Well, me too but only because the woman I was with at the time has terrible taste in film.

Admittedly the above is no excuse, I have paid well over $200 for those films including concessions.

So, people are really hating on PotC here. :(

Think we can all agree that PotC 1 is pretty good, but IMO, PotC 2 is pretty underrated. PotC 3 is average. PotC 4 is when we start getting into drek.

That isn't too bad a run.

Well if they?re still dead set on making a pirate movie, is Treasure Island an option?
Why the heck would we need another Treasure Island movie?

Last film? 2006. Last TV? 2012. That's not including stuff like Black Sails (2014), Hawkins & Silver (TBA), or how Treasure Island is to pirates what LotR is to fantasy - arguably even more so. Lord of the Rings has only been adapted to film twice (arguably three times...sort of), whereas Treasure Island's been adapted twenty times in film alone.

Point is, if you're going to do pirates, I'd like to think that one would have a bit more creativity than simply adapting Treasure Island. And yes, I'm saying this as someone who's got their own adaptation of Treasure Island on their 'to draft' list, but least I'm not sinking millions of dollars into that and charging people for it - Treasure Island is so ubiquitous that adapting it is pretty low hanging fruit.

And I say that as someone who LIKES Treasure Island and the various adaptations I've seen of it.

I am not hating on PotC, I actually love the stories and have many of the toys. I Just really can't stand Depp and see that he takes away from the story rather than enhances it. Depp is is like even more obnoxious than Bieber.

I saw this coming eventually. It was only a matter of time.
I'm amazed anyone's watched any since Keira and Orlando had the wisdom to bow out. Law of diminishing returns and all that.

Let tired franchises die - can resurrect them 20 years later if anyone really wants.

I think Pirates 3 was a great movie in hindsight.

Really only Pirates 4 On Stranger's Tides was the most crappy one.

It aged far better then say Shrek the Third or Spiderman 3.
Not a fair comparison; Shrek has ?aged? just fine and Spider-Man 3 was? [loading hyperbolic canon? target acquired? firing] ?utterly reprehensible from day one, completely irredeemable; quite possibly the most offensive and disgraceful piece of medium ever created by man since ever. It made my life objectively worse. If Spider-Man 1 and 2 are a Rhodes Scholar and Nobel Prize winner, Spider-Man 3 is their unibrowed crackwhore stepsister turning tricks at a truckstop at 3am.

Mostly agreed; the Pirates films are all a fun time, imho; I don?t bother trying to qualify them. What I like most about them is that they offer a little bit of everything: comedy, action, suspense, drama, spectacle, etc. Are they the best of those things? Not at all, but there?s something for everyone who can be arsed to set aside critical thinking for a couple hours and just be entertained. They remind me of the free-spiritedness of a lot of movies from my childhood that were just like ?fuck making sense and reasons; have fun:? Short Circuit, The Goonies, The Princess Bride, et al.

Well to be fair after seeing a trailer as hype as this I definately understand why:

When it comes to superhero movies (well, MOST movies actually,) I?m about as easy to please as they come. Mostly, my reactions range from ?meh, ok, I saw it? to ?wow, ok, I enjoyed it;? I?m not easily offended by innocuous attempts to entertain me for a couple of hours. But Spider-Man 3?. Spider-Man and Venom were my favorite superheroes growing up, and the first two Raimi movies absolutely nailed my expectations, but SM3 took both characters and made them fucking jokes. Tobey McGuire?s ?evil? Peter Parker was laughably cringy, physically painful to watch, and the portrayal of Venom was so utterly not worthy of the character from the comic books, it made me wish they hadn?t even bothered. I wonder if they bothered more than a cursory glance at any source material; Venom is not just ?evil Spider-Man? and he CERTAINLY doesn?t look like ?black Spider-Man with a snake mouth.? For Christ?s fucking sake, how do you NOT nail Venom?s signature characteristic?!? Its blows my mind to this day that they did it so poorly. I?d say SM3 was ?phoned in,? but that?d be an insult to both phones and prepositions.

*Takes another deep breath*

I should probably watch SM3 again because those issues were so bad, I literally have no recollection of the rest of the film, and that?s not my being hyperbolic; I forgot Sandman was even in it until I watched that trailer; I?ve apparently blocked it out like a traumatic memory. It?s likely not as bad as I recall; I know Hawki mentioned liking it in another thread, and as much as that hurt my feelings, I?m not an unreasonable man. Besides, a proper Venom now exists in the cinematic universe, so I can man-crush on him while I watch the pathetic train wreck that is Topher?s Venom.

To be fair I have not re-watched most Superhero movies I have seen in a long time.

Biggest one is the first 2 Bryan Singer X-Men movies, and I nearly forgot their plots in thier entirety.

I also haven't seen any of the older MCU movies in a while.

He has old hands and wears too many rings, which just makes the skin crinkle up more. As was noted above, he was good before he got confused between being weird and acting.

Kinda wish he'd be dropped from future movies, period. I can't remember the last time he didn't drag down a movie.

Probably the first Pirates.
I cannot stand Johnny Depp. I actually avoid movies all together if he is in them, movies I would have loved to see otherwise, and was a huge fan of the stories, I just cannot stand the guy. I really dislike his acting style and find him obnoxious and pretty gross overall. When I think about it, he very well may be my least favorite actor. I didn't even realize I had a least favorite actor until I think about Depp. So yea I hope they Drop him from everything. That would be great so there will be more movies I can look forward to that he would not ruin.

I have all these pirates of the Caribbean mega Bloks and Lego ships but would have liked it more if they had found just about anyone else to play Jack Sparrow other than Depp. I am not impressed with him, like at all, repulsed would be a more fitting description.
Johnny Depp, the least favourite actor you didn't know you had. That is incredible, and yet...totally credible.

now you've got me wondering if there's a movie I actually enjoyed him in. There's an urge to say Edward Scissorhands, but I don't know if I'd even enjoy the movie by now. nostalgia goggles are a powerful thing.

I've always found the singling out of Emo Parker to be weird. Not becsuse I think it ws good, but because I think it's pretty consistent with the tone of the Raimi movies. Raimi did bizarre, shlocky camp and this was pretty much more of the same. JJJ is camp. Aunt May is camp. The first Spidey-Goblin fight is camp. They're goofy, dorky, dumb moments and it's weird to me that a guy known for just that gets crap for one segment above all others.

I grew up in that era of Venom, but by 3 I had trouble even caring. With the exception of secondary characters, I didn't recognise this as Spider-Man to begin with.

I don't hate pirates. I hate the focus on Captain Jack Harkness...I mean, Sparrow. I haven't watched beyond 3, though, because I just wasn't in love with the Johnny Depp Show. CotBP was fun, the next two dragged but had some fun moments,. I didn't hate the series, but neither did I feel compelled to keep watching.
