For those of you who didn't catch this, yesterday the Daily Star (a British tabloid) posted <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102247-Daily-Star-Gets-Nailed-for-Made-Up-GTA-Story>a story claiming Rockstar were working on 'GTA Rothbury' a new title in their popular GTA series based on the recent killings in Rothbury, UK by fugitive Raoul Moat.

After outrage at this clear fallacy the Star pulled the story, though it still remains on the frton page of their website under their 'most popular' stories. Today, 'journalist' Jerry Lawton, who fabricated the story, responded.

Jerry Lawton says he's "baffled" by the reaction to his story from men who "sit around all day playing games"

The Daily Star journalist who penned yesterday's story claiming that a Grand Theft Auto game based around the recent Rothbury shootings is in the works has stated that he's surprised by the reaction to the piece.

Furthermore, speaking on his Facebook page Lawton chose to make a further dig at gamers.

"Baffled by the fury of adult gamers," he wrote, as reported by Destructoid. "These are grown (?!?) men who sit around all day playing computer games with one another who've today chosen to enter the real world just long enough to complain about my story slamming a Raoul Moat version of Grand Theft Auto!

"You would think I'd denied the Holocaust!!! Think I'll challenge them to a virtual reality duel....stab....I win!!!"

Lawton's comments are unlikely to win favour with an industry already irritated by his ignorance of the medium.

MCV is yet to receive an official from the Daily Star, who removed the story shortly after we contacted them. A copy of the piece can be found here.

I saw this story on Destructoid. The Daily Star is pretty much a joke of a newspaper anyway for a news story like that you would have thought the journalist would have checked his facts before talking to the relative of the victim.

Complete tool, attempts to make funny references and jokes to an aspect and a population he has absolutely no idea about.

"A virtual reality duel" is just rofl, a blatant sign he has no idea what on earth he is on about. Coupled with the stereotype that all gamers sit at home and do nothing is just narrow minded and pathetic. An old generation prat who has failed to advance or intergrate with modern society and it's developments.

That man is genuinely disgusting. He thinks he can slander hard working people because they're "sad" and "have no life", and when they strike back he has the nerve to say they are in the wrong. This is just downright offensive. Slamming gamers is one thing I've come to expect, but using a psychpathic evil vindictive murderer as a tool to slander us is just immoral. Not to mention how offensive this is to the victims of that lunatic.

He should be fired. I mean a journalist that lies does not deserve to be called "journalist" in the first place.

Yes, react to your biased story being found out to be a complete fabrication by attacking those who called you out on it, and (an extremely stereotypical image of) gamers in general. That's how professional journalists act.

The fact that he wasn't able to figure out that any real life multimillion dollar company probably wouldn't put out a game based on an actual event (and with such amateurish box art), and certainly not announce it within days of it happening doesn't speak well for him either. Not having your sources straight is bad enough, but when you can't tell obvious bogus from what genuinely could be stories, then how do you have a job?

Ignorant douche is ignorant

Anyway, screw him. At the end of the day, he'll just end up as a lonely old cock-end, having been forgotten by the gaming and journalist world

What do people expect? It's the daily star for christ's sake. I, for one, was surprised to find out that it isn't trained chimps who write these stories.

Its like me saying on the news "JESUS CHRIST HAD X-RAY VISSION AND WAS ABLE TO TURN INTO FIRE!!!"

I would understand that a bunch of religious people would be offended because i am using one of their most beloved beliefs to create conmotion in a piece of S#$#h news, and then "WHAT!? are they OFFENDED!?!? those extremist inquisitors!!!"

one thing is to not understand a medium or to create confusion "making up" storyes, but another one is to offend halve the public just because you got called out for it

Bu....buh.....How can he have so much stupid?

Even if we do just sit around playing games all day (cough), that doesn't change the fact that he made the whole thing up.

*sigh....stupid, stupid.
