Yea I agree about the catch-22. WRPGs stories aren't as in depth, they have to sacrifice some story and characterization to make the game more open ended. Since you are in control of the story there is just way too many outcomes to flesh them all out in the same depth as a JRPG.Abandon4093 said:Is it weird that I absolutely love Yoshitaka Amano's art. But I can't stand the Final Fantasy series. Characters and aesthetic and all?
Still, after all these years, I can't quite figure that one out.
JRPG's rarely if ever interest me. I think their style lends itself better to a very linear and pre composed character setup. Which they often end up having.
And that kinda takes away the flagship thing I want from an RPG. Customisability. I want to inject my own style into the characters actions and their looks.
JRPG's tend to have thoroughly outlines their characterisation and have a very set story. I'm not going to plug 50+ hours into a story that I don't really have any control over.
WRPG's tend to be more open to player whims. But can suffer from weak story telling and characterisation.
It's a catch-22 really.
And it usually comes down to the fact that I hate JRPG gameplay mechanics with a burning passion. I do not like taking turns.
JRPGs are at times painfully linear but this allows the story to progress more smoothy and in depth. Since you don't create the characters it is easier to give them a set personality. Dragon Quest 9 comes to mind for me. Your party members are all generic people you create, so therefore they have absolutely no personality. A rarity in a JRPG.
