I was in 5 years, I suggest Submarines or the sea-bees. Trust me on this... Surface navy paints the boat never ending wasting resources human and otherwise. Carriers are right out don't be on one.

It's basiclly like a long stay in a homophobic gym class, everyone being more jock than the other trying to prove manliness.

Ok bootcamp, chimp job, do what your told all the time. Easy day.

Your career path is simple, go to your a school, do well.

Underage drink or sleep with a underage girl, your out dishonorably.(from last i was in 2007)

Other than that is is very hard to get kicked out. Easy money, long days but it really is nice to have job security.

Surface navy really is crap. Everyone I knew hated it.
Subs, more family like, you do your job, get better advancement...easy day.

SeaBees, get guns, build anything and everything, operate on a Marine fire team build of their squads/platoons. Funny people great to be around and good advancement.

Get the job you want, and for god sake don't be a MA (Master At arms) unless your ready to go to a war zone asap. Nuke trained is a pain, good advancement but 16 hours days while everyone else has 8 hour days.


Good luck, keep your medical records on you. I left fully screwed up and with cancer...they just stuck their noses up and said I didn't want to work. But eh I retired at 32.

Just keep in mind, any injury you get, medical, document it. Cause they will let you break till you can't work anymore, and if you never complained they will leave you with nothing to claim from the VA. They shoot the bullet they discard the shell.

Other than that... it is a life changer.

While my degree is in History, and people keep telling me about the cool tech careers and information stuff, i am not sure i am interested in that stuff.

I am kinda looking at Law Enforcement and Security. I've been a security guard before (it sucked, but i was guarding a milk factory) and i kinda like that kind of work. I think it would be cool to go into that and then come out and be a Private Detective. Nothing is solid, but that is where my mind is right now.

The Navy pays the most, has the widest variety of jobs for the widest variety of skill sets. They have the best college payment programs and the best online/off base college programs.

I looked at and am going to go through NROTC then go Marines. They have the least of all of those benefits and all they promised me was a life changing and painful experience that would make me a tougher person. Hell, if I wanted benefits I'd be a merc.

Why not just look at NROTC?

not that i'm saying that i would refuse to go to a warzone or anything like that, i mean, its the freaking military war is kinda what they do. But is the Navy actually on the ground anywhere right now?

They yanked 8 people off my sub for Anti-terrorism training, room clearing and check point training. In other words, yes they needed us on the ground.

I was taught the really neat stuff, the rainbow six group up, breaching, entering clearing, but what they wanted you the most was check points.

Weapon searches, vehicle searches, yeah Iraq style IEDs how to handle violent foreigners, deadly force escalation, the works.

Why? Point blank was told, Sailors can do these jobs like we guard our own base. Marines are needed for combat ops, not guarding a gate. They took all our master at arms then took 4 basicly volen-told sailors for the send off.

Supply, temp duty surface, sub, air trained all had boots down.
Seabees building buildings...seals of course.

Seriosuly, though, you probably want to speify which Navy you are joining, and as what.

You mean gays, cowboys, motorcyclists,construction workers, native americans and black people arent in the Navy.

Yea the Air Force is pretty sweet. I rather enjoy the massive amounts of drone strikes that are pissing the Tali off pretty bad. That means were making progress. Also, I love how they call us cowards for using them while they make remote detonated bombs and hide in caves.
I fully support the reinstatement of napalm.

I'm not trying to tell anyone that the navy is a bad idea, only that its not fool proof. I'm just pointing out worst case scenarios.

I almost joined the Navy, but the recruiter wouldn't do anything unless I said I would go submarine. Thousands of feet under water strapped to two nuclear reactors and multiple nuclear warheads?

Hey my boomer took me round two years to get thyroid cancer. Course my doc was busted for gafting radiation logs on my TLD. And warheads don't give off that much just stay outa upper level and no sleeping next to the warheads...

Oh and it's only hundreds of feet, not thousands. Unclassified of course

Don't take my word for it, but an average career in the navy will amount to sailing the seas (of which there are apparently seven) and set your mind to a state of ease all whilst joined amongst your fellow men.

In all seriousness an old friend of mine had a father who'd served in The Australian Navy, the training's gruelling but it's a sophisticated career with a fair amount of attached prestige, go for it!

I am some people have told me that if i play my cards right i will never have to worry about going out to sea. But i have no issue with going to sea, in fact, if i am in the Navy i would feel a little silly not being on a ship at least a time or two.

hopefully as soon as i get on a boat, i can rally the crew against our task master, inspire a mutiny, and then afterwords be elected captain. At which point i plan to raise the jolly roger and set to looting and plundering with my buccaneer crew.

Monday i am going to go join the Navy. They gave me a really good offer a couple of years ago, and i have been kicking myself for walking away from it ever since. So, since i am not getting any younger i figured i might as well join now.

anyone else in willing to tell me a bit what its like? personal xp? anything like that?

I was in the Coast Guard, if that helps. There is a lot of doing nothing (what really feels like doing nothing, but is called "Standing Watch") followed by more doing nothing, and at some point a little action if you have a drill. Maybe you should ask us some questions and we will tell you what it was like for us...

Yeah only the Nuke program and SEALs get $15k signup bonuses and other benefits.
I signed up a couple months ago...I leave in August as an AZ. Could have done Nuke...but learned I was colorblind at MEPs and that narrows down your opportunities quite a bit.

I'm not too up-to-date with the Navy nowadays. They made me a good offer a few years ago but I wasn't interested enough then. Still am not now. Though if I ever went military, it would be Navy Seals or Air Force PJs. American military at least.

I had a friend who was discharged recently for medical reasons, bad eyesight among the leading reasons I think. From all else I hear though, and having a family history of Coast Guard/Navy service, I'd say it isn't too bad. I don't hear many bad stories about it. Not much I can say personally though.
