? Perhaps a better ending, yes but that didn't negate my enjoyment. However, I somehow feel that my opinion of the game only strengthens upon repeated listens of its superb soundtrack.
This, on the other hand, is a game I was nothing short of addicted to when it first was released. Catherine is one of the most unique games I've ever played. It features a story rarely told in gaming and manages to make block puzzles some of the most intense moments of any game I've ever played.
Even the slowed down segments of simply conversing with fellow NPCs trapped in the same nightmare as our protagonist only served to envelop me in the experience further. The mature story arc mixed with a not-so-typical craziness that mimics an adult rated episode of the Twilight Zone easily makes this one of the best games of the year.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that my personal favourite game of the year is From Software's brilliant and brutal Dark Souls. Originally, I criticised the game for a fair amount of glitches and even issues with its difficulty curve. However, in a short time after its release, the developers did something that should be an example of how to handle technical problems in games; they fixed them (pay attention, Bethesda. These guys do it, it's not that hard).
The recent patches to the game completely make my previous gripes null and void. What's left is nothing but a perfect game. The story, while subtle, is one of the most superb I've ever seen, the gameplay is brutal but rewarding and its beautiful OST does nothing but make the game come alive and combined with its seamlessly connected open world, tops even the best of games that attempt the same.
Without a doubt in my mind or any form of reluctance, Game of the Year 2011 goes to Dark Souls

One of the first surprises of the year, Crysis 2 delivered one of the better gaming experiences I had played in a long time. I had not played the original, having not bought a 360 since my last one broke, which lead to a lot of confusion regarding its otherwise well done, albeit somewhat cliche, campaign.
While it tends to drag a bit during its intro, possibly due to my own ignorance of the story arc, after a few hours of gameplay, it becomes a prime example of what an FPS should do and should be. Huge, memorable battles that stick with you long after the credits role. An odd choice to bring it to multiple consoles but one I am quite happy about after getting to experience this first person shooter.

Being a huge fan of the Assassin's Creed series, I can't express both my excitement and wariness in regards to this installment. Despite it bringing back an older and much improved Altair along with the conclusion to Ezio's story, not to mention an answer to the horrid cliffhanger of Brotherhood, the staple gameplay elements of the series is starting to become stale.
Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened. While some tweaks have been made to gameplay in an effort to keep things as fresh as can be, this formula has been used again and again and its age is certainly beginning to show. Yet still, I had a great time playing through Revelations as its convoluted story of intrigue kept me glued to it until the end.

I know this is more or less a cheat, but being a Ps3 gamer, I only had the opportunity to play this at the start of the year, and what a brilliant way to kick it off. There's really nothing that can be said about Mass Effect 2 at this point or the series as a whole without repeating what's already been said. I was never a fan of the original though. It felt unnecessarily confusing in gameplay and its story, while good, didn't seem worth the frustration I continually felt during gameplay. That all changed the moment I booted up 2.
The combat is more fluid and while many passed it off and criticised it for being streamlined, this was to me a highly welcome change. Despite my initial hesitance towards the game, I was pleasantly surprised and soon sank over 40 hours into the main story. It wasn't everything it was cracked up to be but it was still a great game and I can't wait to see what's in store for 3.

A game that unrightfully flew under the radar, Atelier Totori is not only a game with a title I won't even attempt to pronounce, but is also one that serves as a nostalgic throwback to the earlier days of JRPGs. Painting a beautiful and colourful 3D world from its 2D predecessors and bringing its easy to manage but intricate turn based combat system, it can give many gamers who long for a bit of nostalgia just what they're looking for.
I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, by any means. It certainly isn't the most accessible in style or presentation and it is a must to turn on original Japanese voice acting but Atelier Totori managed to give me exactly what I wanted out of a truly traditional JRPG. It helps to note considering the extreme absence of this genre as of late.

