The film is taking place in the Norwegian camp, plus the thing might have destroyed some of the structures before the original films takes place.
Nonononono. There was no structure buried in the ice, just a UFO. Unless they think that the UFO is a structure... It jut bugs me. >.<

If Tarantino's next film in 2012/13 also disappoints... I will end it all.
I think it's impossible for it to disappoint. You've got Jamie Foxx as a Slave Bounty Hunter, Leonardo DiCaprio as a Racist Cruel Plantation Owner, Samuel L. MOTHERFUCKING[footnote]Sorry about that, it's just that whenever I see/type his name I have to add in something yelling ************, since that's almost all he does in movies[/footnote] Jackson as a Wise Old Slave, and Christoph Waltz as a German Bounty Hunter. Also adding to the fun is a just for shits and giggles casting decision, with Kevin Costner rumored to be in the movie as guy who trains Leo's slaves to fight in Death Matches
Yes this surely does sound like an epic film. For once we've got DiCaprio as a villain, which means I can feel good about hating him for once. I've hated him for years in the "hero" role. But I swear, he better play this villain good... He has never struck me as the most versatile performer, although I've only ever seen him in 4 movies.

Then we've got Christopher Waltz, who was amazing as Landa in Inglourious Basterds. I hope this character is not too similar though. I mean a German Bounty Hunter is slightly similar to a German Jew Hunter, on paper at least. It will be challenging for him to make this character unique I think, because it will inevitably be compared to Hans Landa.

I haven't read much about the film apart from the details you mentioned, and the cast looks great. However great this film sounds, I am trying not to get my expectations up.

D: The Norwegian camp showed no evidence of having a woman station there.(Not sexist, it's true) ((ALTHOUGH, if she's the one of the first victims it'll be okay.))
I'm sure that they did this for the sole purpose of full frontal nudity, or possible explicit sex scene (ten bucks says 'the thing' violates her in some graphic sexual way). There is no other reason than that.

Sadly I think now a days if a movie doesn't have some exposed boobs,(or more and graphic sexual depictions), in it them a majority of male movie goers will not go and see it.

So it's a prequel to a remake of a movie based off a novella?

Hm...

Just saw the trailer. First impressions were not good.

Typical "strong female" lead as is the trend in recent horror movies. I have no problem with female leads, Ripley was a badass. But this trailer more reminded me of the squeamish type leads in "The Ring", "The Grudge" and crappy slasher films.

If you are talking about cliches, usually it's not the main protagonist who gets her jugs out. I mean obviously there's the obligatory carefully-shot shower scene, and probably a subsequent "walking around half naked while being watched" scene. But it's usually the bimbo who wasn't characterized enough who strips off completely and rightfully gets a machete in the face.

I didn't see any other women in the trailer, so I wouldn't count on any nudity in this (Which is good - The original was fine without nudity riiiight?). I certainly wouldn't count on her being raped by another species (Wtf?).

...hmm honestly though what is there to make a prequel of? The only thing I could think of would be the Norwegian science station...anything else would be the crashing of its ship :/

From what I gather, that's exactly what it's going to be. From the trailer and word-of-mouth I've heard and seen, it looks like this is going to cover the discovery of The Thing and what happened at the Norwegian station.

I am assuming that the prequel will be about the Norwegians who got killed by the thing
There's no point in even watching then,

We know that they'll all die but two, one of whom will plant an axe in the head of a third guy, they'll burn the remaining bodies, the two guys will by some contrivance be able to trust each other, they fight the thing, almost win, GET TO THA CHOPPA! Have the thing hiding in a dog and on the run, then some stupid Americans will get them both killed (Dun dun DUUURN!), roll credits.

I'm going to be one of those people: This is old news. Use the forum search before making a thread. I found out about this weeks ago, actually because people made threads like the one you have made.

In fact, Movie Bob mentioned it two weeks ago in his video "A Look Ahead":
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/4017-A-Look-Ahead

Edit: Skip to 1 minute 40 seconds in the video.

-----------------

I never saw the original, so I really couldn't care. But it does bring up the remake debate, or adding to a series debate.

