Heh, that last battle in kiongdom hearts went for way to long, but i didnt find it too hard, i just loaded myself with potions and finnished it on like my 3rd try, better than most final bosses.

On Topic.

I like RPG's and JRPG's, i fing that they normally last longer than your average game and you get more entertainment for you dollar.

My biggest beef with turn-based JRPG's is the fact that there is really no "skill" involved. When a boss kills you, it isn't because YOU didn't have the skill to beat him. It was because the game decided it was time for you to eat a shit sandwich and the computer generated number crunch going on makes your characters as effective as a sockful of dead squirrels.

I started playing Lost Odyssey and was really enjoying it until a freakin boss auto-paralyzed my whole damn party. I sat for about 2 hours going through the same futile motions because I refused to believe that I couldn't beat the bastard. Well, I was wrong, I wasted 2 hours of my life and Lost Odyssey has collected dust on my shelf ever since.

OK I'm kind of in the same boat as you in that I don't really like JRPGs. I've got into one or two of them but never very far. Most I've played is FFVII for about 20 hours on my PSP (CFW) but still not past the first disc and it has taken me about 2 years to get that far.

In terms of JRPGs that non-JRPGs lovers may like... I would have said Rogue Galaxy but you don't like that... I thought I did and then lost interest. Star Ocean for the PSP is an option. It has an active battle system, not turn-based. And I like the fact that the story is kind of different to normal JRPG fare... but again I never got very far in it. Chrono Trigger (SNES/DS) is another one you may like.

Actually I downloaded (it's not out for ages here and I'm gonna buy it when it comes out... if anyone has a problem with this, think of it as a demo) the asian release of Crimsongem Saga on PSP. The english translation isn't great but it's not voice acted and I find the gameplay to be very very good.

You see all enemies on the screen (I HATE random battles) and if you touch them without them having seen you (A red exclamation mark pops up when they see you) then you get a strong automatic first attack on all your opponents and then you get to choose your next attack. If the red exclamation mark disappears and they run at you then they get the first "surprise" attack. I love that system and it kind of puts some very simple stealth into the game in that you'll wait around the corner for a few seconds until the enemy is facing the other way and then run at them from behind.

Also who attacks next is shown at the top, it's not timed like some JRPGs are eg. FFVII. This allows for time to strategically pick your attack. Although honestly I haven't been in a battle yet where much strategy was required.

I also really like the design of the battle system. Here's a pic:

The story seems simple enough but the characters are likable and you can save ANYWHERE! Well except during a battle... I think.

It's a quality title and looks fantastic so from one non-JRPG lover to another, I highly recommend it. It's probably the most non-JRPG-player-friendly JRPG I've played. Hmmm... I hope you have a PSP and you might have to wait a while for it to come out here. It's out this year as far as I know.

Like those above me I'd go with a Tales game. Either Symphonia or Vesperia, fun action orinted combat with no random battles. The story's are nothing mind-blowing but the charcters are well fleshed out and likable.

Well, this forum doesn't take too kindly to JRPGs, but when people admit they do like a JRPG of somesort, it's either one of these:

Fire Emblem (not sure which specific game, they're just like "Fire Emblemadjhs!"
Valkyria Chronicles
Chrono Trigger
FFVII
Lost Odyssey
Pokemon
Tales of Symphonia
Earthbound
Golden Sun

What's next, Cigars for people who hate cigars?

What's the point in making "x" for people who hate "x" ?

You either like the genre or you don't. If you like even one game out of the genre, you can't say that you hate the genre anymore.
Gateway drug theory, I suppose. Like how Metroid Prime was suppose to get me into FPS, or something. Instead, I just wished there was a whole game centered around morph ball because first person pissed me off a lot at time. (and morph ball is the coolest shit ever)
Also, I noticed that people who usually despise them will admit to having that one guilty pleasure game that they really enjoyed. (oh, the pain!)

You need to play Chrono Trigger. You fight, I believe, the second to last major boss and the last boss halfway through the game, and that boss is beatable. It's simply not something you can realistically accomplish the first time through. I love games with multiple endings littered throughout the whole of the game.

I also love rpgs with challenge. If you died in a good rpg, it was because you weren't strategic enough. In some games of the past, you were required to grind, but not all. The best jrpgs don't make grinding mandatory, just thought.

Been there, done it, beat it, loved it.

And Chrono Cross.

Well, the three Paper Mario games are quite different from most Japanese RPG´s (or RPG's in general) and incredibly fun, even for people who normally don't like RPG's. Also, pearls like Chrono Trigger are so good they will probably make you like the genre.

Basically, JRPGs are long, semi-interactive movies with just barely enough gameplay to make you feel like you've invested a good deal of time into the characters. If you need game play and immersion, your not going to like JRPGs. They also are all heavily stylized, so if you are a fan of gritty realism, your going to not like JRPGs. If JRPGs were to break out of there usual mold, and break any of these rules, I think they could get something special. Good, in depth story's is a rarity, and it is the one crowning achievement of JRPGs.

The only advice I can give to anti-JRPG people is to play Chrono Trigger.

Buy it for DS, or use an emulator, whatever. But do it. That game is amazing.

Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Starforce, fantastic games and are the only possible-JRPGs that I like.