I've never particularly been one for fighting games but there was just something about Marvel Vs Capcom 3 that managed to reel me in more than any other before it. Perhaps its the hyper-stylised action, vibrant colours, enormous cast of characters or just the ridiculousness of the entire package, this game had me constantly coming back for more, especially in its online modes, something I rarely ever do.
Even though it was a bit of a cheap move to release it originally early on in the year, then the expected Ultimate edition later, for those who waited, it was well worth the extra expense. Maybe it's just me, but I never get bored of watching Phoenix Wright fighting Deadpool with evidence and witness testimonies.

After the immense disappointment that was Resistance 2, I didn't play its sequel until just recently and any doubts I may have had for the game were quickly put to rest. This is exactly what a near perfect FPS should be. Insomniac ditched the ridiculous choices made with their second installment and went back to a more classic, natural feel for the series.
The previous game felt highly scripted, rigid and just overall lacking in true feeling. 3 manages to make up for its faults and deliver on its own by bringing back what the game was originally good at. A good story, phenomenal gameplay and beautiful graphics make the game worthwhile, even if its online play is somewhat lackluster.

Many have dismissed this game as being vastly inferior to its game changing predecessor but I feel Saints Row the Third takes a step in the right direction, combining even more compelling gameplay elements with its far out there sense of humour at full blast.
Taking "over the top" to an extreme by making any sort of description sound like the ravings of a lunatic but its this type of ridiculous gameplay and storytelling that makes Saints Row one of the greatest sandbox games I've ever played. The only issue with this game is the painful withdrawal I experience after I have to stop playing.

"Blaspheme!" I hear screamed across the internet. "How can you possibly put Skyrim as a mere number 3????" Well, first off, the game is by no means poor in any aspect. It is everything I had ever hoped it would be and I couldn't have expected more from Bethesda. That being said, there was a certain quality I felt was missing from the game that I noticed the very first time I played it. A certain addictive quality. 1 hour into my first day of Skyrim, I opted to play something else entirely. Why, I'm not entirely sure but there is just something about it that never seemed to click quite like I wanted it to.
This, nor the constant glitches kept me from sinking nearly 100 hours into the game in just a short while. An extensive world, bound to keep even the most hardcore of gamers occupied for hundreds of hours, one of the better battle systems I've played in a game and possibly Jeremy Soule's best work as a composer, Skyrim is one of the best games this year.

Before I continue on to number one, a quick mention to those games that didn't quite make the cut of top games this year, but at least deserve note.
Having only played the first Alice game recently, I wasn't quite sure what to expect but I was soon captivated by its unique gothic style the game had to offer. It's not often that platforming games intrigue me as much as Alice did but its style and source material kept me interested throughout.
However, it felt very much like the original, feeling more like an expansion pack than anything and about 8 hours longer than it should have been, resulting in a lot of backtracking and repeated levels.
After Unskippable's now infamous riff of the mind fuckery that is this game's wretched intro sequence, I feel the game got a lot of bad press resulting in gamers staying far, far away from this title. Unfortunately, Ar Tonelico Quoga became one of the more enjoyable games this year as it manages to feel like a faithful throwback to 2D JRPGs of the Ps1 era. Its story is solid, the gameplay is entertaining and quite tactical at times and the art style is nothing short of beautiful.
It's a good game all in all (ignoring its horrible voice acting, a soundtrack that sounds like it was composed by someone mentally disabled and characters that don't walk but rather hover while flailing their legs about) and one must take into account the horribly small budget developers were forced to work with. Plus, any game where nudity = power deserves some form of praise.
One of the most disappointing games for me this year, Deus Ex ended up falling short of its presceeded hype but still managed to entertain many with its captivating story and intriguing world.
It's unfortunate the game had so many drawbacks, including a wonky narrative, ridiculously bad boss fights and merely the illusion of 'choice,' it didn't keep me from seeing the game through and attempting to find redeeming qualities throughout, which it doesn't fall short of. However, I can't in any good conscience praise a game that falls into cliches so overused that even the most inept of writers know to avoid.