Considering how long ago the first one was, I don't see a problem with it. Though if they some how smash up the canon of the original and/or don't pay attention to it so they can make more money by making it more open compared to horror movie make-ups of last decade, then fans, you have my condolences.

It's crap like that that ruins movie adaptions and fans end up with crap like the Eragon movie, which had so many changes and differences, it wasn't even the same story.

I recently went to see ?Don?t Be Afraid of The Dark.? An apt title, since there?s nothing in the movie worth being scared of. It delivers maybe one or two mild jump scares, but?well I don?t want to spoil it if you decide to see it for yourself, but let?s say it makes the same mistake ?Darkness Falls? did and tries to make something that?s really not scary the subject of a horror movie. I really don?t see why they gave it an R rating, either.

But there is one thing worth being afraid of that I saw when I watched that movie. It was one of the trailers. Brace yourselves: they?re making a prequel to John Carpenter?s ?The Thing.? Oh sweet merciful God, this is fraught with peril. Prequels are probably the most difficult kind of movie to make, because certain things have to happen for them not to conflict with what you know will happen in the movie they?re preceding, story-wise. This means you?ve got an audience that will likely not be surprised by the ending.

What isn?t helping matters is this prequel ISN?T being directed by John Carpenter. Instead, its being directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Never heard of him? That?s because this is his first major film, according to IMDB. Previously he directed a video called ?Zein? in 2004 and a short film called ?Red Rain? in 1996. So, this could either be a young new director?s big break to greatness or proof that you need a little more experience under your belt before you try to follow up what is arguably on one of the most famous sci-fi horror movies of the last 25 years. I think a lot of it will depend on whether or not he uses real, physical set pieces and props like Carpenter did?or if he does too much CGI. Either way, I?m nervous about how this is going to turn out.
Whoa you actually want John Carpenter to direct this movie? If he was anywhere near it then i'd actually be more worried about it. John Carpenter hasn't been good in over a decade.

Like every other movie I see i'll judge it after i've seen it and not before. People were going crazy about Rise of The Planet of the Apes way before they'd seen it and i finally saw it and loved the hell out of it.

The news of this movie was out months ago, rumours were around last year, where have you been? Film should be good, the effects are mostly models and puppets like the original....which in itself was a remake of a movie called The Thing From Another World, which was based off a book. So saying the prequel will suck seems silly as The Thing was a remake and book adaptation. But from what ive seen they are sticking to John Carpenters movie but i think it will be enjoyable but not as good as JC movie. Mostly as that film was moody, gritty, gory and downbeat. An it wont have a John Carpenter score either. Plus as we see what happens to the Norweigen group at the start of The Thing, atleast we know the prequel wont have a happy ending....which is a positive fact that shows this movie could be good.

oh gosh i hope they keep continuity. It will be rather hilarious to see them using modern computers and like windows 7 then in the movie that follows the events some how the technology goes to shit and we're back to DOS.

Hi. I'm a Thing fan.

If it helps any, I know two things...

First, I heard about this a while ago, like a month or two, and saw a trailer. As a Thing fan, I'm not only intrigued by this, but I say it looks pretty damn good. And furthermore, KNOWING that this is the situation of the Norwegian camp featured in the original movie has the effect of making me want to see it more. The effect of knowing where it's going can be a double-edged sword. It COULD do you wrong, but it could also do you RIGHT.

And the second thing is that I know for a fact that Mr. Carpenter not only gave his nod in approval here, but that he'd likely be consulted for things...making it a legitimate Thing. New Guy knows to trust the master.

...I will watch it, if I liked it then good.
If I hate it then I will still love the original and I will forget this prequel within a week...

No harm done. You guys worry too much.

Mmm, I'm willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt. Original Thing is a classic and my all time favorite horror movie (though god only knows why), and after reading up on this it sounds like the director is trying to be faithful to the spirit of the original.

For one, at his request the CGI's been kept to a minimum, a lot of this is still going to be the monster suit bits from the original, that alone's enough to keep me hoping.

Or maybe I just really don't want this one to be bad...
